Folks, this is the early version of “Highway Star”. They performed the song right after they wrote it in the bus. So this is 1971 performance on german TV. So this is “demo” version of the song. Just phenomenal how Ian Gillan singing on the go.
Gillan really made "mistakes" during this live version, but the way he compensates with improvisation or turnarounds is fantastic and inspirational. This "imperfect" version is one of my prefered.
Not mistakes. it's clearly an early version. Words were not all worked out, the solos are completely different than what ended up on the album and was reflect in every live performance after
Gillian didn't care about the lyrics.....he was on a German show and feeling no pain. LOL You youngsters out there, have a listen. This is how us old folks rocked back in the 70's. Classic rock at it's best.
most likely , in my opinion, the lyrics were probably not yet written at this time, which makes it all the more ballsy to play this one .....on TV ! although the band seems to have it down ...yet notice that the iconic solos by Lord and Blackmore are also not yet there. ........wb
LOL! Yes, it is rather magical and all he needs to complete his outfit is a flute...he could take a minute and a half and top this video off with a short flute solo as the wood creatures come to encircle the mystical musician. Thanks, Ruben.
BeckyLMC Rock on! I like attributing musicians with a certain element, being, or belief that they seem to represent or symbolize for whatever reason. I see Jimmy Page as a wizard/sage mage, Jimi Hendrix as an extraterrestrial gypsy, Robert Plant as a lion/golden sun god etc...
THIS is rock & roll. Ian is either blasted and can't remember the words; or song was so new=lyrics still being developed. I think David Lee Roth was doing an Ian influenced thing.
Intro from Made In Japan version of Highway Star still thrills me. Considered having it played just at the point when I go out feet first, just to wake everyone up.
I remember seeing deep purple back in the early seventies on Don kirshner's Rock concert. It was on a weekend and I was allowed to stay up late and watch it. Then when live from Japan was released I bought the vinyl which I still have. DP still rocks.

Larga vida Jon Lord tu música siempre sera tu legado, grandes tiempos Deep Purple.
Much better talent than today's computerized, auto-tuned, gimmick made, image based crap. "nuff said...need more Deep Purple please.....
Ultra difficult to sing this particular song in the manner Gillan is doing here! Absolute GENIUS rock band!!
Therefore until Purple get in, there is no Rock and Roll hall of fame.

Folks, get a good look at this video. This is rock and roll in it's purest form.
They don't make music like this anymore and they never will.
Sad but true...
MFSB sloppy. They don't have anything planned just bang away. It's trippy I'll give it that.
We will.
You got that right.
The moving finger writes, and having writ, moves on: nor all thy piety nor whit shall lure it back to cancel half a line.

This is an early version of "Highway Star"
BeckyLMC HIs hat may be pilgrim but his outfit makes him look like a mystical wizard!!!!! Pretty apt for the way he shreds is just magical!
