My 102 is on my 5th wheel. That and a 4 pill running at 3/4 power and you get out pretty good. Since I farm it is nice to talk skip when I drive from farm to field. Lot's of great people on the air. Thanks for the George memories! I miss mine.
You're a madman, Mower Junkie! Back in the 80s before my brain was fully developed, I mounted a 102" fiberglass whip on the roof of my 1972 Duster. It looked like a damn remote control car! Kind of a pain with garages, parking ramps, tree branches, etc., but worth it. Connected to a double-rocked Cobra 148 GTL and a little Palomar TX-100, I talked everywhere!
Hey MJ, I'm next to the Columbia Met. Airport. I put a 102" whipon the roof of my '97 F250 but I used a large three magnet mount rather than drillong the roof. I did a radio check from my driveway and was answered by a guy in Sandy Run just as clean and clear as if we were on the phone. By far the best setup I have ever had. Really enjoy your content! Looks good! Back in the 90's I had a 102" whip mounted to the top of a roll bar on my 87 Dakota so the base of the antenna was even with the roof of the truck and it worked better than any mobile setup I ever had. The only trouble I had was hitting low branches and overpasses. McDonald's drive throughs were off limits too.
Best antenna ever on top of the perfect large metal roof of that vehicle. You can also run some pretty serious power into it as well. Try your ts-50s mobile on ssb, great radio for mobile and no drift. Hope to hear you soon. #15 in MS.

I ran one of these on my old Dodge Dakota on top of the ladder rack.It worked awesome .Just one suggestion loosen the ball a little and tilt the whip forward so when your driving itll bend straight .I did talk to you one time from my mobile with the 102 on it ,i think it was last year. 73's Take Care Love the hobby, keep up the videos. 514 Ontario Canada
The small screw on the end of the ballstud is for connecting the center conductor. That way you can put torque galore on the big nut and not have a terminal to worry about while doing so.
I know it, But I wanted a really good physical connection for the coax. that little screw was too small for My liking. Be good 625, I'll catch You on the air.

When I was a kid there was a guy who went by Razorback. He had a Corvair van with two 108" whips co-phased on the roof! He had issues with bridges, tunnels, overpasses...and trolley power wires! He had a 250 watt amp and I overheard him talking back to Arkansas many times.
Bet when you get on the road with that any your noise level in jeep goes up howling as the wind pass by I had old Ford van no headliner I did the same howled down the road Stay safe good radioing
102" whip on the roof I had no doubt that it would match well. I know everyone is an expert I'm not you did a great job on the mount only thing I would have done differently is exposed bare metal on the inside where the mounting nuts are and finish with paint. I found President base station, external speaker, at a yard sale for five bucks if you come across one it is worth buying it really cleaned up my the sound on my CB. It's big you can put it on the back seat.

I have seen similar setups, but it has been a very long time. Most people aren't that serious about 10 or 11 meters to go to such extremes to squeeze a little more DX.

Hey 151 back in the day I had a 102 whip on top of a light bar on a old ford courrier pickup driving I hit power lines sometimes but that barefoot relistic on key downs beat some that thought their box was bigger than my antenna lol 151 we know.
thats lovely (-: 73 nf442 / had a 102 inch whip on my old 86 mustang. using a ranger ar3500 100w model.. always very good dx reports... i had a piece of iron bent to bolt up behind the bumper and come out in the bottom and connect to the antenna... no holes in the bumper. they work very well.... im curious tho.. if you tried other whips in the spring.. like a couple of top loaded designs ect.. shorter whips.. what they would really compare like in the real world... show how well the big whip really does work as mobile.. (-:
That 102 on the roof is the best you can get.1 to 1 and max gain.I run the same system for years.just knock the ball off the whip so it can't snag in brush and drive throughs.And keep clear of lightning storms.i lost 2 radios over the years to static,did add a lightning arrester 4 inches from my ant,cured that.otherwise,can't beat the 102. 40 years experience.
Its a good thing if the base of the antenna grounds to the vehicle that is what you want it to do. You will just end up grounding it someplace else. You want your ground in the center of the vehicle. The antenna is up there pretty far. Watch out for trees and over passes. I would like to put and antenna on a roof some day. It should work great. My point is you could have just made the base mount out of any kind of metal aluminum or iron. Dont matter if it grounds out that is good. The 102 inch whip is the clear winner its a real quarter wave antenna. You can hear better on them too.
with this kind of mount, the ball can not touch any part of ground, it needs to be isolated. if it touches the body it will create a dead short. Take care, Thanks for watching.
The best antenna to buy is a Wilson 2000 trucker antenna you can set the SWRs better and its designed to take a beating its very hard to set the SWRs on a 102" wip and they don't work that good and the best CB radio to buy is a Galaxy 95T2.
There's 2 different measurements I use on coax lengths to achieve low swr on a setup like that , either 21 feet 6 inches Or 19 feet 6 and 3/4 inches .. I'd be interested to know what was your magic number ?
6' coax on the antenna, joined to a 12' coax with a barrel connector, then connected to the radio. I set it up this way so that I can attach an external swr meter.

Nice job. That's what happens with those cheap ball mounts, the plastic isn't worth a shit and cracks very easy. Been running ball mounts and 102 for a very long time
You can't beat the old 102" whip for mobile use. It's big and ugly but they play. Antenna's with loading coils are just not as efficient as a full length quarter wave whip.
You might want to get some fiberglass and resin it will hold up better than plexiglass. 108" is a lot of stress on the insulator. Not all balls will hold them on top of a vehicle. You might also seal the ball to the top.

There's a way around it...determine what your total height is and get a truckers map that tells you the height of every obstruction in your area.

Sadly, as far as I can tell...you can't get these 102" whips in the UK now. I used one 40 years ago. Cool video.
