I guess it's no different than if I had gone and seen a band in my 20's and they had covered some crappy 80's pop band, but I was in high school when that song was popular and have no interest in seeing punk bands that I like playing shit like that.
Maybe you should re-read, I obviously don't think smashing pumpkins was an 80's pop band, they were a 90's pop band. I'm saying it's no different than if I had gone to a show in the 90's and a band had covered a song from the 80's, which happened all the time. I'm just saying, I was into punk in the early 90's and the people who listened to smashing pumpkins at the time were definitely not.
I'm 32. "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" came out in 1995 or something, and I was in love with that album. If I was a Menzingers show and they played this, I would have loved it. The Lawrence Arms cover though... no. Love TLA, but... no. THAT is the song I would never want to hear The Menzingers cover.
