Tarantino himself even said that Hans Landa is the greatest character he has ever written.
Man, he can't stop patting himself on the back
@@DiggitySlice that's a narcissist for ya.
@@DiggitySlice true, but that is also correct, lol
@@DiggitySlice
Ain’t braggin if it’s true lol
I think the reception Landa has gotten as a character overtime has only helped Tarantino realize that
Christoph Waltz is a AMAZING actor. And funny thing is he has won two Oscars, both for Tarantino films. One he plays a INCREDIBLE villian and racist, Colonel Hanz Landa in Inglorious Bastards, and the other he plays a extreme ANTI Racist in Django Unchained.
And is actually fluent in English, French, Italian (and of course German), which made him so...so real.
there’s always that one guy
The mans got more range than a wild chicken
He’s definitely got range as an actor 🎭
Pure greatness
The opening sequence in this is one of the greatest scenes ever filmed. The tension is so... Just great.
I wonder if there were menacing Nazis that conducted themselves like Hans Landa did. Either way they were evil shitheads that got what they deserved. The real shame is that this type of evil didn't start or end with them.
Terrifying as ever
Exactly. The opening almost works as a short film in its own right
I cannot pick between a favorite scene in this movie: The opening, Landa showing up again, or the pub scene. All of them are masterclass in tension.
@@timnordstrom7383 Christoph Waltz portrayal of Hans Landa was above and beyond one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema.
The fact that Landa was planning to defect makes killing Bridget an even scummier move.
He was still supportive of the Third Reich and a full Nazi through and through. He considered her a traitor.
He just found the perfect situation he could exploit for his own person gain.
Because the theater attack was all her plan. He couldn’t have her around taking credit.
@@daffodil852 It looks more personal than that. They obviously know each other, so maybe he was insulted that she didn't include him.
@@dudermcdudeface3674 It was and wasn't that it was personal. He is a Nazi but he's also a narcissist. He has committed many war crimes and would be tried if caught after the war. He did know Bridgette and was offended by her being a spy for the Allies. But he also knew that she had some sort of operation going and, with all the top Nazi's there, it would be easy to deduce what kind of plot it was. So, by taking out Bridgette he satisfied his Nazi need for revenge against a traitor AND placed himself in a situation where he could survive the war in comfort.
@@kharilane1340 The narcissism would be why he might react violently to feeling insulted by someone he considered under his control. There might even be some symmetry with how Frederick Zoller reacts to being rejected by Shoshanna.
"I made a deal with your General for that man's life!" is such an underrated line, and Waltz pulls it off so amazingly well!
I always thought that line said more than just the line. To me I took it as they killed his lover. Nazi’s first priority in the 30s was to persecute every homosexual in Germany and I feel that’s why he wanted to make the deal to go to America and he made the deal specifically to save “that man’s life” so they can live out their life. Anyway that’s my theory and I haven’t heard anyone say anything about it, I might just be overthinking it
@@Mokoflama Guess the Night of Long Knives wasn't long enough
One of the most masterfully performed villains in history of cinema
Christoph Waltz owns that character from the first scene to the last scene. I don't know of many actors that can play crazy as well as him.
I love the subtle play with language in this film: In the beginning Hans Landa says: "Au revoir" Shosanna (until we meet again). In contrast: When he left Monsieur LaPadite and gave the order to shoot the hidden people, he said "Adieu" (Farewell/Goodbye). He had no intention of seeing one of them again.
Second moment: German "three" vs. English "three". I saw this in theatres and instantly, I knew he had given away his cover. Genius moments. Subtle, but so powerful.
I took German in high school back in the '90s and the counting thing was so strange to me that as soon as I saw him throw up the fingers in that scene I knew how he screwed up
This movie is a MASTERPIECE. The whole cast is perfect.
Aldo said it himself
Well, with the possible exception of Mike Meyers...😐
@@blanketstarry7725
and Eli Roth.
Let's not argue over semantics. No film will ever be unanimously loved by everyone. Even if it was, someone without fail will always nitpick about it. Just appreciate whatever it is you like or love about it. Seriously life is way too short to waste on pointless bullshit.
"No, more like chewed out. I've been chewed out before." One of the greatest quotes ever
Yeah, love that...spoken by a man of expertise, experience and success so he knows how far he can push.
