  • Giant Fathom 29 2 first look and VS Giant Fathom 1
After a ton of requests to at least show the Giant Fathom 29 2 2021 I decided to do a comparison video with the Fathom 1 and to see if the price difference is actually worth the money.
The fathom from Giant is definitely the most popular hardtail mountain bike in my area. I think no matter which model you go with you will be satisfied with the ride quality of this machine.
Be sure to like and subscribe! I will also try to throw the other colorways of these different bikes up on the ole Instagram.

Your observation regarding the SX RD not going down from 50 tooth is pretty much spot - on. Have a full SX group just replaced the RD and Shifter to GX and has been running smoothly ever since. The cranks in particular is a steal to essentially how bomb proof they are. And nice videos by the way!

I think whenever you get the chance to do a comparison is always useful, as it makes people aware that sometimes the more expensive model isn’t always the best value. Suppose it depends when you can get the bikes in to compare at the minute.

Thank you, great comparison. I have the '21 fathom 2 - 27.5 and it is a fantastic bike. Giant has had an issue with installing a non-boost chainring on this model so far isolated only to the black/rosewood (something to look for while unboxing or before purchasing). Many have had this issue evidenced by reviews on Giant's website. My 1st ride was miserable; chain drop about 20 times. Giant quickly responded and sent the correct chainring (30t boost) , but while waiting my lbs installed a boost 32t and I am keeping this one.

I appreciate the compliment! I would honestly narrow it down to what is important to you between the two bikes. The XTC is an awesome, lightweight, entry race bike but it is strictly designed for fast cross country trails. Not saying you can't ride something more challenging on it but that is not it's intended purpose. The Fathom has a much more "trail friendly" geometry and beefier frame. Most people I know end up going with the Fathom at that price point

I have an opportunity to purchase a Fathom but it's 100 miles away. If there was a warranty issue, what would the process be? Do I have to go back to shop it was purchased at? Can I work with Giant direct? Would local Giant dealer take care of? I would like to purchase it local but who knows when supply will come back. Love the channel, thanks for the help.

So far Giant has still done a great job with warranty through the pandemic within reason. Luckily we haven't had many warranties and you would still wait a bit but they do get it taken care of. As far as who you take it to, as long as you have the original bill of sale you can take the bike to any Giant dealer and they can take care of it for you. The shop I'm at is in NC and we have had people drive from Florida because we had a bike in stock they were looking for! Thanks for supporting the channel!!

It's not a full review but, the Crest fork feels kinda good on the trail. Smooth riding, sometimes it nosedived a little deep on drops but I only had one spacer in at the time to be honest. Replaced it for a RS 35 though. The 35 is heavier but the Crest has an annoying top out "click" I couldn't get past, seemed worse in cold weather. Also there is no servicing it yourself without voiding warranty. If you don't care much about a noisy fork though, it is an ok fork, probably a little nicer than a recon, but not yet a reba in my opinion.

The Praxis Cadet is a pretty nice crank. The problem with it is that Praxis uses the Sram direct mount style for the chain ring. So, if you want to change chain rings you’ll find that there are hardly any options with the Sram DM style ring that is compatible with the Shimano HG+ chain. I had this issue and ended up going with the Wolf Tooth Camo which allows you to use a Sram DM style spider and a HG+ chain specific ring that mounts to it.
