"Gamblers at a roulette table looking to double their money traditionally face the choice of putting it all on black or red. And on Black / Red, their landmark 12th album, Feeder also go for a high-stakes double: 18 tracks, two “discs” and one raised middle finger to today’s supposedly TikTok-ravaged short attention spans.
Luckily, if there’s any band that could be described as a sure thing, it’s probably Feeder. There’s barely been a misstep across those dozen records and while this trilogy-concluding follow-up to 2022’s excellent Torpedo is certainly ambitious, Grant Nicholas and Taka Hirose emerge with their high-rolling reputations enhanced.
The ’Black’ disc continues Torpedo’s hard-rocking renaissance, the tightly wound classic rock riffing of Playing With Fire and the expansive, cinematic landscape of ELF striking a charming juxtaposition with the irresistible pop rush of Hey You. ‘Red’ isn’t quite as heavy, but it’s just as intense, stuffed with Feeder’s ’00s trademark: melody-drenched, emotive alternative-rock anthems such as Sleeping Dogs Lie, Unconditional and Here Comes The Hurricane.
Feeder are still more than capable of springing a surprise - lord alone knows what odds you’d have got on the poignant Soldiers Of Love sporting a bagpipes intro, 30 years after they first blasted out of South Wales. But as that song rails against a world 'When you feel nothing is real', you’ll realise that - whether you have time to hear these songs all together or listen to them in splendid isolation - Black / Red is an authentic representation of a great band in full, long-distance flight.
And, if you’re looking for a band to keep it real in a world of fakes, you could do a lot worse than to put it all on Feeder."

I saw them live supporting Stereophonics at Wembley arena. It was a present for my girlfriend. Feeder were way better! Really enjoyed them.

That line sums up exactly why I love this song, this album and this band. Whereas many other bands would've reacted to a tragedy with a sadness-filled album, this album has a theme of coming through grief and fighting through it, not being consumed by it. That, for me, is a fantastic message and one that shows the strength of this band, whilst still paying tribute to Jon's memory at the same time. A brilliant album from a brilliant group.
I remember this when it came out. I was 12. My brother was heavily into Feeder and somehow got me into Echo Park the album. The drummer dying really shocked me.
I remember when this came out and with the drummers in the video as a tribute but I didn't get why they didn't write the song about him.
I've just come back to this song after so many years and the lyrics hit me like a tonne of bricks. I understand it now. Maybe I'm wrong but I feel it's about going to the dark place but understanding that somehow you can come back from it. Maybe it's because I've been there myself over the years and coming back into the sunshine (as it feels to me) comes around eventually. And fuck. This hit me.
It's the " I miss you around" lyric that gets me.

"X" amount of people claim that FEEDER are the most underrated band in the world. "X" amount of people get a "like" from me.
I became an instant fan, the moment I first heard them perform "HIGH" on a chatshow back in the 90s. A workmate of mine did security once for a FEEDER signing and said they were genuinely decent and charming chaps. They even apologized when they overran, and their sensitivity shows here with no straight replacement for Jon in this video.
Hope they never call it a day!

a very poignant record as it will be synonymous with the the loss of their former drumer who died in tragic circumstances but no less a powerfuil song which is a fitting tribute to his memory.

If you are a feeder, you should definitely seek help for yourself and your obese partner. Seeing your significant other covered in fat folds may be a turn on, but you are sending her to an early death.
