It's something that some people are very split on, some boss fights are interesting for uninteresting reasons and vice versa, but I also wonder why not just make Allant just a regular NPC who is completely optional trivialising the idea of killing him when you are inside the 'Old one' in the first place.

Saren had a personal connection to the player characters and also came off as a tortured soul, since he was being controlled by the Reapers but still had a sliver of his own free will in there. The Human Reaper was just a big monster, and was way less intriguing.

I know it's old but I'd also include Mother Brain in Super Metroid. Once you reach a certain point in the fight, which doesn't take much to get to, it's almost impossible to lose. I like that the Metroid saves you and grants you a super weapon but after that you can basically just stand there and hold the shoot button. Was kinda hoping for more.

    • @CyberdustStudios
      @CyberdustStudios Рік тому +1

It was intentionally done that way. Samus had been rescued by the Metroid hatchling and healed her only to be killed by mother brain. Samus, armed with a super laser, in an act of vengeance, blasts mother brain until she is dead. If they really wanted to make it a challenge, they would not have added those scripted sequences throughout the fight. This was because they wanted to make the fight serve the narrative, to leave an impact, which made it all the more memorable.
If substance is what you prefer in terms of bosses over spectacle, i respect that. But I don't think its worthy of being on this list though.
TL:DR Boss is a playable cutscene that is supposed to serve the story. I respec ur opinion, but I disagree.

No it doesn't lol. the human reaper from ME2 was the perfect representation of how awful a lot of the writing was in that game. ME2 had great visuals, voice acting, music, etc. But what really carried it was the characters. The issue is that all of that merely helped hide just how bad the main plot of the game was and how nonsensically it plays out. Seriously, it's clear that almost nothing in the plot was planned out, and the human reaper is the perfect microcosm of the terrible writing. The lore behind the human reaper is just stupid. There's no other way to put it. It's made even worse by the fact that ME1 had a great plot and storytelling. ME2 added a co-lead writer, Mac Walters, and it really, really, really showed. It shows even more in ME3 when he became the lead writer.
The human reaper was fine as a 'final boss' in that it was a big monster that you have to fight, and the gameplay was... fine. Not good, but not bad. Just fine. The issue was with the design and the lore implications and how utterly asinine they were lol.

William Afton in FNAF Security Breach was also somewhat disappointing. Surprised it didn't make the list.
Sure, lore-wise it shows that not even death can keep the series's main villain down, there was no build up to his reveal. The right to be final boss should have gone to Vanny.

There's a difficult dichotomy for games where the antagonist is not some form of 'super creature' or such, but a 'mastermind' or 'leader of troops' type adversary. Colonel Autumn is disappointing for not being a beefy boss fight just for the sake of a beefy boss fight... Frank Fontaine is disappointing for being a beefy boss fight just for the sake of a beefy boss fight.
I remember this sort of conversation all the way back to N64 Goldeneye where Alex is a crazy bullet sponge for no reason (other than he's the last boss) despite being just a human in plain clothes.
I'm genuinely wondering what the correct answer is when the adversary is Just A Guy who schemes or leads forces. You can go the "sudden overdose on ADAM" or "Nanomachines, son!" route, sure, but that still puts a villain whose primary threat was never physical brutality, in the position of being a primary threat solely of physical brutality, like Joker in Batman for instance dosing up on Titan. Or you can put them in a huge mech or something, but that doesn't feel right unless it's already their schtick (Robotnik and Wiley get a pass on that for instance, but it'd be really weird for Uncharted). How do you close out games with a mastermind type villain (instead of a brute type) satisfactorily, without giving them 11th hour super powers?

For me it's Legaia 2: Duel Saga. I liked the mechanics of the Legaia games, and Cort, the final boss of the first game, was intimidating and memorable. The final boss of the second game, Avalon, is a generic Martial Arts Guy who wants to destroy humanity for... some reason?
Also Vexx, because Dark Yabu was frustrating and difficult as hell, and also because the fight was super long and you had to start over at the beginning every time you died, which was often.

I disagree about Far Cry 3's Hoyt here, because his boss fight was QTE done well, preceded by a very tense Poker game scene, where Hoyt suddenly kills Sam and cuts Jason's finger, then they had tense talk and mutual strikes, and when his hallucination ends we see Jason managed to do a bloodbath in that closed room, not to mention doing a frantic run to save his younger brother Riley.
I would easily replace it with Joseph Seed in Far Cry 5, where somehow he suddenly turns all your main guns for hires against you and he multiplies himself during the gunfight... very lame.

the human reaper from ME2 was the perfect representation of how awful a lot of the writing was in that game.

    (Uncharted)
Atoq Navarro. This villain is a human. No special powers or abilities to call upon. I don't think that he's even got military training (but my memory isn't too great); but he's not what I would call a 'boss enemy'. I reserve that for the main villain of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, which yes, much more satisfying to fight.
    (Final Fantasy X)
Yu Yevon. Mother of JRPG boss fight disappointments.. But I would argue that this game is not 'great', but that would involve me going off topic. Yu Yevon is a boss that can be easily killed with the Zombify + Arise method (healing/restorative effects invert on undead enemies), reviving is replaced with instant kill. When I got to the end of this game, I was largely disappointed after all of the buildup of what a dangerous threat he was made out to be.
    (Fallout 3)
Technic-Lee your father in that game kills himself so that Colonel Autumn can't seize control of Project Purity on behalf of the Enclave, triggering a lethal radiation leak in the main chamber. Autumn manages to save himself by injecting himself with a serum (perhaps a much more potent version of rad-x).
Aside from that, Colonel Autumn could've been stronger as a boss. No superpowers, because that would undermine his involvement with the Enclave, who are heavily focused on 'genetic purity'. I would say give him a unique power armor to help him stand out, with a gatling laser, or a Multiplas Rifle.
    (Skyrim)
Alduin is a bit of a letdown. At lower levels, he might be more threatening, especially with the meteors he summons, but he treated no more differently than other dragons. Most gamers also spend time grinding out their smithing or enchanting skills to make their weapons stupidly overpowered. In other words: go to Sovengarde at level 1, and you're going to have a rough time. Go to Sovengarde at like level 80, you sneeze, and you miss the fight.
Maybe it was a limitation of the game engine at the time, but Alduin could've had a few extra tricks up his sleeve, like Miraak in the Dragonborn DLC, but eating the souls of the dead to replenish his strength (considering that's why he travelled to Sovengarde in the first place). If he was eating the souls of the old heroes mid fight it would've really added to his menace, too.

wahwahwahwahwahwhaaaaat? Ezio Not killing Rodrigo "Out of character"? Have you heard of "character development"?
    1. At that point in his life, Ezio was 20 years on from when his father and brothers were killed.
    2. He changed over time, in that he no longer sought vengeance, only understanding why it all happened in the first place. He even directly says this to Leonardo.
    3. He didn't realise at this point, that Rodrigo needed to die. He only thought at this point that, killing him was just petty vengeance on his part. Which sets up Brotherhood.
Nothing out of character at all for Ezio not killing Rodrigo. It also wasn't a boss fight, it was a lore fight. Yes he is the final enemy of the game. But it was never a boss fight, AC II was more about discovering the truth. Which is why the fight was just set up for the big reveal of the first civilisation rather than facing Rodrigo.
