I’ve been using the BikeTrax GPS tracker for a few months now and would recommend it to anyone who owns an ebike. The unit is small and easy enough to conceal and the battery will last a good few days in-between charge. The app allows you to track the bike whilst on the move and is accurate even in the most remote of areas. When armed, it is sensitive enough to recognise small movements and will send both an audible and visual alert to your phone. For a reasonable amount of money, this could be the difference between losing or getting your bike back should the worst happen!

After “what if” at about 0:53 sec, he says carbon, meaning carbon frame, and he is right. I have a similar unit, probably made by a different company, and it will not work IN an aluminum or steel frame- only ON one. However I added a carbon seat post and then it works fine.

Be careful I got this but only one problem . I got this theives found the tracker within 3 hours of it being stolen being connected to your battery they are easy to find , if you have a expensive e-bike they know it’s tracked and strip your bike. I lost a whyte rs160 .

Now this actually looks the business, with the only issue/restriction being the material of the bike itself. My bike is a 2021 alloy Trek Rail 5 Custom which could interfere with the quality and performance of the GPS signal.
What kind of testing has been done on this product in that regard? Not all of us can afford to run a carbon e-mtb rig and none of us can afford to see our pride and joy stolen.
First impressions though are very favourable and so is the price. This could even be use in conjunction with an Airtag and the Bosch security system which was employed on the 3rd gen Kiox remotes, which effectively locked the bike if the bike was stolen.

Your welcome, I have fitted quite a few of these, fitting location of the device is key, Carbon seems to block the reception like aluminium does too. the best place is up against the plastic motor housing cover

Guessing this works for e scooters aswell? anyone that has fitted this for a e-scooter before? Want to fit one to my Apollo Phantom but don't know if it can connect to it.

this looks great, and I guess the cost is reasonable (though noting there is an ongoing annual fee for the monitoring App to add on).
That aside, I cannot understand why the big bike and/or motor manufacturers have not simply done their own system linked into the likes of the Specialized Mastermind or Bosch smart system. A built-in integrated tracking device at the time of manufacture seems a no brainer to me.
At least the new Bosch smart system has an auto lock thing now (ie the bike won’t operate without your mobile phone, and I think an alarm system may be coming?). Not sure if the Specialized system does the same…anyone know???? But that is only the 1st layer of protection. Tracking is the ultimate protection and deterrent, and the industry really needs to tackle the bike theft issue head on given the amount of hard earned cash we are handing over to them.

why not to integrate smtg similar to Bosch/Shimano etc eBike app to be able to block battery board and motor to work as alternator and slow the peddling, it's quite expensive bikes and you should be able to protect from theft based on serial number and online registration

There is a brand new unit from bosch that will retrofit to the new bosch gen 4 smart motors, it wont be long before they will be part of the factory build but at the moment manufactures may see there could be a bit of additional revenue to be had before including it at build stage. I will be posting a video with the new unit very soon, keep an eye out for it.
What if bikebhas been sat for a good while and so the battery has ran out, then someone steals it? Maybe best of both worlds would be this with an airtag?

Love the video and this seems like one of the best options available. Would it work with a hub motor on the Specialized Globe Haul series of cargo bikes?
if there is a 12 volt aux output from the motor or controller it will work.

I’m having problems with the install of my BikeTrax unit within my Trek Rail Five. The app now won’t pick up or find the unit when scanned. Do you have any advice how to resolve this problem.

I bought one of these for my Merida e160 9000 2020 model with the E8000 motor unfortunately it did not fit in the side casing so I installed it in the seat post like you did on the yeti
I connected to the light ports on the motor as shown in the instructions but for some reason I can’t activate the lights so I can’t get power to charge the battery on the GPS unit
I took it to a local Shimano dealer to see if they could activate the lights but they had no joy and Shimano told them they couldn’t help so my question is can I tap in to my battery somehow to charge the GPS when I’m riding or charging my bike
I know this is an old video so maybe there is a better GPS tracker out now that doesn’t require the use of my light ports

Hi, You can not tap into the battery, the motor will sense this and show errors. The output voiltage on the aux light output can be turned off or on via the desktop etube software,. I cant understand why this cant be, done, did they check for any output voltage using a meter/
hmmm... it does look good to own one, but it also comes with an question if it fit with all kind of motors? i just looked at my Ebike motor for Crescent Elder 2022, and it doesn't have any way to insert the tracker to charge it and all that.

