@bruhmanofyear2 that's exactly what I meant when I said it's not fun to debate technicalities. TECHNICALLY the manga has canon priority, but honestly it's not something people should care too much about.
@bruhmanofyear2 he's referring to the manga when making the canon statement. People do this with every anime based on a manga. Canon to the anime really doesn't make since here
This is my favorite duel of the entire original Yu-Gi-Oh series. This duels is absurd, it's fun, it's ridiculous, but in all of the best ways, while also being very emotional, especially if you combine it with the duel that Joey does with Mai immediately after this.
Episode 169!!!! Man the amount effort TGS anime puts in his videos from trivia to lore to rule explaining not mentioning goin to the duel back to back to know every possible move and Evey card in hand it's just shows how much this man puts his heart into these kinds of videos
Same, the dragon fusions were clearly pure plot device, up to and including the one that defused and the one that failed. So as long as you sit back and enjoy each duel for what it was, it was a pretty fun watch. The same goes for season 3 really. The deckmaster system was also basically plot device city, letting the writers have free reign to do whatever they wanted during the filler arc.
For me this is definitely top ten of all time. Great passion and writing. One thing I love in the dub vs sub is when Joey summons Lord of the red the summoning is blue flame which in reality is many times hotter than orange plus I think it looks a lot cooler
To me, the armor cards are precursor to the Meklord Emperors Edit: Trap Hole of Spikes for the mystery brick card (all of Valon's monsters have 0 atk, so that trap's useless)
More like Timelords IMO: - 0 ATK - Negate damage - Can’t be destroyed in some cases - Inflict some type of damage while destroying/removing opponent monster(s).
This is straight up a TOP 10 Duel of the whole YGO franchise for me! The characters, the passion, the strategy, the unique fist fighting with armor! It's one of the awesomest duels ever!
I'd say the mystery card is probably roulette spider. It serves no purpose considering majoirty of the duel Valon has no monsters or monsters that could redirect an attack to something else also Joey faces a great risk using it Edit: correction a greater risk considering when he could use it he has little LP left because again Valon leaves his himself wide open most of the duel
@@chrisdonovan9872 My bet is Gilford the Lightning. I don't think he ever ended up with 3 monsters on the field or a way to discard a card from his hand. So it could 100% be dead in his hand all duel.

I think Valon might have actually used the effect of Psychic Armor Head, but just didn’t declare it. There was a point in the duel where, at the start of his turn, he just drew and played Black Hole Shield without looking at it.
its a shame (at least in the US) the video is removed from the channel so its easy to miss. i only saw it the first time a year or so ago. "Nah I just like being evil mate" is SO FUNNY Edit: The video is on youtube, LittleKuriboh hasn't added the 3rd party's upload to his playlist though. No need for a VPN 4Kids only gun for that man.
Sad thing is that all those punches Valon did ended up doing physical damage to Joey since monsters were made real during this arc. If Joey wasn't so exhausted and hurt, he could have possibly beaten Mai.
This is such a fitting duel for Joey, since Joey is so keen on throwing hands with anyone at anytime. My favorite example... Literally, Episode 1: Joey to Kaiba- "Ooo, im shaking! Why don't we settle this with fist's, instead of cards?!"
Funny because kaiba can actually do both Remember,he spent an entire season running away from strapped goons that wanted to kill him and though we only saw it once or twice,I'm pretty sure he actually throw hands at rare hunter and bullies that were breaking the rules, all over the city Now imagine that, playing a children card game in a back Allen, then some rich dude comes in,beat your oponent down to save you...and then be blasted with a "third rate dualista with a fourth rate deck"😂
You know…they kind of work like the Meklord Emperor pieces except being attached to the duelist. They are effectively one monster made up of 5 parts and can be customized to suit the situation either with upgraded parts or the parts from different Meklords.
The really cool thing about the Armor monsters is how well they synergize with the Seal of Orichalcos: the extra zones allowing Valon to equip more things, and the ATK boost helping to compensate for the Armor monsters' naturally low ATK
I'd like to recommend, even though it's a smaller duel, Syrus vs Hassleberry. Hassleberry could have ended it in a tie if he wanted, but also he played exactly how Syrus expected him to and thus into all his traps, so could he have avoided that altogether by playing differently? Plus I want that infinite loop acknowledged.
I’m surprised they didn’t say that Hermos creates Joey’s armor cards, instead of them just pretending that he’s always had them but just so happens to never have used them before or after this.
