Older Riders: Let Yourself Say 'YES' More Often

- I'm just back from a four-day motorcycle road trip on my Triumph Scrambler 900 with new friends. I've come to realize that, when you learn to say 'yes' instead of staying in your comfort zone, you open up a whole new world of adventures, friendships and possibilities. If you're an older motorcycle rider like myself, you might be inclined to pass up opportunities to join others on group rides and longer group tours. In this video I'll try to persuade you to say 'yes', to forget your doubts and insecurities, and to take the plunge.
You won't regret it.

This is a very insightful message and nicely delivered from the saddle of a motorcycle. I’m 73 and still dealing with this as an issue. It’s too easy to stay home, go on local rides, and then climb back into my big, comfortable chair at home. Unfortunately, that’s not where memories are made. Thanks for the inspiration!

Good message. I just got back from a five day trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota; never been there, it was on my bucket list. I rode completely alone. No back up, no one there if things went bad. I camped out except for one night. Had a complete blast. I put over 1600 miles on the bike. I ride all the time, usually daily, but never a long trip like that. It needed to be done. It was a great thing for my personal growth. I will say YES more and more now. Going solo was great; just me, the bike, and my thoughts.
Agreed! Saying 'yes' doesn't always mean saying 'yes' to other people. It also means saying 'yes' to yourself. That would have been good advice to add to my video...
An awesome message for anyone, but especially for those of us who have made over 50 trips around the sun. Similarly, I've been trying to flip the script when I hear objections like "why do x?" when I want to try something new. When I ask "why not?", the objections rarely hold up. It's the reason I just got my motorcycle license - something I've wanted to do since I was a teenager, but always yielded to those "whys". It's the reason my wife and I have decided to sell our house and move to a dream location after spending 23 years in one spot. When you say yes, you start living actively instead of waiting for life to come to you. Thanks for this one, Bug.
My wife and I did the same thing in 2006. Left the place we both grew up in and headed west, 'just because.' Best decision we ever made.
@@BugMotoChannel I just got back from a dealership and got to sit on a couple. This will be my first, but I have been telling myself no for too long and just did it. Some guy on UA-cam reminded me to say YES. After throwing a leg over, I was in love. Is that crazy? I think not. Haven't pulled the trigger yet, but I'm pretty sure it's happening soon. :P And yes, I'm still talking about motorcycles.
@@jftalarico You and me both man! I'm 68 and bought my V Star 250 two years ago. Signed up for beginners course at LCCC down the street. Early August.

Moved to France beginning 2023 and changed my live by saying yes.
Have been single most of my live, never a fixed relation but here I met the love of my live. French woman that moved in after only two weeks and it's great, she is younger still works while I am stopped with work. Drive bikes for almost 55 years and have eight bikes now, down from ten. She has never driven a bike so last year I took here on a short ride to some friends of here and she liked it. Live is evolving all the time.
Young riders pick a destination and go... Old riders pick a direction and go.

I just did this yesterday. My bike was still in break-in and a couple of the riders had big liter bikes. I was afraid my wee Triumph 400 would hold them up, and the faster riders would get frustrated. I was so wrong. They said they would be happy to take the slower back roads. They just wanted me to ride with them.
I hit road while it was still dark out and loved those first miles alone. Nice quiet empty roads and cool-ish air (I’m in Florida). We met up at a WAWA then a Racetrack collecting BMWs, Harleys, and a Busa! Had a great ride and a great breakfast. It had to be over 100 F by 11:30am, but before I could say it’s too hot the leader found a nice empty bar. Some got beer, some Cokes, and we all had lots of laughs took photos and videos just being little hooligans, but not assholes. It can be a fine line. Then off we went our separate ways home in groups of 2 or 3. Best ride I’ve had since I got back into riding just this year after too many years away.

