I totally agree with what you were saying at the end, we need to have the vocalists at the centre, like Jessie, Tori, Jazmine, Yebba etc. Nobody is doing it like Jessie, she's incredible, and her stage presence is unbelievable, but somehow really underrated (she's underrated in general anyway 😭). I don't get how many people sleep on Jesse J. She just sang a great Chaka Khan song to death like many of the great voices there have been. You do not hear of Jessie J as a great British singer like Adele. 🇬🇧 Nor do you hear of Coco Lee +KZ Tandingan, who sang with Jessie J in The Singer 2018. Nor do you hear Morissette Amon 🇵🇭 in US + Canadian radio. Promotion by Jessie J must account for something! 🤔 Western music industries are slow in promoting music from Asia. I recall KPop in the 1980s. But this is mainatream starting in the late 2010s! 😖 In terms of underappreciated music, music industry needs to take a SIP. That is, they need to listen to music from South Korea, Indonesia + The Philippines. Hence SIP. 👨🎤👩🎤
Her first management pigeonholed her as pop. Which must have been incredibly frustrating when you are so good people call you "the white Whitney". She's never found her niche really, so the show was "see, this is what I can do".
The UK pigeonholed her as pop. So she left her management but then never really found her niche. She's v similar to amazing 80's soul singer Lisa Stansfield who was huge in the UK but never made it in the US. Lisa vocally, is extraordinarily similar to Jessie.
