An evening with a new Jan Beta video, is a good evening! Thanks for that! It is nice to see, how you and your content developed over the years. BTW: You are the guilty one! You are guilty of making me bought a C64 on an eBay auction! ;) Never had one as a kid, I have had a VIC-20 and a CPC6128. Cheers from Norderstedt, Lutz
@JanBeta: Short Update: C64 C & 1541 II arrived, bit dirty (chocolate, coffee?), but NP.. shower and "Glasreiniger" for the win! Everything is working and no yellowing at all (removed the typical Allkauf-Sticker and there is no difference), Lucky!
Nicely done Jan! Here are some 128k 130XE games for you to try. Alternate Reality: The Dungeon, Bop’n Wrestle, Infiltrator, Karateka, The Goonies, Barahir, Artefakt Przodkow, and Megablast, Gato, and Ace of Aces. Those 10 should get ya started :)
Most of those carts, although 128KB in size (e.g. those shown GATA & Tower Toppler), don't use the extra RAM of the 130XE. @Jan - Another good test would be STUNT CAR RACER
Greetings from Serbia, I have been watching your projects for a long time and in the sea of UA-camrs across the Atlantic, you are a rare representative of the old continent. Keep it up, some more videos with guitars and amps if possible. And one complaint, with your videos, the sound "squeals" and "buzzes" to me, and it's very irritating. I've tried all possible settings, both on the computer and on the hi-fi amplifier (when I'm watching, i.e. listening through it) and only lowering the equalizer all the way down helps. That's why I ask you to take a little more account of the sound when editing the recordings, if that's possible. Don't stop at the criticisms, they are completely well-intentioned and aimed at improving the quality of your work.
Hey, no worries! Thanks for the constructive criticism. I am aware of the sound problems and am working on it. I think my mic might just be crapping out. :)
@@JanBeta I'm a bit late but sometimes it can be caused by humidity in the capsule - I've seen some people successfully rescue mics others have thrown-away (for making clicking, buzzing, or hissing noises) by really intensively drying them out.
If the keycaps almost fit then you could try using threadlocker on them. If there's a large discrepancy then you could try using hot glue on them with a layer of plastic wrap to keep the glue out of the switches.
Threadlocker is a good idea. They fit pretty loose and only fall out sometimes when I flip the machine. Should be relatively minor to get them to hold a bit better.
Two reasons you're original memory expansion didn't work. 1) Could be down to the speed of the GAL chip. 2) Parasitic Capacitive Coupling, Common thing to run into when running wires across a board and or over chip IC's. You could try tidying the wire even thicker gauge wire can help.
Yes, many options for modern badges. I haven't really decided which one I want but the original one definitely needs replaced (it's pretty scratched anyway).
red screen usually points to RAM, but I had an XEGs with bad ROM and a faulty CPU. The CPU worked with specific games so I am sure it had nothing to do with the color error.
The screen is red because the OS crashed before it had a chance to initialise the video hardware, so the problem could be CPU if you already replaced the RAM. Delay line IC is also a common failure point on the XLs.
Some homebrews that use 128k memory: Last Squadron, Bosconian (with enchancements), Prince of Persia, Gacek (Bomb Jack clone), Final Assault (impressive 3D shooter).
Personally, I don't like these massive memory upgrades. Keep it realistic. For the Commodore A500 for instance, 4 MB could be reasonable, but 128 MB is far too much, even if it is possible. But in my A600 for instance, I go with 1 MB Stock just to keep it "retro".
@@JanBetaThe 74 series also exist as 54 and 84 I think, with military and industrial specs respectively. Maybe worth a look for otherwise unobtainable chips.

Have you ever ordered anything from Vesalia Computer? Guido runs the place out of his house nowadays and it seems he still uses an Amiga to do his invoicing as the invoice I received was printed on an old 9-pin printer.
Yes, I've ordered a couple of times from them. Lovely that the invoice came as an old-school printout. If I remember correctly, I got a dot matrix printout, too. :)
Great mod, may I try this with my 800XE? Anyway, after obtaining AVGcart or even better SUBcart, no mods are really necessary for the stock 64K machine.
Thanks! The 800XE should use the same board revisions as the 65XE, so if you have the one with the 8 RAM chips, the mod should work in that one, too. If you get one of the modern expansion, you don't need the mod as you said. :)
I don’t really get the point of having memory beyond 64k on these eight bit machines, You still have to load the the data off tape or disk and then bank switch, its not like you can address the whole 320k in a flat address space
There’s quite a few games and demos created recently that make use of the expanded memory in very elegant ways. If you only want the classic experience, of course 64 or 128k are enough. :)
I've also done a 65XE to 130XE upgrade. It was easy to do. Difference, my board was a last revision of the XE board with 4 bit memory chips. I also had a 130XE board which was beyond repair, so I could take the MMU chip and some needed logic from it. Adding 2x 4 bit RAM IC's was sufficient to upgrade the RAM to 128KB. I have the TL-866II programmer, which is able to program ATF16V8 chips, as original GAL chips are getting a bit scarce.
As far as I know (as a relative Atari noob), there are some modern games and demos that require more memory but the 128k should cover all the software from back in the day indeed. :)
you sure the 320kb expansion isnt for ntsc? if thats a pal machine, perhaps it was just the timing? i know there is a lot of frustration involved, i think you should give it another try, and maybe use the 130xe gal you just programmed in the 320xe mod?
The 320k expansion was designed on a PAL machine as far as I know. I even got a set of known to work chips from Jürgen who designed the mod at one point. Still didn't work properly in my machine. :D
Please don't start a video with "Hi, I've decided to call it quits" that nearly made me jump out of my chair :D
Same here…
ha, I almost did as well.
Phew.. heart skipped a beat
Haha, sorry. I didn't realize that. No worries, I'm not going to quit making videos anytime soon!

Yes you can. New ones.

I wonder if Jazzycat knows what the 320KB issue may be. Moot point now.
Anyone know why an Atari 800XL will boot to a red screen? I've already replaced the memory. Not sure where else to go.
Could be GTIA? Aside from that, I have no clue.

Yay great work. Wonder if the Lutherek ultimate 1med upgrade would work in that machine?
Yes, it should work. That's my secret plan for the future of this machine. ;)
Memory access issues might need analysis with logic analyser or scope. Probably timing issues or several types of distortion.
