Trumpeter Leroy Jones was playing in New Orleans back when Bourbon Street was lined with jazz clubs. The city has changed since then - Bourbon Street is a prime example - and Jones has evolved with it. From second lines with the Fairview Baptist Church Marching Band and the Hurricane Brass Band, club gigs with modern combos and tours with Harry Connick Jr., he's been a part of many jazz scenes.
Jazz Night In America takes in a set with Jones' sextet at the Dew Drop Social & Benevolent Jazz Hall in Mandeville, La., across the lake from New Orleans. We hear the story of the venue, a small wooden room which has hosted jazz performances for more than a century, and the stories of Jones, a well-loved presence in his hometown.

About twenty-five years ago during a trip to New Orleans, I asked my nephew, Billy Overton, who he would recommend I listen to since I, a reed man, was beginning to listen to jazz trumpeters. Billy directed me to listen to you, and I bought "Mo' Cream From The Crop". Thank you for that album and all the pleasure it has brought me. Ten years ago, while recovering from a toes to tongue paralysis due to a GBS attack, I bought a Conn 6B and have just about worn it out. I am going to post this comment here and elsewhere so that many might see it and follow your inspiring work. By the way, I will be 75 in July.
I've run out of words for Leroy Jones' brilliance on trumpet years ago. Now I just listen and learn lol
My wife and I saw Leroy and this group (along with Norbert Susemihl on second trumpet) at Preservation Hall in 2018 and it was incredible. "Weenie" Farrow was 85 by that time and still played wonderfully. Leroy has a beautiful voice as well!
I saw Leroy with my Mother and Husband yesterday at a concert in Moffat p, Scotland.
What a player and singer. Thanks for the video ... We can relive the concert along with listening to his CDs.
True Music, thank you all
Excellent trumpeting in the tradition of Clifford Brown.
Thanks for posting something so cool.
Phenomenal Performance!
video deserves a lot more views!
The first tune sounds almost identical to the melody of "Red River Valley", more than a contrafact would be.
It seems that the melody is of folk origin, perhaps of Gaelic origin. Lots of hymn tunes have colorful pasts. Even the Star Spangled Banner started out as a London gentlemen's club's drinking song.
To think I actually got to chill with this guy in the green room and talk about trumpet
This is REAL music,i.e. old time jazz. I hear alittle Red River Valley N When The Saints Go Marchin' In . I only like this "old" jazz , not the new "way-out" tunes. This is cool! Great guys! So, I didn't hear how you music greats R sharing the wealth with the poor in New Orleans? The people who love you need on-going help.Just tell us a little of your charity?
great job!

Hey, love the series. I have a question though. When is the next season?
Thanks! We're actually starting back up THIS THURSDAY!