Hi great vid somebody once said the hardest mile is the first one as l got older I found that to be true after that I settle into the ride all good from there stay free
Thanks for sharing your journey to change you view of what can make you anxious about being social, accepted for who you are and open to new relationships. As a therapist and motorcycle rider I would say I have had the best time connecting with many bikers, and get why it has helped me get a little more extroverted - wanting to meet new people and experience being the genuine me. This has changed my social anxiety to almost no fear of being accepted. When I feel rejected it isn't a big deal - 'not everyone gets me'. I simply accept that some will and some will not.

Thank you so much. Yeah, 'not everyone gets me' is an important thing I've come to realize, and sort of embrace. Feeling rejected is so much better than not being yourself.
Daniel, you’re killing it with these videos! So true about just putting yourself out there. Being older and a fairly new rider I’m building up the courage, or whatever you want to call it, to ride from PDX to Seattle next month to visit family. Just gotta do it, who knows what’s next in this life.
I recognize NW West Union Rd in the beginning. I ride that one nearly everyday on my T120 black. It’s a blast!
Thank you! The route we took up to Seattle was a breeze. I can share it with you. We took a ferry over and it was amazing. The nice thing about the ferry is, you get to skip the line if you're on a motorcycle. You go right to the front, and you're the first to get off. And it's like $9! Best ever.
I’m still adventurous and daring at the tender young age of 65! As long as I have my facilities, strength, wisdom and knowledge, then I will continue to go for it! As far as fellow riders go, I can take them or leave them especially if I find them to be irresponsible and dangerous riders. Ride Your Ride and Keep The Rubber Side Down. ✌️
I’ve had social anxiety ever since I was bullied as a teenager.
I feel pretty crap around people, and find them draining , I also keep running over what I said to them. It’s crazy
Same boat. And it took a long time to realize that those people and their opinions don’t matter. Finally letting go of defining myself through the perceived opinions of other has been wonderful
Great message. I got back a few weeks ago from a 4,200 mile epic ride in the US with an old buddy taking us from Mansfield MA down to Tennessee, up to the Canadian border and back to Mansfield over 23 days. We rode on the TAT and DBR trails on much of it. I rode a 690 Enduro and my buddy a Tiger 900. I’m 65 and he’s 60. As they say, JFDI!

I've been full time on the road for 3 years and I've been training myself to say Yes. One time I pulled over on a side street to see where Mr GPS was taking me. A guy pulled up next to me to see if I was OK and we chatted a bit. His wife was leaving the neighborhood, she pulled over and we all chatted a bit. She left then he invited me to his house just 2 streets over saying he had a bike lift and a lot of tools I was welcome to use, or just come on over to hang for a while. I graciously declined. Not even two miles down the road I was mad at myself. Why didn't I say, YES?!?
I had told him what hotel I was heading for and he ended up contacting me and we had dinner together. Since then I've used that as a lesson, an example, why I need to say YES more.

I missed out on 30 years of motorcycling. Re-introduced myself and my wife to motorcycling using C an-Am three wheel Spyder trikes two years ago. Didn’t realize how much fun I had been missing. I really enjoy riding my Spyder. My wife enjoys hers too, but not as much as I do riding mine. Ride Safe.
Funny, my Facebook memory from today, was 4 years ago at the DMV during the peak of Covid. I spent close to 9 hours day one, and just shy of 7 the other time. I'm 58 now and only regret not starting sooner.

You describe so well how I'm feeling and I thank you for giving me this realisation. It's easy to hide away and find reasons not to do things. Now I have to do something about it!
Well said and I feel the same way. This is the main reason I recently joined the VespOhio scooter group. Been on two rides with them so far. I plan to do another one in two days. It’s been fun to get out, meet new people, and just enjoy the adventure. I would consider myself an introvert but can hold my own in social situations. This forces me to do the latter. Life’s too short to worry about it anyway. Wish I could go back in time and tell that to my younger self.
People are like Motorcycles: each is customized a bit differently.
Some have parts that don't work so well. Some have issues getting started in the morning. Some can only run so long before they need a rest...

