In this video, Berklee Online instructor Loudon Stearns demonstrates how to create a talk box. He explains how a talk box uses a tube and your mouth to create a filter for your instrument, and that the effect works best with a distorted guitar or bass. Using a small amp, a microphone, and some supplies from Home Depot, he creates the effect and demonstrates how it would be used in a performance setting. This video is from the Berklee Online course Sylvia Massy: Creative Approaches to Recording and Producing Music.

That’s how a talk box works. It’s just a driver in a box.

I tried this but the amp is still louder than the sound coming out of the tube even into a mic.

The Essential Guitarist, that’s why you should use a compression driver and not a cone loudspeaker. A compression driver is made to be connected to a horn so sound only emanates from the throat of the driver. The throat is where the tube is connected on real talk boxes. Use an EQ or filter to cut frequencies below about 300 Hz. Compression drivers are made to only handle midrange and up. Lower frequencies can damage the driver. You can find compression drivers at places like Sweetwater, etc.
