One of his first clients was Ted Bundy-a vicious, serial killer who murdered scores of women in at least a half-dozen states. More recently, he represented Robert Bales, a former U.S. Army sergeant who is now serving a life prison sentence for the murder of 16 Afghani civilians. These were, to say the least, extremely difficult cases for a defense attorney to take on. But no matter how vilified his clients, Browne could always be counted on to give prosecutors a rough time. As one prosecutor once observed: Browne in the courtroom is like “a pit bull on crack.” In November, Browne spoke with California Lawyer contributing editor Martin Lasden. I'm not certain why a couple of you are calling him a scumbag. Why? I haven't heard anything to suggest that he's not a decent person. If it's because of his clients, every criminal defendant is guaranteed counsel through all stages of a trial, regardless of the crime(s). He appears to be very ethical, and he's dong a job that few would want to do.
One thing that bothered me was the inconsistency of his beliefs regarding lawyer/client privilege. He said it doesn't apply if you know your client is a danger to the public. He said he knew if Bundy was free he would definitely kill someone, but even though he knew Bundy most likely would be released from jail in Florida, he only thought of maybe alerting the media because he would be kept anonymous.
He just got done saying a situation like that doesn't violate lawyer/client privilege & he knew how dangerous Bundy was, but seemed to have no interest in doing the right thing. I am the last person to demean someone just because they represent horrible people because due process, right to a fair trial & innocent until proven guilty are essential in a free society, but this man seems a bit narcissistic.

I don't see how anyone ought to deserve respect for hiding clear evidence of extreme crimes and harking on small technical errors of prosecutors for the sake of acquitting criminals, perhaps even so that they, in their freedom, pose a further danger to soceity. Our system is theoretical and practically obscene.
He is doing what must be done in our legal system - his level of excellence forces the prosecution to do their job, to the highest level of performance possible. Like it or not, those prosecuting citizens need to be held to a high standard of proof. The alternative is a “kangaroo court”, where any of us could be unjustly persecuted

I bet the reason Ted Bundy liked this lawyer and considered him a friend is because he saw himself in him. He probably thought if he hadn't went down the path he did that he would've been a lawyer. So in a way this guy was probably a role model for Ted.

If anyone cares, the un-name lawyer Bundy had that became a judge later was Bruce Lubeck who sits on the bench today in Utah. Lubeck said something in a Netflix docu that i thought really summed up ted, "Ted had too many wires crossed, he was born with the safety off.". How true
the fact that he was able to get bundy the option of serving life without the death penalty is a remarkable feat...& i respect anyone who's had a loved one taken from them by a murderer yet still stands by the principle that taking any life is wrong.
That offer is very often on the table bc capital cases are long & extremely expensive. They are exceptionally hard on victim’s families because of the lengthy appeals. When an accused is willing to plead, that eliminates the appeals process. The convicted murderer disappears forever and the families don’t have to return to court time & time again.
Non-lawyers don’t realize that most cases are resolved through pleas. If every case went to trial the Courts would come to a stop.
The scary part is that conservatives want to eliminate the appeals, which we MUST have if we are to have capital punishment. They say that the prospect of executing innocent people is acceptable! I hear voters say the same thing! I agree with Browne that our children (and their children) will live in America with fewer and fewer rights. It’s not a good thing for Americans that the Supreme Court & the federal courts are dominated by conservatives.
@@ailleananaithnid2566there wasn't any real hard evidence that Bundy did it, the Odontology has since been regarded as quackery in science.... and the prosecutors witness wasn't strong.... Bundy's problem was that he had to stick his foot in the middle of it. The state new their case was weak. The closing put forward in Bundy's case is one any good lawyer should listen to.
The problem really was Bundy trying to self-glorify himself in court, and getting his kicks out of it.
Putting your client on the stand is about one of the worst things that any lawyer could do, and Bundy'ss case is indicative of why.

@@LimeGreenGreenLimeLimeGreen he had worked a plea bargain out with the prosecutors. Bundy at first accepted it, but at the the hearing, he publicly turned it down and decided to go to trial. His confidence and arrogance ultimately led to his downfall.

He's the definition of professionalism. I believe even Ted Bundy deserved a professional hearing him out and vouching for him in court.
He made a deal for Bundy and could have saved him from the death penalty but Bundy being the narcissist he is turned it down.