@@deadcatthinks6725 Also "chewed out" is absolutely spot-on correct period slang. The period dialogue Tarantino wrote is unbelievable. "Winnatou! King of the Apaches!". "The Bear Jew is a Golem", these are all appropriate cultural touchstones for the period.
The only line I like more is "Touch me again, Krautburger"
Right up there with “And cousin, business is a’ BOOMIN!” 😂
Speaking of chewed out, the way Hans chews his strudel at one point should be a crime on itself
Fun fact: Adam Sandler was originally supposed to play Donny/Bear Jew in Inglourious Basterds, but was too busy filming the movie Funny People at the time so he couldn’t do it.
Also, Tarantino almost pulled the plug on making the movie when he couldn’t find an actor to play Hans Landa who was fluent in German, French and Italian. Then he found Christoph Waltz to play Landa, and Waltz played the role so great that he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
Tarantino-verse legend has it:
Donnie's grandson shows up in "True Romance" as the somewhat scummy producer.
Aldo Raine, the best character: he never lost his style and objective. Hans Landa, the best antagonist: he always planned everything. I was hoping Shosshana could survive, but at least she completed her revenge.
He has my favorite line in the movie - "nah more like chewed out, I been chewed out bafore."
@@hettbeans …..ain’t we all though? 🤣
IKR. She shoulda shot him in the head and made sure he was dead instead of feeling any kind of sympathy for him after he tried to push up on her like that.
Out of all the deaths in Tarentino's movies, Shoshanna's hit me hardest.
@@SurvivorBri Same, alongside (ironically enough, with Waltz also playing him) Dr. Shultz in Django. Both so close to their ultimate goals, only to be killed so unceremoniously.
Top 3 Tarantino movie for me for me.
It's either Kill Bill vol 1, Inglorious Basterds, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill vol 2...
or Inglorious Basterds, Kill Bill as a whole, Pulp Fiction.
edited ot add: Christoph Waltz actually speaks FIVE languages in the movie: German, French, English, Italian... and Polish (he says the word "pusty" which means empty when he doesn't shoot Shoshanna).
There's a great detail in the opening scene most people overlook because of how small and subtle it is. That includes me of course, until I heard about it.
When Landa asks one of the daughters for a glass of milk, he holds her by the wrist. The reason he does this is so he can feel her pulse and know whether or not her heartbeat is fast. If it is, then it's more likely they ARE actually hiding something/someone.
She also was looking at the floor while they were still in the house, so he could have picked up on that & knew they were prob under the floorboards.
Also worth pointing out, when he says “au revoir” to Shoshanna, “au revoir” is what you when you expect to see someone again. “Adieux” is what you use when you don’t expect to see them again. He says adieux to Monsieur Lapadite, but au revoir to Shoshanna.
I’m not so sure about that bc weren’t the Germans occupying France at the time? She would be nervous regardless bc the Germans were known to do whatever they wanted and all the sisters were good looking.
@@Islanders83 yeah, but the point is not wether or not it's proof enough. Maybe it's not incriminating proof on it's own, but it's one of many little things that start to add up. Every interrogation is full of tactics to get at least little snippets of information you can use, things that on their own can be attributed to different things, but together they start to form a bigger picture.

Loooooved how much you guys enjoyed the film. Hans Landa is one of the best villains in the post-2000 era. That first scene? When you see the switch in his eyes before he says, "You're sheltering enemies of the state, are you not?" Christoph Waltz absolutely earned his Oscar in that scene alone. Thanks for reacting to this!
Post 2000 era?? I’ll dare to say all time
The Hugo Stiglitz intro might be my favorite moment from any QT movie.🤣👏
I always think of Hugo as Terror Billy from Wolfenstein. Same look.
For Landa he was so good at his job he practiced catch and release. He definately knew She was Shoshonna but decided to play w her like he was a cat and she was a mouse.
I've seen so many reactors recoil from the moment when Donnie "The Bear Jew" obliterates a Nazi, and seeing you two cheer it on so wholeheartedly is exactly what I imagine Tarantino wished from his audiences in that moment. I salute you, and bravo.
Edit: Also, you gotta watch Django Unchained for another masterful performance from Christoph Waltz.
Are we really any better than Nazis if we cheer on brutality like that?
