  • In this video I explain and demonstrate a creative approach to using George Hamilton Green's Instructional Course for the Xylophone and Nicolas Slonimsky's Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns to spice up your technical routine.

Excellent lesson. I'm a guitarist so it's fascinating to see Slonimsky patterns played on xylophone. When I practice from Slonimsky's Thesaurus, I always have a tendency to start everything on the original C note -- I need to branch out and start on different tones, so thanks for mentioning that tip. On my YT channel I have a number of guitar instrumentals that employ various Slonimsky patterns (tablature included) if anyone wants to check them out (they're rock and metal instrumentals, which have been known to irritate some people, so be forewarned).

I assume that someone somewhere has created midi files of the Slonimsky material. Any idea where I might find something like that? Thanks!

Thanks for watching! Hmmmm...that's tricky...I don't know of anything off-hand, but I acquired my copy of the Slonimsky in hard-copy...I can't remember where exactly.

Great stuff, you should fix the audio levels tho, the xylophone is TOO loud.

I've just started on this book and already at page 13 i feel how there is serious work ahead to truly integrate the thematic concepts into my playing. The book doesn't really give a guide to how so it was interesting to see your approach to the practicality of it.
Ideally i want to dévelope at method of transforming existing melodies and harmony into these thematic monstrosities.
    It'll take some work.

So glad that you're enjoying the book. It's such an inspiration! I'm sure you've found already the numbers before each of the scalar patterns - these correspond to harmonies in the back of the book. Perhaps that could give you a starting place? I'll bet you will have a great road ahead!
