@@AuthorativeMrM It's fun to think back at that time. I heard that Metroid Prime 3 was made with motion controls, so I skipped it. I still haven't played it even though I've softened my stance on motion controls, especially for aiming. I'm playing through Metroid Prime Remastered right now and I'm probably going to play Echoes and Prime 3 after. So we'll see how it goes.

Gotta say, Samus from the Prime trilogy reminds me almost of a more sane version of the Doomguy than anything else. Yeah I agree, other M is a massive misstep in characterization.
It's easy to imagine Samus being a lot like Ripley from the Alien movies (which is pretty appropriate, obviously). And Ripley was basically 'Doomguy' in Aliens, so your comparison is pretty spot-on!
Samus doesn't coldly kill Rundas. He is shown reaching out to her when he is knocked down after the fight. He is then killed by Dark Samus using his ice power against him. The cut scene play his death as shocking, and we see Samus react in surprise to her friends death. We understand Samus is meant to be a caring person, not something like Boba Fett from Star Wars, that why Nintendo would let Retro Studios add Bounty hunting features to Prime 3, because she doesn't care about money.
That's what I like about Samus. The bounty comes second to doing what is right. It's not that she doesn't care about the death of the innocent or has a cold heart, rather she is unwavering in her missions despite the compassion she has for her allies.
As per usual, amazing review! Ps - we haven’t forgotten about putting out that video with the clip/question. Just trying to get caught up on all our crap before we jump back into making content.
Excellent vid Mr. M 👏 so well done! I'll play that Other M copy sooner or later lol The Metroid franchise is thriving once again. Hopefully, they learned from their past mistakes.
Hot take: relatability is a poor thing to focus on when making a great character and is a granish. Not essential, but can be great. Focussing on it is like focussing on the whipcream cream of a cake.
I've never played Other M, but this seems to be an example of mediocre being worse than bad. Bad can be sort of enjoyed ironically, but mediocre is just kinda meh.
As you know, I know zippo about video games….what I DO know is excellence in production, commentary, product knowledge and passion. You have that…in spades. Well done.
My younger brother bought Metroid OM for my birthday years ago, and I was excited to play it. Everything I had seen told me this was going to be an amazing Metroid entry, even if the control scheme was a bit awkward. Well, I did finish it. And I've never been able to go back to it. I don't hate the game. I can't bring myself to sell it. I keep telling myself I'll play it again someday. But it sits on my shelf almost in forever timeout. If it wants to take Samus and make such a whiny little girl out of her, then maybe it needs that timeout. I have replayed several other games in the series, and continue to love them. Other M is just too weird.
I feel the same way, Shadow. Other than the story, I didn't hate playing it the first time. I'd heard nothing but terrible things about it, so it was actually a bit better than I was expecting. But I replayed a bit of it to capture some footage for this video and I struggled to stay interested, so I don't know if I'll ever get around to completely playing through it again. But it's not bad enough to get rid of, so...
Feds in Prime 3: "Were just Allies that viewed Samus as a friendly neighborhood bounty hunter and a great role model that would help out if really needed." Feds in Other M: "Cliche Government with a facist agenda that makes Samus doubt them." I very much wish they kept the feds portrayed in Prime 3 and stayed consistent with it.
@@AuthorativeMrM one issue I have with prime 3 and the game Metroid prime hunters is there's multiple hunters that had potential to be amazing characters yet they were wasted. (rundas Ghor Gandrayda trace weavl janden noxus and spire) they deserved better tbh. the prime 3 hunters Coulda been fantastic companions and the prime hunters Coulda made an amazing rogue gallery. at least sylux somewhat has potential
Great video Mr. M! I think that the gameplay is not the one that brings down Other M, the portrayal of Samus in the game... That´s what turn off people. The only Metroid that I played from start to finish is Fusion, but have seen gameplay of the NES and SNES ones, in there Samus is a badass, shooting first, never asking questions. In Other M it´s infuriating how they put the character in such an submissive state. That looks like a alternative universe Samus Aran, one that she´s a wimp. Way to go Mr. M, getting close to the 1k subscribers! Almost there!
I agree, Saito! They put the story ahead of the rest of the game, and the story (and characterization of Samus) is ultimately what ruins the game. Without the story, it's a pretty decent game. The gameplay and controls are a little lacking compared to other Metroid games, but I don't think there's anything there that can't be adjusted to.