Personally I just am not a fan of watching brutality like that but I can respect the idea 😂
100 Percent, no need for Nazi in the world. Including the ones that Trump protects
Not many people who watch this first time see all of Landa's motivations and very well put that he likes to play with his food. One thing to add is that Aldo put no effort into his Italian because he quickly realised that Landa knew everything anyway, but was withholding for some reason, so he was just playing it out to see what would happen.
You just talking
I absolutely love Tarantino films and this is no doubt my favorite Tarantino film.
He has some major duds as well. Inglorious basterds is in my top 5 movies all time. Hateful 8 is pretty good. Same with django.
But then you get some movies so bad i cant even finish or wont ever watch again.
Reservoir dogs
Pulp fiction
Once upon a time in hollywood
To name a few.
@@WheresWaldo05 those are not bad, you just don’t like them for whatever reason but those three movies you just mention are masterpieces on there own.
@@barbastos Movies are subjective. I think they are some of the worst movies ever made. Spielberg is the only director that did not ever make a flop. Every other director has flops. And Tarantino didnt make very many movies. But the flops are there.
@@WheresWaldo05 you really think those are some of the worst movies ever made? Your haven't seen many movies then. I mean I get that you didn't like them, Tarantino is far from perfection, but goddamn....there are really bad movies out there, and the ones you mention are not even close to been the worst.
@@barbastos Movies are subjective.
And lol-ing at the fact i own over 700 dvds and 400 bluerays. And that is just what i own. Not what i have seen. Which is easily double that.
I will repeat.... art is subjective!!!!!!
P.s. big man taking the lords name in vein.
Hans Landa is terrifying in the same style as Anton Chigurh. Absolutely amazing performance.
Yep, he’s basically just a more polite and eloquent Anton Chigurh
Great comparison
Anton was super weird
37:43 Hugo Stiglitz: is played by Til Schweiger, one of the most famous and popular actors here in Germany!
I’m in America and I love Til. I’ve seen him in quite a few movies and he never disappoints!
Hey fun fact I’m sure someone already said it, but the dude who gets scalped at 8:22 is actually Tarantino himself. Keep up the awesome reviews guys!
I know you can say this about every Tarantino film in my opinion, but Inglorious Basterds is a damn great highly rewatchable film. That opening is one of the best movie openings ever.
Inglorious Bastards has several incredibly dramatic rewatchable scenes that last like 5 minutes feel like 10
No doubt this was my personal favorite Tarantino film ever. The bar scene was intense 😬😂
Christoph Waltz gave the performance of a lifetime. In English, German, French AND Italian. The whole cast (except the "bastards") were FANTASTIC. Daniel Bruhl, Melanie Laurent, Micheal Fassbender; Diane Kruger, all outstanding. Some many great scenes. The two standouts - The opening scene is great, but the "gunfight in the basement" is phenomenal. The writing, the pacing, the acting. 1st class. Up to this point, this was Tarantino's "masterpiece". However, he just kept getting better imo. Great reaction, love the channel 🙂
First time i saw Christoph Waltz was in this movie, and i instantly became a fan
27:40 when Zoller bursts into the projection booth, I love how your facial expressions are exactly the same during this part
As a history teacher I always say that this is how WW2 History shoulda gone down. Favorite quote: “we in the nazi killing business….and cousin, business is-a boomin’” 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
“People she dislikes.” Understatement of the year.
There's a ton to like about this movie, but one of my favorite parts is the introduction of Hugo Stiglitz with the guitar.
Nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Picture but won for Best Supporting Actor Christoph Waltz.
Personally this maybe the best run I have seen on this channel with commando, Taxi driver, highlander and now inglorious basterds
That final line is absolutely Tarantino himself speaking, and the only thing that stops it from being true is that he topped himself with Django Unchained. It was insane seeing this in the theater, with absolutely no indication this would be an alternate history story until Hitler gets shot in the face.
And funny thing is Christoph Waltz is in BOTH movies, AND won a OSCAR for both movies lol.
neither Django or Basterds is QT's masterpiece. pulp fiction is & always will be.
@@USCFlash kill bill is
@@memnarch129
What is funny about that? A talented actor wins two acting Oscar's for doing excellent work in two great films, makes you laugh out loud?
That is pretty bizarre.
@@USCFlash to me it's this one with Pulp Fiction as a close second
Christoph Waltz fully deserved all his awards for his role in this movie.