Another great video topic Bug! We are getting older by the minute and life is far too short. Enjoy life to the absolute fullest possible. Like I said in another post, to me, motorcycle touring is tantamount to "communion on two wheels". And as a follow-up to that it is difficult to enjoy "communion" without like-minded people to commune with on two wheels. Anxiety is a mind over matter equation to me...I don't mind, because anxiety don't matter. I let it all go and enjoy the ride with like-minded friends. If some people don't like me, or I don't like them, I just respectfully part ways and do my own thing, again with like-minded people. Thanks for sharing!
On another note myself and four motorcycle buddies are taking a 2,000 mile 5 day motorcycle trip over the North Cascades into Central and eastern Washington, western Idaho and western Montana at the end of July. It is going to be a blast!

Yes!! I feel this so much! Riding has helped me so much. I honestly can’t believe I didn’t just crumble into an anxious puddle when my bike blew a fuse on my way back from Canada. But I really just stopped, breathed deep, and said “ok, how do I fix this”. So I did. And my Vespa has made me so many new introductions to new people! And I can go whenever I want! I’ll have a lot to say about this in my final video about my trip. Thank you for sharing this!!
I had the same feeling when I dumped my motorcycle a week or two back on a gravel road. I stood there looking at it, with an inflated air bag under my jacket, and instead of freaking, I kinda laughed and said, "Hmm. How am I gonna get myself out of this shit??" Taking that step back to understand the problem almost always leads to the solution. Freaking over it just leaves you baffled.

I said yes when my daughter texted me about riding on the 4th. It was my first time out of our development onto regular city streets! After3-4 laps around the development. Had some TT moments on my V Star 250. Spunky bike designed to compete with the Sportster. About the same size as a mid-80's one. Daughter rode her Virago 650 classic cruiser.

But yeah man, I LOVE my scrambler so much, I honestly feel that it's my dream bike. Scrambler has always been my favorite flavor of motorcycle and with the modern electronics and fuel injection, it is literally perfect.
@@Magicks Hey, while I have you here... One thing about my Scrambler is, it pulls to the right when I take my hands off the bars. I'm told this might be an imbalance because of the weight of the stock exhaust. I've got slash-cut pipes on the way, so hoping that fixes the issue, but I find it insane that Triumph would ship a bike with a design flaw like this. Did you find the same issue when you had stock pipes on yours? I have a feeling it's something else - maybe a misaligned back wheel or something. It's in the shop right now to have that looked at, and also to have a starting issue sorted. It dies after the first start when it's cold. Seems like a software issue...
(Otherwise, yeah, agreed, it's really perfect. Exactly what I wanted)
@@BugMotoChannel honestly I never noticed it pulling in either direction even when I had the stock pipe on but I also very rarely ride no handed, I always have one hand on the bars. I'll give it a test when I go for a ride later today. Wondering if maybe one of the rear shocks is at a different setting than the other as well, would be worth checking. I've been having the same cold start issues but now I just blip the throttle when it starts to sound like it's going to die and it keeps the engine going.

An excellent essay on the power riding has to change your life. All it takes is that first step and in your story saying "Yes." It's funny, as I write this comment I am wearing a black T-shirt with the word "No" on it. That word a reminder of humility in that God answers all prayers even though sometimes the answer is "No." But I digress....
Saying yes is important, especially for someone like me who probably isn't far from a similar place as you. And as my 70th birthday nears saying yes to things is more important than ever. Unfortunate medical circumstances at home though make it ever more difficult so say yes though.
My most recent video posted a few days ago echoes a similar experience as yours albeit much shorter. But the powerful connections now available because of riding are there. And like you I've learned to leave my crystal ball packed away so I don't dwell so much on those "What ifs..."

As an older riding I ride a lot with people I don’t know that well even overnight rides , but for some reason I can never share a room with other people I always book a single room
It does not matter where you sleep. It is your time during the day when you interact with your fellow riders that matters!

Totally agree, and to be honest, I'd always choose a single room if I have the choice. I really, REALLY enjoy having my own space at night, especially after a long hard day.