I saw someone before justifying Samus' character here as actually having character, and some even argued that it was a case of bad translation, except...these aren't just the things that should be taken into account. It's frustrating for an average Metroid fan since, even if one justifies that Samus isn't as popular to the Japanese audience, there are characters just like her that were made by Japanese and were better received. Her story of being submissive and being more demured (although wearing a rather provocatively skintight undersuit) as well as Adam's character, does not make sense when in the same game, they have created a character that can stand besides Samus' rebellious streak. Anthony Higgs gives meaning to Samus and her military background and dynamics, he doesn't condescend towards her, nor does he hold her down, yet you can almost see that nearly brother-like seniority he has towards her. Somehow if he was the one who had really died making a sacrifice play, it would have been way more meaningful for Samus to name her new AI in fusion after Higgs. Its story is inconsistent towards the rest of the series, and this again refers to Samus' character. While she was a silent and stoic protagonist, she's always the one giving context to what is happening and makes calculated guesses on what should be done, it isn't a perfect decision making, but it effectively gives her enough personality. This is built up upon the Prime games, and the Metroid II remake even added a new fight against Ridley, proving even more just how out of character her freaking out about Ridley. The fact that just prior to Other M, she had killed the actual Ridley, and even faced him many times before that. Also Team Ninja's handling is nearly insulting with the way they show Samus' ballistics, I mean, it's not like Samus didn't show skin prior to this, but the 100% completion runs work, because it was done in a tasteful manner. Seeing casual outfit Samus in Fusion and Super felt badass, while Team Ninja's camera work felt creepy.
You haven't played Super Metroid yet? That's honestly surprising to me, but I'm definitely curious to find out how you think it compares to Fusion, since you don't have any nostalgia blinders for the SNES game.
Yeah, def agree with you in regards to Other-M should'a been an origins story, I was thinking the same before you said it yourself. Could it be "creator" envy for Sakamoto that the character is viewed in a way he doesn't like? Just a weird way to try and change a character's personality mid-series; I can def see how they can piss people off. I enjoyed the review, Mr.M. Keep up the amazing content, bud.
I've thought a lot about this, actually. I think there might be a bit of resentment towards the Prime games and maybe some sour grapes about how popular the Metroid series is in America versus Japan. Sakamoto might have actually secretly intended for Other M to be the 'Anti-Metroid Prime,' so he made it different in every way possible. I didn't really get into this in the video, but I actually enjoyed some parts of Other M very much. I would definitely be interested in playing another Metroid game in this style, as long as the story wasn't pushed so much into the foreground.
Agreed. And if it was an origin story, they could have went wild with it, and I feel fans would have been more open to the idea. A side story about Samus' time in the Federation army with multiple characters and plotlines sounds kind of cool.
Excellent work on this my friend! We’ve talked about Metroid an absurd amount the past few weeks so you already know my thoughts on Other M, but I do look forward to giving it a full playthrough in the not so distant future. I honestly don’t think Metroid’s better now because a Western studio’s handling. I think it’s better because the studio understands (well, at least with Dread) exactly what longtime fans want out of the series. I could still very much see Western studios repeating Other M’s mistakes, but Mercury Steam has a bunch of Metroid fans that grew up and understand the series. Anyways, awesome job on this video man. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
@12:08 At first, I hated that line from Rundas. But then, I think that line is the perfect way to show he thinks like a Bounty Hunter. Why ? Because the part "all that stuff" is like a meaning way to say whatever about those moral codes. In a way, it's like he doesn't care about what other thinks about justice . He only believe on his own morals and justice, not from the other.
Hello! Excellent video! You describe Samus Aran so accurately. I've only played a little of metroid and finished super metroid, which it's a master piece in the saga imo. I laughed at the baby metroid part 😄. Nintendo should give a higher position to this game, I think. 1K!! Congrats MrM! 👏🏼
MrMatthews! You did such a great job covering this title! I still remember when it first dropped! My friends were big fans of Team Ninja and their Ninja Gaiden titles and they did not negatively affect their opinion of Metroid: Other M. I heard from these same friends, however, that the controls did indeed feel wonky. Sure, Other M seemingly has its flaws, but it doesn't appear all that bad. I think I'll give it a go. By the way: I recently picked up three Metroid titles, and am excited to give them a go. I'm sure I will play through Other M somewhere in between :) As always, terrific editing, and research on this one!
