  • Virtual birding trip in Thailand to Phetchaburi Rice Fields, with me to see some breeding season rice field birds. Birding in Thailand rice fields is an experience that always provides many interesting bird sightings. The breeding season is a good time to see some species at their best, in their colourful breeding plumage including three species of weaver birds. I always visit Phetchaburi rice fields when I am leading birding tours in Thailand for its high concentration of birds and large number of species that can be seen in a short space of time. In this video of my birding adventures in Thailand I show birders species as varied as Bronze-winged Jacana, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Javan Pond Heron, Streaked Weaver, Asian Openbill, Lesser Whistling Duck, Zitting Cisticola and the incredible nests of Baya Weaver; just some of the birds in this virtual birding trip.

    The most extraordinary thing is how little the birds seem affected by people. What is the cultural take on consuming birds/eggs?

    • @BirdingwithNick
      @BirdingwithNick  3 роки тому

      There is very little hunting of wild birds in Thailand. In the past persecution would have been more but these days the affluence of Thailand is such that killing birds for food is not something many people do. Fishing is very widespread but eating birds is not. Yes, there are still people who are not wealthy and a few probably hunt birds but it really is not widespread at all and the amount of time it would take to find eggs to eat can be used doing something far more productive. There is also the cultural aspect of Buddhism that means that most people do not want to kill things if not needed. That doesn't mean that all Thais are perfect Buddhists, they certainly are not, but there is that deep-seated belief that respect for life means all life and when you see birds being killed by youngsters for fun in other Southeast Asian countries you can see there is a real difference in Thailand. Rice field birds do get trapped and killed by farmers who put up mist nets to stop their rice crop being eaten or fish pond keepers who put up nets/hooks to protect their fish. Fortunately even this is not universal although I run into it all too often. Habitat destruction by development/conversion to shrimp farms is a far bigger menace to birds in Thailand than hunting.

      Thanks for those kind comments. I filmed the footage ages ago before I knew what I was doing but put quite a bit of thought into the editing to try and make it an improvement on previous videos so it is nice to know someone appreciates that effort. Indeed, the Openbill is one of those prehistoric birds.
