- Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd played Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took respectively in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films. Today I have interviewed them about their podcast The Friendship Onion and have asked them some questions concerning the role of Hobbits and the characters they played! Hey, man! So glad you got to talk to Billy and Dom as well! Great interview!
Thanks Matt, I appreciate it! I’m so glad it happened as well, it was such a once in a lifetime opportunity!
Yes very well done guys!
Billy Boyd was childhood friends with my mother and her family. Had nothing but great things to say about him. For a while I did not believe them until my gran confirmed it 😂😂😂
Someone in my family knew Tolkien himself
I knew *of* him, thats gotta count for something
🤦🏾♂️
Met Billy at Wales Comicon and chatted for about 10 mins, really nice humble guy :)
That's so cool!
They got taller. Dominic and Billy were hitting the Ent Juice again.
Does that stuff ever wear off?!?
It seems to have added some gravel to Dominic's voice as well.
Not only taller, but thinner. 😂
The thing that gives me GREAT happiness is that they are friends in real life. It make me feel like they jumped out of the story and into life. I don't know why but this fills me with warmth.
Same.
My favorite Merry Pippen moment is how they are eavesdropping on the council, get caught with no consequence and become part of the fellowship. Hugo weaving's expression when he realizes they were eavesdropping is priceless.
And Pippin says something like:
“Right! So where are we going?”
NO WAY THIS IS TOO SICK, EVERY TOLKIEN FANS DREAM 😍 congrats man
That Joker/Ronald McDonald shirt is the greatest
To be honest, I didn't even comprehend it until I was editing, it's SO amazing lol
Heck yea it's super🔥
Billy and Dom are doing lots of these interviews. Thats too cool.
Well yeah that's called advertising, they obviously need to make their podcast known so what better ways than doing the rounds of the most popular lotr yt channels? I for one hope their audience explodes, their show is a blast!
@@ProvencaLeGaulois yep better later than sooner here.
So the two coolest Hobbits were interviewed by Nerd of the Ring, AND Men of the West?
I think this is our communities second breakfast 😋
Love their podcast btw, very fun, very new, very interesting!
Not only SECOND breakfast... This is our Luncheon, Elevensies, Dinner and Supper, too...
Oh, my lord, Yoystan! You're only 22 years old?! All that talent in one so young - I will need to take better care of myself so that I can see what you are up to in twenty years, as you are destined for great things.
Thank you so much Mark, that means a lot! I am so thankful for where life has taken me, and for where it continues to go! I only hope to continue helping others and trying to help make the world a bit better where I can!
@@MenoftheWest jeez, we are the same age
They're going to talk about the Silmarillion a chapter at a time?
I'm torn as to which is going to be funnier, their reaction to the Ainulindalë or "Of Beleriand and its Realms" 🤣🤣🤣
New goal is getting an interview with all the cast members
you should watch the zoom meeting, organized by Josh Gad from Last Year :)
I think Ian would be the greatest out of all of them
@@MarelorMoon ngl Josh Gad really annoyed me during that.
Crazy how all the Hobbits visibly aged, except Elijah. Coincidence? I think not. Elijah is a ringwraith
Lol
Eli is also many years younger than the other Hobbits hehe
Or he secretly kept the ring...
@@ovrair6340 It's funny that you say that, he actually kept the ring in real life...
@@kukuvau3408 oh wow! I didn't know That, that's pretty cool
I did not know Billy wrote the song himself. Just wow!
Well.. The lyrics is from Tolkien himself from the fellowship of the ring when the hobbits are leaving Shire. Billy just came up with thw rythm and tone/key, not to take away anything from Billy.
@@TheZebbsonchannel yeah, that's what I meant as well. Melody, I should have said.
I saw this & was like "wait - what??!!"
These guys are so awesome.
Wait, Men of the West had NEVER seen the theatrical versions? I forget there's a whole generation of young-ins inspired by these books/films who aren't old enough to recall them being in theaters the first time. For me personally I'll never forget watching them on opening day with my friends when I was a teenager.
Omg they really are Hobbits. Your first question actually had them talk about food non-stop for a few minutes 😂😂😂
It's so nice to see that the characters they played shaped their friendship, so much so that they both are just as close as merry and pippin
All the hobbit actors are nothing but the loveliest people.
Amazing guys.
Wow that is crazy! First Nerd of the Rings now here. Really nice that they interact with us Tolkien UA-camrs/Creators so much. Their podcast is also fun ^^
Absolutely! It is so humbling. They are so great to talk to!
The Friendship Onion for the win!
“The greatest beginning of a movie I’ve ever seen!” Completely agree and was my experience when I saw it.
I haven't seen these two together since Dominic's nature show on the BBC when Dominic explored the wildlife of New Zealand.
The ent draught has kept making them grow more and more omg
1 of my favorite scenes in return of the King was when I think gandalf falls off of shadowfax when the witch king attacks pippin starts ti charge at the witch king. This hobbit dwarfed by the witch king and his fell beast was willing to attack and defend his friend even if the odds were 100 to 1 out of his favor (and most likely would've been eaten in a single bite) so good
Boy, i could not agree more. The Balrog/Gandalf scene just amazed me. The beginning of the Fellowship Of The Ring did so as well a year before.