Thanks Omega! Even though I kind of tore it apart here, I still think Other M is worth playing. It has quite a few interesting ideas that I would like to see the Metroid series use in future games
Don't you follow DYKG? It wasn't just someone at Nintendo offering their perspective. it was Nintendo not letting Retro Studios move forward with an idea they had, it was the company themselves, because Nintendo is very protective of Samus as a character. Sure Mercury Steam is a Western developer, but even they weren't able to have full control over Metroid, that much is evident when research Samus Returns, they were just the ones designing the maps and gameplay. Dread had Fumi Hayashi as one of the games directors. He's a director at Nintendo who is bilingual. Him being on the team might have been to make sure both parties were doing what Nintendo wanted. And it is pretty clear from a quick look online that Sakamoto is the head writer of Dread.
I think one of the reasons Sakamoto wanted to expand on Samus as a character was because of the misconceptions surrounding her, some of which are displayed in this video. Retro themselves initially believed her to be a Boba Fett type, just with a moral compass, but Nintendo explained she's nothing like that, and how she's supposed to be a kind and even motherly chatacter. There's even a manga that was tragically never released outside of Japan that explores her origins and showcases these traits. Turns out they also didn't exactly understand what a bounty hunter is, so that title is a bit of a misnomer for her. Regarding Prime 3 superficially, some of the traits she's supposed to have were actually implemented in that game, including how she *does* mourn the loss of the other bounty hunters. She's seen slumping over and forming a fist at one point that she was forced to kill one of them because of Dark Samus' influence, and the 100% ending shows her reminiscing over them. Of course, Sakamoto went way too far in Other M with her excessive melodramatic monologues, and he ended up contradicting his own writing in Super and Fusion. Samus being obsessed over the baby Metroid makes no sense, given how quickly she gave it to the Federation scientists and how readily she takes orders from Adam. And then, of course, there's the infamous Ridley scene, which was one of the worst instances of character assassination ever written. There's no reason for her to fear Ridley at that point in the timeline, given how many times she'd faced him without hesitation in prior games. I know he killed her parents when she was a child and attempted to kill her, but it's completely out of character in context of the chronology. Thankfully, Sakamoto seems to have taken the criticism to heart, given how he said in an interview about Dread how he and Mercury Steam wanted to focus on her body language rather than her speaking, and you can tell she's been appropriately hardened by all the shit she's been through. She's still the same character, but her actions and mannerisms line up with the chronology as opposed to her behaving more akin to how she was in the manga when she was young and vulnerable. Anyway, yeah. Other M is a pretty weak entry in the franchise. I and many others have said the same thing you did about how it should have been a prequel during her time in the Federation army. At this point, I think most fans can agree it's best forgotten.
Quick question for you if Nintendo decided to make a Metroid movie how would you want it to look like a animated film or a live action film I say that because it looks like illuminated is going to be taking full control over Nintendo and I don’t want to see them make a Metroid movie. Me personally I would want Nintendo to be smart and make a live action Metroid movie and hiring a actress that actually looks like the character Samus and I would either want it to be a origin story or its own thing and not related to the actual games.
If they made a Metroid movie, I think they should DEFINITELY make it a live-action film. I’ve seen a couple of fan-made shorts films here on UA-cam that prove how well it could work in the right hands. It would be hard to find an actress that would satisfy everyone, but if they could bring back a younger Charlize Theron from earlier in her career, I think she would be perfect.
really enjoyed the video, but there’s a bit of revisionist history going on here. prime 3 didn’t get a lukewarm reception, it was received really well at the time across the board with both fans and critics (90% on metacritic) and upon announcement i don’t remember anybody being upset that retro weren’t making other m- everybody seemed incredibly hyped about the game and the team ninja involvement was actually a big part of that. it wasn’t until after the game released and fans got a hold of it when the hate really set in.
Prime 3 was pretty good even though it was the worst of the Prime series. It had a great finale with Dark Samus. Other M has no redeeming factors. It DESTROYED Samus as a character. It ruined the lore, the story, failed as a game, bad controls, terrible dodge mechanic, terrible antagonist, terrible Ridley. It’s just BAD.
