When they landed in Corunna, Joanna and Philip were welcomed by the people with great joy and rejoicing and it seemed the young monarchs would be very popular in Castile. After that, leaving Joanna, pregnant again, in a nearby village, Sanabria, Philip met Ferdinand in Remesal to agree on the future of Castile.
Their discussions led to the Treaty if Villafáfila, signed by both on 27-28 June 1506. Despite what we see in the movie, both of them recognized Joanna's incapacity in their treaty. The Treaty of Villafáfila followed the Treaty of Salamanca (24 November 1505), in which Ferdinand and Philip were recognised as co-regents in Joanna's name. However, the new treaty required Ferdinand to cede all power to Philip and retire to Aragon, in return of large incomes, as mentioned in the movie clip too. But the day after he signed the treaty, seemingly without being forced and willingly, Ferdinand did a strange thing: he drew up secret documents repudiating all the agreements on the grounds of coercion, claiming that he would never otherwise have signed treaties that did such enormous damage to Joanna and himself. By doing this, he probably wanted to leave his options open: if in the future Joanna's incapability would suit him, he would not question the validity of the treaty, but if he would find himself in a situation in which it would suit his interests better to say he wanted to go against Philip and defend Joanna, he could claim he tried and he was just forced to sign that treaty.

Ferdinand was just so cold irl. Depriving her daughter of her right but having thought of a loophole if the winds turned. He was unforgivable, it was his duty to protect his daughter. But he didn't even spare some money for his daughters (see Catherine) let alone power and titles.
I would like to point out something though the Lords seem ungrateful to him because he was a great king in Castile for 30 years, as good as Isabel, leading armies in victories in Granada etc. Perhaps he didn't want to give up a kingdom he had been working on for a lifetime and helped make a superpower.

@@annlrsraxlrs2010 Yes, the lords of Castile really seem very ungrateful to him. But that was not poor Joanna's fault 😞
It was just every consort's fate: when your ruler spouse dies, you lose the throne you had next to him/her, and you lose your power and authority along with it. Women were used to this, men not so much, because there weren't many female rulers in the first place, so there weren't many male consorts.

Actualy it makes real sence of Ferdinand doing what he did now with that explanation he might seemed cold but I think he already knew very well situation and loved his daughter and in that way he made it so that he could protect Johanna in both situation as if you gone thru how the situation would have been for Johanna if Ferdinand had not done this I think would been way worse clme to think of it

Poor Juana, things would have been so different only if she had shown sanity and had not gone to Flanders, it's so sad I have always read about her that she was a very intelligent and learned woman, fate is so cruel sometimes, despite of who you are you cannot escape it's cruelty.

You know when Phillip came up on his horse all I could think about was pulling that cape and him off the horse 😂It was very difficult to see Ferdinand and Phillip at a table together , minus Isabel and Joanna ;and to decide who I was more aggravated with . Phillip one , I actually was proud of Ferdinand for at least supporting his daughter in this one endeavor. Even though I’m sure it was not for the good of her and was a secret motive for him . But I was also glad that he cared enough and recognized the power the eminence had .

That's why I'm so mad at Cisneros. Yes everyone recognizes he has so much power, can't he just use it a bit to help Joanna? I was so mad that he did nothing for her in the next scene.

@@annlrsraxlrs2010 His role in the forceful conversion of the Muslim population of Granada already tells me that Cisneros is an arrogant man who likes to play God, so if he decided to betray them because of more power, I am not surprised....unless he was taking advantage of Felipe's hubris in order to help Fernando of course.

I’m not sure how it went down in history, but it seems like in this video that Ferdinand does seem to care for Joanna, not wanting to sign the agreement and depart for Aragon until he sees her in person.

    • @Lily1127channel
      @Lily1127channel  4 роки тому +9

He did sign it and declare her incapable. Although I read in a biography of Ferdinand's that he did want to say her goodbye before leaving for Aragon, but Philip's supporters prevented it because they feared Ferdinand could turn Joanna against Philip if he told Joanna about this awful treaty, but in his own way which would probably put all the blame on Philip. I just have the feeling that it's so indecent that they met and negotiated without Joanna, and I doubt that it was not what both men wanted. I mean, if any of them insisted that Joanna should be there, surely it could have been carried out. If Philip or Ferdinand just says: Ok, I will meet you, but only on the condition that Joanna must be there. But I think it just suited both to exclude Joanna.

The fact that Fernando and Felipe eerily resemble each other physically only serves to cimentate and enhance their statuses as mirrors to one another.
See why I said that spiritually speaking, Felipe is Fernando's son in more ways than one?
-Felipe is a ruthless, cunning and power hungry politician who delights in psychologically tormenting his wife and likes to have affairs with the ladies of the court, yet he is also revered as a great monarch in his lands. This description can be also applied to Fernando as well. He is essentially Fernando Jr in more ways than one and as I said, that's part of the reason Fernando despises Felipe.

Exactly I totally agree isn't it ironic that Fernando's only legitimate son was nothing like him? I always thought Prince Juan in the show and in real life was more Isabel's son than his. He looked like her they were both blondes and they seemed to be much closer than Juan was to his father. Just my interpretation. I like to think that if Juan had lived he would have tried to help Juana out and perhaps could have gotten her out of her horrible marriage. Boo Philip!

You clearly have little knowledge of English history. So, before you embarrass yourself again, let me tell you, as an Englishman, William of Orange was a respected monarch here and in Northern Ireland. He and his wife brought the much needed stability the crown needed, and heralded the arrival of the Bank of England, amongst other great institutions and the expansion of the British Empire. Now please, stopping talking nonesense as that's all you ever seem to do.

Yeah. In that age when female power was so despised by men, if you were a girl and a bit of power landed on you, you had to be 100% determined and ready to go as far as necessary if you wanted to keep it (like Isabella), otherwise you could quickly end up in a miserable situation like Joanna and several women before her.
