I helped playtest this in college ages ago. I went to school close to GDW. (University of Illinois - Champaign/Urbana) I remember taking out a tank with an RPG. I didn't realize how rare that outcome was. Fun at the time.
When I realize the historical backstory of T2K is being told: uh oh. 15 minutes later: ohhh yeahhh that was the good stuff. I've been a fan of T2K since 1st edition GDW in the 80s. That setting, regardless of which alternative history/edition used, is just amazing for a group of players who like to travel, fight, explore, engage, and survive. Gritty and real, finding hope and purpose in a world of ruin and conflict. Thanks for the nostalgia.
@@scottperkins5038 I think I'll start with another skill Wich will be basicly how resistant you are to the effects of anomalys/dark ones similar to how artyom is. it would allso make for a good plot hook for the party.
That was neat! I love hearing about obscure games like this I vaguely remember from the BASH catalogue. Would love to see you tackle other dead games, like Dark Conspiracy or Traveler itself. As for the timing... well, they did predict a lot of things uncomfortably well, didn't they? But I think it's more impactful because we're in a place where we've seen this happen.
I remember playing the original as an 80's kid and the game always started with "you're in the middle of Poland" 😅 I'm not sure if I would like to pick this up at 2024 as it hits a little bit too close to home 😞
Traveller was published immediately after and influenced by Star Wars, look at the Psionics rules. I bought the first edition in 77 when it came out. ;-)
Cool video, I especially love the part at 13:20 where you talk about a violent debate and the girl sorta half heartedly slaps the table. :D I played Twilight 2,000 back in 86 when it was considered speculative fiction not alternative history. Which is kind of a weird thing to have happen . As far as a good time to release.. Well it was released before the whole thing in the Ukraine happened so it's not like they're trying to make a statement or anything. I also don't see why people would be uncomfortable due to current events. I mean if you're close to the fighting, but still have time to play a RPG I suppose it would strike close to home. But for those of us in the US or UK or something... That's a long ways away and hardly a big deal. I mean if someone is ok with playing a Vampire... then they should be able to separate reality from fiction for this.
This is such an interesting and insightful comment. Thank you so much man! I tried my best to make it a bit tongue-in-cheek while still interesting. It's a weird game. Thanks so much for watching : )
I honestly believe that GDW would have done better if they had pushed DARK CONSPIRACY as the newer game (over TW2K V2.2) and changed it to be a darker action-adventure game like PULP CoC based on something like the X-Files, instead of positioning it as a comic book based or 50s serial-movie-type format like the old Rocket Man or Flash Gordon. DARK CONSPIRACY could have been the inspiration for games that resembled movies like TROLL HUNTER, THE LAST WITCH HUNTER, and CONSTANTINE.
Interesting concept, but of course my brain won't shut up. The problem is with collapse of the Warsaw Pact most of the man power of the Soviet Union is gone. Russia's total population was 147 million in 1991. A time time scale compression could fix the issue as tactical nukes come out faster. Or China. But, then we are looking at Twilight 2020. I think a little more war gaming is in order and some history is needed.. What would a post Desert Storm with the Cold War still ongoing look like as the USSR is still around and angry? Germany would have one of the largest military in Europe post reunification. The United States, UK, and France would have a battle tested armies from Desert Storm. China suffers Tammian Square. All this could lead to the wanted scenario.
Manpower is one thing, feeding and equipping those men is something else entirely. Strategic industries would be devastated. Everything from resource harvesting and refining, industry, communications, transportation, logistics coordination, etc., etc., etc. And those who would still be able to produce would have little motivation to sacrifice their own physical and food security on behalf of governments that brought down the ruin and lack the resources to enforce their will.
Real talk. Is now a good time to release Twilight 2000? A bad time? Give me a comment, let me hear what you think about this RPG. Is it repellant to you?
Fictionalised RPG game set in the year 2000 has nothing to do with what’s happening in 2022, if anyone is offended or finds it repellant then they really need to toughen up and stop being a snowflake.
???? That's a very different thing. I'm talking about classic hex-and-chit wargames, board wargames. The sort of thing that long predates miniature wargames like Warhammer, Infinity, or Mantic's offerings. Advanced Squad Leader was on its way out. There's a reason that '"Strategy and tactics" magazine isn't in every board game store. The decline is in part due to the rise of video games and other hobbies, like the growing world of hobby board games, that served as competition. Miniature wargames are a very different entity.
Bro, I know you're an American and it's not your strong suit, but you have mispronounced horribly EVERY SINGLE non-english word. Doesn't take much effort to check their pronounciation...