This is not only one of my favorite duels in Yu-Gi-Oh, but one of my favorite anime moments overall! It was THE ONE time I didn't get bored with the whole "fighting over the girl" thing and one of the few times I saw it being done correctly! They both genuinely cared for Mai and over the course of the duel learned to respect each other by understanding that, although each in their own way, they ultimately wanted the same thing...to protect her.
Honestly, if there is an official Yu-Gi-Oh vr game, I want there to be these armor cards that you can use to punch the fuck out of your opponent’s monsters.
1:05 well mate... That can be the whole Joey deck since our boy only fill his deck with bricks. The dude things he's Bob the contractors placing bricks all over the street
The reason why valon doesn't use the psychic helmet effect to draw armored monsters instead of drawing normally it's probably that he wanted the magic cards like full armored gravitation that can summon multiple monsters
They aren't technically Armor ability monsters. Aura Armor uses his Life Points so manifesting as equipped armor seems in theme. But Joey becoming Lord of the Red is random and probably just so animators could have him fist fight with Valon.
@@ScionStorm1 maybe he decided to update his deck a bit between seasons and he found the lord of red ritual and armor card randomly and not knowing what they can do thought it would be cool to use plus there is merit because battle city no gearfreird the master swordsman just the iron knight so it makes sense he enhances his own deck
Mistake in analysis at (10:18), I think. After Jinzo and Jet Gauntlet are destroyed, Joey can play monster reborn to re-summon Jinzo. I’m not sure about the exact rules in WTD, but Joey could: A: Attack Vallon again (Vallon could absorb the damage and lose the chest piece?) B: play monster Reborn facedown and activate it defensively on Valon’s turn. I definitely think Valon made a huge misplay, but I don’t know if it would have lost Joey the duel.
I think the best part about this duel is how Joey and Valon essentially “gg shake my had” gentlemen into activating a metaphorical “Last Turn” card. I genuinely think that’s what makes them so respectable. They agreed that something would be sick, so the said “fuck it. Our souls are on the line, but this would be pretty hype.” And then they did it.
Also, I would just like to say that Valon 100% CHEATED. Can’t attack on the first turn. However, this makes me think that it was another instance of “shake my hand,” since Joey realized “hey, that’s illegal.” *”but it is hype.”*
The concept of the armor monsters is really cool. I would love to see an entire series based around it tbh. Like the duel disk is a set of armor and the duelists fight using the power of their monsters. In terms of rules I imagine it'd be a nightmare, but the possibilities really makes me want to see what would happen.
And then the show turns him back into a joke losing his last duel in the series to lame ass Zigfried while still being called an amateur by Kaiba in the 2nd to last episode. Complete BS!!! 😡😡😡
@@michaelnally2841 Nowhere near good enough. The whole Zigfried arc was awful and Kaiba didn't need another storyline. It should have been a season about Joey and Mai. Getting the respect he deserves, defeating Kaiba, Joey and Mai resolving things and getting together. Instead we get this complete BULLSH*IT!!!
Props to you for actually doing this video. Valon's duels have always been those ones where I stopped paying attention to the actual duel happening and just watched it for the spectacle. When presented with the Armour cards and what their effects are, my brain just tunes out lol It's probably not that difficult to understand but I just cannot comprehend them So I just roll with it lol Valon's a good character but I was like "What is happening?" the entire time
I think there was a bit of mistranslating: it appears that the Armor Archetype is focused on the Battle Phase, thus their effects can only trigger on attacks. Since they share the effect of only one can attack per turn, not all the effects can activate. Boots, Guard, and Head can since they are not offense focused, but the Knuckles have to follow that clause.
The only explanation I can come up with for Valon's misplays is he wants to see Joey at his best. Like he wants this duel to end with both himself and Joey giving their all. If he had ended the duel when he had that misplay, while yes, it is for plot reasons, it could also be because Joey hasn't had much of a chance yet.
That was always my sentiment as well. He wasn't just dueling Joey.......He was testing him. He knew Mai had respect and feelings for him, and wanted to see why while also initially going into it to try to prove he was the better of the two. In the end, though, he didn't seem to begrudge Joey of his win! If anything, he seemed to start enjoying the duel, saw why Mai respected him and saw Joey as a worthy, if not equal opponent!
Armour monsters could be cool but not as their own sub type. Make them Pendulum monsters to reflect them being played in the S/T zone in the anime and being able to mass swarm the field. Finish by giving them some more viable effects beyond battle phase things and I think they could be really fun!