Who else wants to see The Scouring of The Shire as a movie with these two as action stars, thwarting the invasion of Isengard? The only real problem is the passing of Christopher Lee.
Well, we had Tarkin and Luke at a young age back, as long as they respect the lore, I am totally on board
@@Enerdhil it sucks.. At least we get a peak of it in Fellowship when Frodo watch what will come to pass if he would fail
To be fair that was probably the weakest part of the book in many people's opinions. I guess the point of it was to show just how low the once mighty Saruman had fallen, and kinda a redemption for Frodo for failing to destroy the ring at the last minute but it would have really killed the flow of the movie after the heros trimumputh ending the war of the ring and Sauron, also its way too short to be its own movie but too long to be shortened down to a 10 min subplot at the end. I personally think it was a really good idea to not include it in the last movie.
@@PortCityBalrog
I’m pretty sure that many readers actually love that chapter, and that you won’t find many people that consider it the weakest part. The purpose of the chapter is to show how much the four hobbits have grown on their journey. They are able to free the Shire without the help of Gandalf or Aragorn. And they do it with very little bloodshed.
But I agree that it didn’t fit in the movie.
I subscribed to them and been watching since! Awesome you got to interview them man awesome work!
That must have been one of the greatest honors of any Tolkien fan. They seem like very down to earth guys. Very fun to watch and listen to!
Awesome opportunity to interview these fellas! Nice job!
Look at you! I wonder which of the cast will find their way here next:)
OMG I did not see this interview coming, that's so great 😊
Love these guys so much. The main cast of LOTR was just filled with incredible people and that has really helped it become a timeless classic.
Greatness! 😎
I would be starstruck and I am 23 good job on hosting this without just losing your voice.
Nice! It's always good seeing these guys bouncing off each other. Thank you two and thank you Yoystan for all of this.
IT COMES IN PINTS? I'M GOING TO GO GET ME ONE!
You are so lucky. This would be a dream for me
I don't know how you got through that interview without completely geeking out!!! I would have gone all fangirl & humiliated myself in the worst way! Great job!!! I've seen all 3 episodes of The Friendship Onion so far & I love it!! Pippin & Merry are my favorite characters in the books AND the movies. XO Thank you for doing this interview! 💜
Man! I would love to have a conversation with Dominic and Boyd! : )
Oh my days I can’t believe you managed to get this amazing interview
Super cool man, congrats my friend! Super proud!
Thanks Ridgy! Couldn't have done it without you guys! Got a BFME-related question in there for you guys ;)
@@MenoftheWest You're the best ❤
Yes
OH MY ERU
Lu Vitar bless you
I didn't have time for Asking Questions Mellon! 😓 This was my Chance and I missed it...
Wait a Mo, in the show they can Answer Questions too...That will be how I do it to "meet" them and ask Questions!
I will do that, I will so soon!!!
This is the coolest thing ever Yoystan!
Charlie is still working hard on that Drive Shaft comeback.
Couldn't they find them some hobbit-sized chairs? ;)
✨ Omg !! So happy for you congrats ! ✨💜💜
Sweet! My favorite hobbits!
The Howard Shore recordings deserve better modulation than they got. I have to automate the audio for radio, adjust the gain so the audience can HEAR it.
So fun! I really enjoyed this for my Monday morning. 🙏🏼
Can you get Liv, Cate or Hugo next for some Elvish thoughts these days?
They look taller, and like they had a hard day....Yoystan, well done this is amazing
Dom's sounding like Tom Waits
Ian McKellen said a few months ago after filming ended the cast said they'd meet every year for dinner somewhere but to this day they never have or been in the same room as each other since.
To be fair since almost all of them are still active actors the logistics of that are quite unfeasible since they would all be off filming different movies and shows constantly around the world.
I love how pure hearted and just absolutely delightful all the main fellowship actors really are in real life, especially the hobbits. Absolutely phenomenal people and I think some really interesting questions on your part.
I feel old now.
Congrats to all three of you! :) Thank you
Fantastic interview, this channel has come a long way
Oof can't believe u met these guys irl
Shoutout to everyone who was there for the AMA!
Well done, this was very nicely handled interview. Thank you!
Enjoy the Silmarillion chaps, it's mind blowing! :D
**Second Breakfast memes incoming**
If you picture in pictured during future interviews, it might help it be more immersive. But otherwise, this is great and thank you for the great interview.
Very nice interview. Have and always will be a LOTR fan.
Great to see Pippin and Merry back.
Excellent Interview, Thank You Very Much !!!!
Yessssssssssssssssss
This is awesome
Billy stumped Stephen Colbert with LOTR trivia last week! The interview was amazing, and the trivia contest was hysterical.
The first 2 minutes of this where they discuss thair first and second breakfast
Will provide more entertainment for lotr fans than amazons whole show
Yoystan! So calm and cool and professional - insightful questions asked during this excellent interview. Consummate, as always...