The Prime trilogy fit between Metroid (NES) and Metroid II (GameBoy). Never played Other M but from this video it seems very non-canon. Also, if this was intended more so for the Japanese market, it speaks VOLUMES about how that market prefer to perceive women.
Thanks, Ian! Not that I doubt you, but do you happen to remember where you heard this? I've always been curious if Nintendo had officially confirmed where the Prime trilogy fit in the timeline. (I kind of got the impression that Sakamoto himself considered the Prime trilogy to be non-canon, but I could be just projecting a bit, lol)
I never played Other M but I’ve realized I like traditional style and am only meh on Prime. I realized this, of course, after buying Prime… again, when I didn’t vibe with it originally just because of the decades of hype I’d heard. I’m let down again sadly even with proper controls now. But I don’t know much about Other M so I’m interested in your take. I wish they’d port it to Switch so I could try it. Glad to see you post!
Very well done as always. Sounds like if they ditched the motion stuff and remapped it to a game pad, I could look past all the quirky Japanese unneeded stuff. Team Ninja gonna Team ninja after all..
I still think it's worth experiencing. If nothing else, it shows that a 3D 3rd-person Metroid game is possible, and it does that part pretty well. Unfortunately, I just don't see Nintendo ever acknowledging this game again, so I'd be surprised if they ported it to any future consoles 😒
In Other M the 2.5D is amazing and after you master the combat it is almost the easiest Metroid game out there with great combos... Unfortunately the controls aren't good enough to make use of it and the game is short, Eye spy is just way too dark and inorganic, and story is horrible.
I loved Other M. The lame story bits were there, sure, but the gameplay was very fun, and I had not seen graphics that good on Wii before to, which was nice to see. UNque boss battles too. As far as the lame unlocing ability system, sure lame, but not all that different form other games just not having g the ability and finding an unlock. it was a lame story bit letting her unlock stuff, but set that aside it is kind of like finding an unlock. Not shooting dors open bothered me a bit thugh ^^ But overall the level designs and combat and exploration was great. not perfect, mnissing stuff like getting drops for kiling stuff and finding missile tanks etc. Still I haf a great time and loved it.
nice vid. i think i'll be okay never playing this one... i feel like i should mention the manga. if other M could have been better if it was more faithful to the manga. but i dont know if that came before other M
I find it interesting that your biggest complaint is the story. I aghree too, lame story etc all your points good, but I was able to set al that aside and I did enjoy the gameplay alot. most important to me, the gameplay, I can set aside lame story bits. And when u compare the amount of hours playing the game, vs the maybe 1 hour or less of lame story bits, for me it was a wash. A fuin time overall.
The story is honestly the only thing I actively disliked about the game. The control scheme was awkward and frustrating at times, but definitely not in a game-breaking way. The story was pushed so far into the forefront and I disliked so much of it that it brought the whole experience down. As for the actual game itself, I liked it for the most part. It pretty much played exactly like you’d hope a 3rd-person 3D Metroid game would play and I’d definitely like to play another Metroid game in this style. My only real complaint about the gameplay is the lack of exploration and item-discovery, which is what made Other M less satisfying (to me) than almost all of the other games. Thanks for the comments, btw. It’s interesting to hear the other perspective👍
Great review. Definitely the most tone deaf game in the series. You know the next entry is in trouble when the director says they want to appeal to everyone. 12:26 Correction! There is a cutscene that shows that she’s sad for killing them, but it doesn’t show up until you’ve beaten the game and gotten at least 75% of the items. And yes, it’s still lame.
Good to know! I've only beaten MP3 once when it originally came out. I've restarted it two or three times since then with the intention of exploring the game more, but I just lose interest every time.
It only becomes controversial when you are a feminist and concentrate too much on the story which was never the strongest point about any Metroid game. Other then that Team Ninja established a great way to ninja-fy the Metroid franchise, bringing along some nice gameplay mechanics that helped to deviate it from other games in the series.
I personally think you’re wrong. I feel players really don’t know who samus is and the outrage over other m illustrates that. Why can’t someone be sensitive and badass at the same time? Yes they mishandled her a bit but I totally think the Samus we see there could absolutely be the same Samus in Dread. Perhaps that was just one point in time where she was sentimental and vulnerable? Which the game clearly states this is the case. People change and grow and this is a process that is usually non-linear other m doesn’t contradict or erase Samus’ actions in other games. In life people often go back to old patterns and ways of being when questioning their own identity. It’s not too far fetched to see her act that way.