I think armor cards would, in effect, function both either as monsters or as infernoble knights as they do nowadays, being able to equip themselves to other armor cards to provide effects. In the most basic sense, they pretty much function like the meklord emeperor parts from the anime as well
Union Monsters similar to the XYZ. Most likely requiring contact fusion and having a similar spell/effect that the newer magnet warriors use to bring out their combined form.
I think that in order for the Armor monsters to work, they would need a field spell that allows the user to either treat Armor monsters as equip spells or to use the backrow as additional monster zones
@@bruhmanofyear2647 Yeah but valon also didn't know what Joey had in his hand, so if he used his get out of jail free card when he had another, more expendable option available to him, it may have backfired. He had a 50/50 and just ended up choosing wrong.
I’m gonna say that the mystery card in Joey’s starting hand is Knight of Dark Dragon. Would make sense because Joey wouldn’t be able to summon it during this duel.
The Armor Deck was so cool and my favorite anime cards, which surprised me to this day that they weren't brought into the real world through adaptation towards the modern duels. 😅
Looking back on these armor monsters.... they function as the foundation to what would later be the Mechlord Emperors and how they are a combination of 5 parts to form a full robot.

Canon to the anime really doesn't make since here
@david osakwe agreed
This duel was one of the hypest and one of the most rewatchable. Man I love waking the dragon
Same here
Same, the dragon fusions were clearly pure plot device, up to and including the one that defused and the one that failed. So as long as you sit back and enjoy each duel for what it was, it was a pretty fun watch. The same goes for season 3 really. The deckmaster system was also basically plot device city, letting the writers have free reign to do whatever they wanted during the filler arc.
Just rewatched this duel last night! This is, imo, one of Joey’s best duels, if not his best duel, in all of DMs.
Where can I watch it?
@@leonnegovetic8370 tubi
For me this is definitely top ten of all time. Great passion and writing. One thing I love in the dub vs sub is when Joey summons Lord of the red the summoning is blue flame which in reality is many times hotter than orange plus I think it looks a lot cooler
To me, the armor cards are precursor to the Meklord Emperors
Edit: Trap Hole of Spikes for the mystery brick card (all of Valon's monsters have 0 atk, so that trap's useless)
More like Timelords IMO:
- 0 ATK
- Negate damage
- Can’t be destroyed in some cases
- Inflict some type of damage while destroying/removing opponent monster(s).
Or both
This is straight up a TOP 10 Duel of the whole YGO franchise for me! The characters, the passion, the strategy, the unique fist fighting with armor! It's one of the awesomest duels ever!
I'd say the mystery card is probably roulette spider. It serves no purpose considering majoirty of the duel Valon has no monsters or monsters that could redirect an attack to something else also Joey faces a great risk using it
Edit: correction a greater risk considering when he could use it he has little LP left because again Valon leaves his himself wide open most of the duel
I like to thinks it's flame swordsman his ace not the best for level 5
@@chrisdonovan9872 My bet is Gilford the Lightning. I don't think he ever ended up with 3 monsters on the field or a way to discard a card from his hand. So it could 100% be dead in his hand all duel.
@@chrisdonovan9872 the issue is i think they changed him to a fusion monster in this season
@@LucianDevine gilford 100% makes sense as it is dead in hand and he has no way to make it any time soon and if he tried valon basically wins before he can
@Shadowfan115 just looked up and nope still was a normal monster when he summoned it as a spirit against darts at the end also besides some it thier as a background card as a proper fusion it was never a fusion in dm at least
I think Valon might have actually used the effect of Psychic Armor Head, but just didn’t declare it. There was a point in the duel where, at the start of his turn, he just drew and played Black Hole Shield without looking at it.
The abridged version of this duel was hilarious lol 😂
Gundam Rage!!!😂
@@caelalbridge3347 Lol
its a shame (at least in the US) the video is removed from the channel so its easy to miss. i only saw it the first time a year or so ago. "Nah I just like being evil mate" is SO FUNNY
Edit: The video is on youtube, LittleKuriboh hasn't added the 3rd party's upload to his playlist though. No need for a VPN 4Kids only gun for that man.
No harpies were harmed in the making of this duel
@@XXMatt0040XX Yeah that part was funny
Perfect thing to listen to while heading to work. Love this series!
I guess Pegasus took that as a personal challenge to say "Why not both?"
