  • I have now created a custom board which does a similar job but with a dedicated interface store.eplop.co.uk/product/epe...
    Here we have the latest revision of the RS485 to WiFi adaptor with built in RJ45 connector for easy usability.
    This is not so much an in depth explanation but a build video with a talk about the board :-)
    I will update the stock soon but for now the Tindie link is: -

    As you know I like the improved design. Does make it easier and quicker to build. Cheers Colin

      Hi Adam, it's so much quicker from not having to cut a network cable in two and tin the fine wires etc or even making one up from scratch.

    Great the Victron PWM Pro looks exactly like this solar controller. Same protocol and all. Will try to do it also.

    • @Chickey
      @Chickey  5 років тому +1

      Hey Mike, i'd just double check the pintout on the RJ45 connector though before connecting. Also the code i run is checking for specific registers on the EPEver and i would imagine the Victron would be running different registers. Worth looking into.

    • @mikegleasonjr
      @mikegleasonjr 5 років тому +1

      @@Chickey indeed the pinout indicates 12v instead of 5v for starters. I will have to redo it myself but just the idea is something in itself, so thanks for that!

    Hi Colin
    Great product works really well as real-time monitor of my solar setup in the shed. I see on the settings tab you have mqtt and influxdb configs. How would I use these to send the real-time data to an influxdb database I have running on a raspberry pi on my Lan? I am using RS485-WiFi v0.60 software. Any instructions would be great as to how I access the data and what format is it in plain ascii, JSON formatted?

    Cool little board update. I may be questioning the obvious to you, but does it pull the power via the RJ45 cable? I have looked at the traces and assume the EPEver provides power down the cable? What would be the best MQTT charge controller to get as you said this one is PWM? Guessing here in the UK we need to squeeze the Sun as much as we can?!!

    • @Chickey
      @Chickey  5 років тому +1

      Hi Stephen, Yeah on the epever it provides 5v which is stepped down to 3.3v for the ESP. I'm using a MPPT charge controller in my live setup but in all honestly i'm not sure it's as important as it used to be now panels are so cheap. I run an EPEver tracer 3210A which is a 30A model. The biggest difference between this and say a landstar model is the MPPT but also a higher input voltage, as it's MPPT it can have up to 100v rather than 50v for a landstar. However a 30A landstar and 30A tracer are still limited to the same amount of PV input. Oh the Epever has bigger input terminals (10mm).

    I built a custom radio system for my EPEver systems, using that same RS485 adapter board you've used, but I've had 3 EPEver units stop communicating after a length of time, and even the factory USB cable no longer works. Have you had any issues with your equipment and had to repair? I'm assuming the internal RS485 IC has failed (looks crispy) but I can't pull any info off of it to get a replacement figured out. Have you?

    Hi, I've purchased a v1.6 board and installed a Wemos D1 Mini with esp-link and my goal is to allow home assistant to communicate with my Epever Tracer 3210AN and draw some nice graphs with data from influxdb. Is there a guide online anywhere for setting up the v1.6 with a D1 Mini ? your videos so far only appear to cover v1.5 and the ESP-01 chips. Will the default pin configuration of esp-link work with this board ? So far I've not managed to get the epever software to work using a virtual serial port.
    I also have seen mention that you think this could automatically publish to MQTT or InfluxDB, I would be very interested in a detailed guide on this as from what I've read on the esp-link pages this would require another microcontroller. Maybe I've misunderstood ?

    Hi, I am wondering if this will work on "AN" common negative epever tracer units ?
    Tindie says: It has been confirmed tested and working on the following boards - LS1024B - Tracer 3210A - MPPT Tracer1210 - Tracer AN - TRIRON Series with RS485 module
    Eplop Electronics says: The boards have been tested on the landstar and tracer controllers, it does however not currently work with the new common negative tracer model.

    Another great video Colin.
    One of your earlier videos inspired me to build my own wifi box but I've spent the last 4 days trying to get data to appear on the solar station software...having exhausted my knowledge and ability (although I'm now an expert in flashing 8266 modules!) I've come to think that my RS485 converter module is duff. You mention in this video that you've had a few duff ones, so could you please let me know where I can get hold of a module that will actually work???
    I'm quite impatient these days so I don't want to wait weeks for it to ship from China - any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
    I've learnt a great deal along the way with this project but I'm super-frustrated that I can't get it to work.
    Keep inspiring us!
    cheers.

    Hey Colin, Many thanks fro your inspirational videos. Between you and Adam you seem to really know your way around the epever devices. I have posted a similar question on Adams page, but wanted to see if you had any pointers at all....
    I have recently bought a Epever upower hybrid charger / inverter which also has a RS485 modbus port and would love to get to a remote monitoring dashboard like you and others mention however I am having trouble with the basics..
    Before I go into the dashboard, I thought I would just try some python scripts to read the data. I looked at scripts such as github.com/kasbert/epsolar-tracer and simple pymodbus scripts such as stackoverflow.com/questions/57313343/modbus-cant-read-data-from-epever-tracer-1210a-to-raspberry
    None of them worked however I could get the Windows software provided by epever to work but who wants to look at a Windows laptop !!
    Have you ever tried talking to one of these upower devices ? Can you think of any pointers that may help ? Have you tried your wifi adapter with them ?