John Kelly I’ve been binge watching his confession tapes on Netflix, his trials and several interviews he’s done, the part where he denied the plea deal was really something... his lawyer thought he had a death wish. Aside from Ted’s arrogant narcissism, do you think he refused it, maybe because Bundy truly believed he would be found innocent, possibly thinking he’d fool the jury like how he fooled countless others?

How do you find Alford pleas intellectually troublesome? Trials and certainly plea deals aren't about guilt or innocence. They are a negotiation between an individual and The State. Shouldn't you find plea bargains far more troublesome?
Weirdest comment was Ted Bundy telling his attorney Mr. Brown I believe 3 year difference that they were alike. Ted took the voices in his head acted on them. Attorney Brown heard the same voices but pushed those thoughts aside, admitting he came close to spiking a drink, and him repelling timid kindly women. Under certain circumstances anyone may tip the scale in one way or the other. What tipped Ted Bundy completely over the other end of evil is still 100% unknown. Attorney Brown conclusion that Bundy was possessed is probably correct, oddly he also stated that he personally did not have a spiritual belief. He started this journal which I believe he was trying to discover or piece together pieces to a very odd story his life and how he got connected to Ted.
Last point his girlfriend Debbie being killed and Attorney Brown not being able to try to even think it’s plausible that Bundy might have had a hand in that matter. Additionally, Ted chose Attorney Brown knowing this fact that Debbie was his girlfriend and killed. Just a totally ODD coincidence.
Or maybe Browne killed his girlfriend and Bundy knew it and that is why he said they are similar.

Wow! He was a public defender. Everyone no matter who they are or what thet have done is entitled to have legal representation. This is a basic right in any civilised country as it is in the USA. It takes a lot of strength and belief in the legal system and justice to be able to be a public defender. So scumbag...really??

Why don't lawyers have to abide by the same laws as Citizens? If you know somebody is going to do a crime or somebody who committed a crime a serious crime and you don't call and tell the police you can or will be charged with with some type of try you will be taken to jail if you know about a murder or a bank robbery you will go to jail so how does this guy and what he's talking about other lawyers not saying anything when they know why are they not arrested?
Attorney client privilege
Because attorney/client privilege is paramount in the profession. Just like anyone in the medical profession cannot discuss someone's medical history with just anyone. It is a basic code of the profession and is in addition to obligations to be a law abiding citizen. He was in fact figuring out a way to let this be known anonymously the next day, but didn't have to in the end because the police realized who they were holding.

Wow, unsolved cases always bother me. I always feel terrible for the victim, not ever being able to be brought to justice. Just terrible.. I really hope Ted weren’t involved, but as sick as he was, I wouldn’t put it past him. Would just be fucked up to be working with someone, trying to regain their freedom, only for someone you love to have fell victim to their hands. Crazy.

Like it or not, men like this is why the broken justice system works even as well as it does, especially by comparison to countries where you are legally guilty upon accusation and then must prove your innocence. Many many people in countries like that are falsely imprisoned and many times killed for nothing. I would rather have 10 criminals running free than to have even 1 single person falsely imprisoned. If even one person is falsely imprisoned, then the entire justice system is flawed. So we have about as good system as is possible currently, and it's still broken. Ego and pride ruin justice even more than bad representation does.

Prosecutors couldn't care less if a person is innocent or not. All that matters to them is getting another notch on their belts. Never trust them or law enforcement. They're all on the same team and they will destroy you if you let them.

I don't think that attorney Brown has the charm and Charisma that Ted Bundy owned. Ted had a magnet and people actually liked him. He was also very attractive. I don't see so much with this attorney. I think attorney Brown is a good criminal defense attorney but there's a lot of moral issues when it comes to being an attorney. And I think it will be between you and God.

atty browne is incorrect, as humans tend to be from time to time. ted was apprehended in pensacola, florida, in a stolen car at about 2am after driving out from behind a well-known eatery that had been closed for hours. it's a small town, especially back then, and officer david lee found his activity to be suspicious so he ran the tag and it came back as stolen. my neighbor is good friends with the arresting officer. ted was never in any type of custody ever in lake city, florida.

Ok, it works like this, and it's the same code used in regards to therapists, counselors, psychiatrists and their patients, an attorney is obligated to release information ONLY if others (including the client) are in danger. There is no ethical question to that. I don't like the phrasing "ratting him out" btw because that's not how it works, it makes it sound whimsical.
Other than that i think he did quite well in his profession. But he erred in not at the very least told them to keep him longer than a day as a "person of interest". And that's the softest way of putting it. Ted called him already in custody, alerting the police as to who he is would not get him in trouble with the Bar association.