Joey and Tristan are the fighters. And he took swings at Bandit Keith for locking the gang in that cave.
Funny because kaiba can actually do both
Remember,he spent an entire season running away from strapped goons that wanted to kill him and though we only saw it once or twice,I'm pretty sure he actually throw hands at rare hunter and bullies that were breaking the rules, all over the city
Now imagine that, playing a children card game in a back Allen, then some rich dude comes in,beat your oponent down to save you...and then be blasted with a "third rate dualista with a fourth rate deck"😂
By far my favorite duel of the original series. It is just so ludicrous while being played completely straight. Beautiful
You know…they kind of work like the Meklord Emperor pieces except being attached to the duelist. They are effectively one monster made up of 5 parts and can be customized to suit the situation either with upgraded parts or the parts from different Meklords.
Oh man, I ever when the Meklords were he hot shit of sat the time. And I was so desperate to get all three Meklords.
@@misterOrca4 My first yugioh card pack had meklord emperor granel
Yes! Thank you so much, TGS!
This duel was so epic in this arc. It was my 3rd favorite Joey duels in DM
The really cool thing about the Armor monsters is how well they synergize with the Seal of Orichalcos: the extra zones allowing Valon to equip more things, and the ATK boost helping to compensate for the Armor monsters' naturally low ATK
The mysterious card that Joey has and never uses is the Trap Card Gamble.
One of the coolest fights of the arc, and the fact that it turned into a legitimate fist fight was even better.
One of my most favourite duels in the entire series.
20:38 This makes me think, If the cards are holograms how did this happen to valon's hair
With this duel and then earlier Malik's shenanigans, Joey's gotta have the body trauma of several lifetimes
Raphael: Valon, we need a plan of attack!
Valon: I have a plan, attack!
Finally you cover this duel, one of my favorite duels
Or a monster that you dislike
Its so fun when the duelists create an entirely new card, then write the text/ special ability of the card in the spur of the moment. 😆
This duel was really cool but I always found it weird. Joey just happened to have armor monsters in his deck that we never saw before.
As I suspected. Joey only wins because of luck and plot armor.
A third rate duelist with a 4th rate deck.
15:00 Didn't think they'd reference Missing the Activation Timing in the anime but here we are
The day duel monsters became a shounen anime kkkkk
Yeah man, I know, I'm joking, you don't need to overthink that
I love the idea that someone brings an armour deck to a tournament and brings a suit of armour and for each card equips a piece
10:42 What if joey activated Monster Reborn during Main Phase 2?
14:49
Luckily for Valon, when Valon's armor is destroyed, Valon takes no damage as he used Active Guard's effect
This duel was always one the most feverish and that’s saying something in this show
Mistake in analysis at (10:18), I think.
After Jinzo and Jet Gauntlet are destroyed, Joey can play monster reborn to re-summon Jinzo.
I’m not sure about the exact rules in WTD, but Joey could:
A: Attack Vallon again (Vallon could absorb the damage and lose the chest piece?)
B: play monster Reborn facedown and activate it defensively on Valon’s turn.
I definitely think Valon made a huge misplay, but I don’t know if it would have lost Joey the duel.
A(Valon could also redirect the attack to a different armour piece, like the shield, and cop some damage)
I would say the closest thing we got to the armor monsters was the meklord monsters in the anime as all five combined into one monster
Joey turning into Zato/Eddie from Guilty Gear just might be the best thing he ever did.
Idk why but whenever a card is never revealed, I just assume the duelist has a singular fake piece of exodia in their deck
Fun fact : the suits is actually homage from one of the games that Joey play during Death-T arc in Season 0 anime.
I just watched this episode not too long ago, and I'll admit, this is one for my absolute favorite duels, I'm so glad you reviewed it!
I think the best part about this duel is how Joey and Valon essentially “gg shake my had” gentlemen into activating a metaphorical “Last Turn” card.
I genuinely think that’s what makes them so respectable. They agreed that something would be sick, so the said “fuck it. Our souls are on the line, but this would be pretty hype.”
And then they did it.
Also, I would just like to say that Valon 100% CHEATED.
Can’t attack on the first turn.
However, this makes me think that it was another instance of “shake my hand,” since Joey realized “hey, that’s illegal.”
*”but it is hype.”*
The concept of the armor monsters is really cool. I would love to see an entire series based around it tbh. Like the duel disk is a set of armor and the duelists fight using the power of their monsters. In terms of rules I imagine it'd be a nightmare, but the possibilities really makes me want to see what would happen.