That's the best Twilight 2000 lore vid I have seen and I've seen a few
Thanks kindly. I think it’s useful for GMs who want to explain it to players
I like the way it was put together

I love this video! Like real-life table top lore
Thanks man. I know this one won’t be as popular. So I really appreciate your comment.
@@WarLore This is an awesome piece of work, man. Absolutely fantastic job.
Been tempted to run this as a Metro inspired game especially as running it vanilla feels a bit grim right now.
that would be a blast!
imma do that
Just a question of how to add the weird monsters and anomalies.
@@scottperkins5038 I think I'll start with another skill Wich will be basicly how resistant you are to the effects of anomalys/dark ones similar to how artyom is. it would allso make for a good plot hook for the party.
Try looking into Dark Conspiracy for further inspiration

The seed of this video absolutely dares to seeing piles of old T2K books stuffed in old metal cabinets. You’re totally spot on.
I remember playing the original as an 80's kid and the game always started with "you're in the middle of Poland" 😅

It’s a very cool game. Really cool setting, but uh… feels a bit too realistic in some ways!
this was super entertaining, thanks! i have a bunch of the old stuff from T2K, Traveller, and MegaTraveller, loved those games.
They were extremely im influential and it’s no surprise
I’d love to hear more about the oddities of the last edition
Love the alternate history lesson. Also, for all the info that I had no idea of. Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
"we didn't start the fire" by billy joel plays in my head starting at 9:45
Played so much T2000 in 6/7th grade. Great memories
It seems like the ideal game for someone aged like, 12-16 who is into military scifi fun
TW2000 was my other brother's favorite.
Great video! Helps me (and hopefully my players) get familiar with the game setting. Well done!
Traveller was published immediately after and influenced by Star Wars, look at the Psionics rules. I bought the first edition in 77 when it came out. ;-)
Excellent review, and even better lore video. Well done!
Thanks a bunch! I really like T2K.

*both sides panic as the unthinkable happens*
surprised pikachu face for nuclear war
i honestly thought we were exploring the 80s version.
Maybe I’ll do one on that someday
Please explore the Twilight 2000 setting!
Hmm, only problem is that I still don't have the Stockholm book!
And here we are in 2023 playing out this game in real time…
Sad but it really feelsl ike it.

I would love some more Dark Conspiracy, they had a really wide portfolio. Maybe too wide.
Sure, explore that setting. I'd watch it.
This is a great watch - makes me want to play Twilight!
I'd like you to explore the original setting.
I love the lord and world building of this game
No mention of T2K, 2nd Edition?
Explore the original setting
Please explore the setting
Guess I’ll have to

hey, I didn't write it! :P
but that is an interesting alternative, and I think that would be a good book to have released in the 90s or early 2000s

So where was the review? Video went through the history all the way up to 2000 and then ended. Never got to the game at all.
Real talk. Is now a good time to release Twilight 2000? A bad time? Give me a comment, let me hear what you think about this RPG.

That's a dumb question since Twilight 2000 was released last year.
Yeah it's been out for a while. It's not free leagues fault

Yup. Shouldn't have watched this before bed.
Thks & request an update.

cool
You keep saying in this video that war-games had become commercially unviable in the late 80s/early 90s. I guess Warhammer 40,000 passed you by......

Bloody hell, watching this with the war in Ukraine is a scary thing....Can your next video be something nice like My Little Pony
February 2000: Queens Celestia and Luna declare war on the Teletubbies. The use of tactical cutie marks is authorized.

I didn't do a very good job. This is something I have endeavored to fix with other videos.