Hi Dave , I have 2 bikes, Egwie PRO and Egwie x20. I would like to put gps alarm tracker from biketrax but unity company doest know iff device can be attached to the motor of those particular model. Egwie has motors called Xiongda in the backwheel. Maybe you can suggest me how to proceed in my case? I think I need to take universal kit biketrax. Do you know if can be installed to the backwheel? Or I will able only to attach it to the battery, thx in advance
Hi, Thanks for watching and your comment. You need a 12volt output to power the unit. If your bikes dont have an aux 12v output then you cant fit one im afraid.
I have a fantic with a brose motor will the spec kit fit? And i run a magicshine front light off the battery also will it affect it? Cheers in advance

Hi dave just installed my tracker and unfortunately you can't run a tracker and a front light same plug ( 2 pin) the rest of the sockets are (3 pin)..
Thanks for your comments, it does depend on your motor outputs, check the manual, Bosch 4 can supply 12 volt as an accessory.
How did you install it on that ep8?
The same as you would on the E8000, use the power output

Hi Dave, hope all is well. Have you configured the power port 'on' for the bosch gen 4 motors? I have a Cube and no one seems to know how to configure to get the additional battery pack to charge. Cheers, Mark
Hi, thanks for watching and your comment. The additional battery pack charges automatically when your bike is switched on, or it can be configured via our diagnostic software to be always on.
Hi, just jumping on this comment. I fitted one and it won’t connect. Apparently it needs the charge port unlocking/configured. What’s involved in this? Sounds like another outgoing that they didn’t mention before hand.
Hi Dave, I have purchased one on the back of your review. I have an identical bike to in the video, Yeti 160e. I had to drop the motor down to wire in the unit. For the life of me though I can’t find where I can place the thing, can you help? I could pop up in the seat tube but you said signal was poor. I can’t fit in the plastic bash guard. Please help

Thanks fella. Unfortunately the plastic cover on this doesn’t have enough space. The motor sits up inside the frame. The other issue I’m now having is turning the light on. It just beeps when I select on the head unit. Am I doing something wrong or just a poor connection? Shimano EP8

I did i think i have fixed the issue now on some shimano motors you need to enable the light terminals that the tracker connects upto. Alot of digging through google and we found the solution.

I guess I could still use this device as it works without a e bike battery, but the question is how long.
Maybe a bigger but suitable size battery could be installed? Or does it need a battery connected to get a charge in the small battery?

Hi, the unit is powered by the ebike motor aux, 12v, it uses the some of the power to charge the smaller battery.
@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic That's what I suspected. any way toget it to work with an analog bike? A small battery that I can charge. that lasts long enough to go between service intervals.
@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic There is a Norwegian company called BIkeFinder, but the thing with it is the insurance only works if you have it installed in the handlebar, but on the handlebar it sticks out, literally and figuratively. But it's a rubber tube with battery and tracker, you slide it into the handle bar and secure the end which is a compression plug. With the super ''secure'' Torx screws.
As it's on a mountain bike I would smash the cover to bits. I won't have any plastic thing on the ends of my handlebar, I have proper alu bar end plugs.
The unit uses a Simcard.

they offer subscription with insurance. It's cheaper than an bike specific insurance for a bike from an insurance company. at least in Norway.

If the thief is not smart and has the tools to remove it then it works I guess.

@@mtbboy1993 bring the cable that should go to the battery of the e-bikemotor (which you don't have) to an external point. If the tracker gets low on power connect a powerbank to that cable to recharge the tracker.

A couple of questions, firstly how long does the back up battery last if some toe-rag removes the bike battery? Secondly, how hard is to get Yorkshire police (for example) to respond if you report a bike theft and give them its location?
My app states at the moment (with 25% charge) the backup battery will last for 5 days in standby mode, or 3 hours if the bike is being moved, and is switched off.
@@MarkSouthee Thanks Mark, that raises the next question. When its sitting in standby mode, is it still reporting its position at some interval? I suppose I should be checking their web site.
EDIT: just checked the manufacturer's site and it says:" It lasts another 14 hours if the e-bike is moved continuously and up to three more weeks on stand-by. "
So does that mean it *only* reports position when its moving?
@@Swaggerlot Yes it is. I had the bike turned off and alarm on, then moved the bike without turning the alarm off. Only moved the bike about a metre and the alarm went off.

Too expensive withing montly subscription, rather an apple airtag
But you have to reply on it coming in contact with iPhone users with Bluetooth turned on. It’s not a true tracker but better than nothing.

How well do they work on an aluminium frame?
Hi Pete, The unit will not work as well, as it needs to keep connected to the amount of satellites it requires to keep accurate positioning. inside plastic motor covers work best.

@@peteturner8493 Hi Pete, good comment, most ebikes will have a place to fit the unit where it will be able to receive enough satellite reception for it to be effective. Making it secure and difficult to access quickly whilst still been effective if the key. I will do a bit of research to find out how much info there is of install locations

The limitation of these is that once they're indoors, they can't update their location. It would be great if the new version coming up that supports 3/4/5G would also use WiFi to identify indoor locations using SSIDs of nearby networks. My bike got stolen and even with a Biketrax fitted, the police weren't able to do anything since the last location was outside a block of flats. It hasn't come back online in over a month, so I assume the thief has found and destroyed the unit. Either that or they're still looking for a charger and Bosch head unit etc to complete the bike and it'll come back online when the bike is charged. Not holding my breath though.