This was one of my favorite duels of all time. Thank you for covering it! :D
For someone whos philosophy is attack attack attack, Valon sure has a lot of protection and negation effects
I think out of all the main cast season 4 showcased how Joey evolved the most as a duelist.
And then the show turns him back into a joke losing his last duel in the series to lame ass Zigfried while still being called an amateur by Kaiba in the 2nd to last episode. Complete BS!!! 😡😡😡
And Joey never loses in the Orichalcos duel matches only except with Mai at the end due to his exhaustion.
@@equivalentexchangeisalie5726 kinda agree although in fairness he almost won and managed to make Zigfried ACTUALLY TRY.
@@equivalentexchangeisalie5726 yeah the only duels I genuinely liked from there were Yugi vs Leon, Kaiba vs Zigfried, and Joey vs Solomon Muto.
Props to you for actually doing this video.
Valon's duels have always been those ones where I stopped paying attention to the actual duel happening and just watched it for the spectacle. When presented with the Armour cards and what their effects are, my brain just tunes out lol It's probably not that difficult to understand but I just cannot comprehend them
So I just roll with it lol Valon's a good character but I was like "What is happening?" the entire time
Valon: "Joey just become the most bad-ass character in Yu-Gi-Oh!" 😆
Easily one of my favorite duels from the OG series. Great video as always.
Shenanigans the legendary dragons won’t exist with the seal. So when capon took it it would of killed it’s self.
Let's just say the mystery card in Joey's opening hand was "Paladin of Dark Dragon" and he never drew the Ritual Spell.
Or the other way round and say it was Dark Dragon Ritual and he never drew Paladin.
Joey having that armor card and Lord of the red lmao....... You never saw those cars again after this duel
I think armor cards would, in effect, function both either as monsters or as infernoble knights as they do nowadays, being able to equip themselves to other armor cards to provide effects.
In the most basic sense, they pretty much function like the meklord emeperor parts from the anime as well
or like union monsters
Union Monsters similar to the XYZ. Most likely requiring contact fusion and having a similar spell/effect that the newer magnet warriors use to bring out their combined form.
I think that in order for the Armor monsters to work, they would need a field spell that allows the user to either treat Armor monsters as equip spells or to use the backrow as additional monster zones
Can also have effects similar to the vision heros, but that would involve them having boosting effects for the armor monsters in the monster zones.
@@southernflight5078 That would be interesting
Now he better cover the Yusei vs the Meklords after this. That was one of my favorite duels in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5ds 🐲.
Considering how legendary this duel became it's a wonder they never came out with armour cards ...
So if Joey had used monster reborn on Psychic armor head, he likely would've won, and valon would've won if he'd attacked jinzo. Fair trade I guess
@@bruhmanofyear2647 Yeah but valon also didn't know what Joey had in his hand, so if he used his get out of jail free card when he had another, more expendable option available to him, it may have backfired. He had a 50/50 and just ended up choosing wrong.
I can't wait to bring my Armor Deck to a real Yu-Gi-Oh Tournament and legally punch my opponent in the face.
I’m gonna say that the mystery card in Joey’s starting hand is Knight of Dark Dragon. Would make sense because Joey wouldn’t be able to summon it during this duel.
Bro this was the most anime duel / episode in the entire story arc
The Armor Deck was so cool and my favorite anime cards, which surprised me to this day that they weren't brought into the real world through adaptation towards the modern duels. 😅
10:25
But if Valon had done this, Joey could have used Monster Reborn during main phase 2 and still been in the game =p
Looking back on these armor monsters.... they function as the foundation to what would later be the Mechlord Emperors and how they are a combination of 5 parts to form a full robot.
Throwing it out there again, Yuma vs Shark towards the end of Zexal (or all their duels). Some of my most rewatched duels, would love a breakdown
Ngl armour cards would just be my excuse to spark out some obnoxious players at locals.
6:15 Has Battle Warrior ever done damage or accomplished anything besides being a chump that sits in defence except in this one instance?
17:52 - "Valon moves into his battle phase and uses burning knuckle to attack directly"
20:38 - Hair transformation
12:52 - My planet needs me
8:15 - Saint Seyaaaa
14:30 - DED
I would love to get an armor deck. I’m surprised one hasn’t been made, or an anime protagonist has gotten one yet. It’s theme could be all about self reliance, and not have other monsters/people fight your battles. Feels kinda on brand with the show.