The SS major in the pub is the same major who picked up Shoshone at her theater
After seeing this and Django (which you guys should watch), I was convinced of Tarantino's (and Christoph's) genius.
Hans Landa is up there with Joker, Anton Chigurr, etc. Heard of the SS interrogator that was the best at his job and all he did was be nice to the people he was interrogating, chills
We had a saying in the Army... "No plan survives first contact" and you can really see that on display in this film.
If there's one thing that's for certain.. the greatest villains are always called Hans
I walked out of the Theatre opening night saying over and over Christophe Waltz was winning the Oscar for his performance. This movie jump started his career. I was so happy to see u guys were watching this. I couldn’t click fast enough 🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠
Christoph Waltz is so humble he actually said that he believes any good actor could have played his role in this.
that's not humility, it's a simple fact that he correctly acknowledges. any good actor could play a great character as written. if that actor could do as great a job as Waltz did...well that's another story.
@@USCFlash I don't believe that. They may play them well but not exactly like he did which we all know we love. Also, humility is the lack of pride or arrogance and to make a statement like that, even when true, means you're still being humble to recognize the truth rather than allowing your big head to get in the way.
@@AdamtheGrey02
it's not humility, nor is there a suggestion he would be prideful or arrogant. none of them are necessary.
it's just a normal statement.
" They may play them well but not exactly like he did which we all know we love."
yes, but you'd never have seen him had another good actor taken the role.
You'd not have a clue what you missed.
You'd like or love the character because it is brilliantly written.
the only reason you cannot conceive of anyone else being great is because Waltz is the only one you'll ever see in it & he was great.. this goes for any legendary role.
@@USCFlash I never suggested he would. Anyone who makes that statement would be considered humble because humility is the lack of pride which is what he is when he made it.
Every actor may play a role similar, however they'll never play it exactly the same as he did since they do not have the exact same personalities, memories, experience that are incorporated into their roles. So far what we do know is how he played it, worked. Everything else is subjective since it would be impossible to erase time and our memories, go back and have someone else play it, then bring back our memories and compare. No point arguing since it can't be factually proven.
@@AdamtheGrey02
Actually it can be factually proven, that had another good or great actor taken the role, you would not know who Waltz was, or how he'd have done. The only reference you would have, is who you saw.
This and Kill Bill are my personal favorite from Tarantino...Absolutely nailed it 🔥🔥
This is what one of my favorite Quinton Tarantino movies
Almost all of his movies are perfect except for one absolutely terrible movie!
Death proof!
@@nicktechnubyte1184 I kinda enjoyed Death Proof. He was definitely paying homage to 70s exploitation grind house movies. If you can watch it for what it is I think it’s pretty fun.

One of Tarantino's top nine films. Christoph Waltz steals every scene and gives a master class in intimidation.
I didn't know how badly I needed this until I got it
So fun fact Adam Sanler was originally cast as Sgt. Donnawitz but did Funny People instead
"It's like he's playing with his food..." is a fantastic way to describe Landa.
Quentin Tarantino is one of the absolute best directors. His place as a director and the place of his films are firmly set in history. I'm not sure if he knows the tremendous benefit and inspiration he has brought to people the world over.
That moment when Landa whips out fluent italian is just delicious.

The first 2 minutes of this video were like a fever dream. I don't want to say Curtis has lost his mind but the sanity is certainly slipping. And I'm here for it.
Everyone skips over Jackie Brown, albeit with the exception of a handful of reactors. It is just my favorite of the bunch. With the best performance going to Samuel L. Jackson.
A lot of reactors come back to it once they've run through the "big" films.
That's a great film. Love the slow burn.

I admit, the introduction of Sgt Donny "The Bear Jew" Donowitz in Chapter 2 is by far my favorite part for the whole movie. Christopher Waltz did a great job, but meeting the infamous "Bear Jew" was definitely a highlight for me.
The scene when the cinema burns gave me Carrie vibes with Shoshanna's giant face laughing pleased by her well planned revenge
I'm a Kill Bill guy from the word go, but this has really grown on me over the years.
Adam Sandler was going to play the Bear Jew, but he was already committed to the movie Funny People and both movies filmed at the same time.
Eli Roth did a good job.

In the scene where he orders milk for her that tells you he knows who she is, but in another cruel twist of his character he orders the strudel with cream.