She is so much more than just a cold killer like doom guy. Everything in her backstory and what she has gone through in the games suggest this. In fusion she no longer felt much for “the baby” but in other m she was in the stage of processing those feelings plus her trauma with Ridley after “finally” destroying him.
Because she's not badass in Other M. She's only sensitive, wishywashy, and simpering. And don't you dare tell us, Metroid fans who have played all the games, that we don't know the character. Piss off a bridge with that.
I can't really disagree with much of what you said but I will ask... When/where was it said that Nintendo wanted to replace Retro Studios with Team Ninja? I think maybe there's a misunderstanding on your part because from what I remember it was just that they wanted to make a more actionized Metroid game, and that's what led to Other M being the way it was. I don't think Nintendo wanted to replace Retro but they wanted to do something different. (Or maybe that was Sakamoto? Can't distinctly remember that) Also, while I think Other M is fine and honestly for the 5 dollars I got it for I have fun playing it every once in a while but uh... hot take that "it's fine" and "still a Metroid game". Look, I'm not here to attack anyone and Other M isn't a bad game by no stretch of the word (Mediocre at worst) but a really bad Metroid game. I do agree with what you said about the game looking AMAZING though, and a few other things like the controls being a tad awkward at times, and to be fair the chick thhey got to do Samus in Other M is pretty wholesome as she did a video iirc for a fan celebration for one of Metroid's anniversaries and wished Metroid a happy birthday. Like she might have been directed wrong in Other M but I definitely think she became a fan cuz of Other M. Hell, I've heard people having liked Other M a ton (even if I don't agree with them defending some of the bad decisions) and became fans and played the other games. There's also the fact that the game got a horrid translation that made it feel even stiffer along with the spoken dialogue. I think with a better translation it could be better but nothing can truly fix it's problems outside a whole on remake. Anyway sorry for ranting just a tad, thanks for the video I really enjoyed it! Seeing Metroid content is always a plus in my book!
Badass bounty hunter that faced ridley a couple of times *already* Suddenly buckles and remakes samus's personality into something she just does not fit as... To the point I wish it was non canon.
If this had been a full prequel to the entire series and this was the very first time she had faced Ridley, that would have been fine. But they tried to put an "origin story" plot in the middle of the series, for some reason.
@@AuthorativeMrM indeed, hell the reason I dislike other m in particular is cuz of the pdst scene. Its the version of as you said "origin story" like samus just meet ridley for the first time since he genocided her planet and made her an orphan (something manga does better) when that isnt the fact and this is with the assumption of the prime trilogy+federation force being non canon. Samus should have a not buckled or atleast transform that pdst into rage and anger, not fear. But unfortnuate its canon and luckily I have the power to headcanon that sorry mess that it was adam's bro as adam died long before (making the fusion remark fit better) good god I wish dread didnt canonize that series further... Wish it was buried.
Character point; while I completely agree with you, apparently there were some dev interviews between Other M's release and Dread's that explain things as to why this version of Samus is weird, mostly due to translation errors. Apparently Samus Aran is actually not originally intended to be a "bounty hunter", but rather that was a Nintendo Japan misunderstanding as to what "bounty hunter" means and they actually meant her to be a "galactic warrior", more like a Conan the Barbarian or Jedi than a Boba Fett. The Devs of Corruption apparently sussed this out making that game as they were originally going to actually have 3 optional bounty targets at one point in development and someone on the Nintendo Japan side said "no, Samus wouldn't do this, wdym?" It apparently never occurred to that team what a Bounty Hunter actually does. There were other things apparently specific to Other M that make the Japanese version actually make more sense than the translation as well, but idr what those were and while significantly better it hardly makes it good.
And this misunderstanding ended up creating a very novel take on a mercenary. Samus is someone who looks to help the galaxy, but takes on the career of bounty hunting as it allows her to deal with things her way without worrying about commanding officers.
Tbh... I really enjoyed Other M and Federation Forces. Other M needed traditional controls but I enjoyed it none the less. I love the entire prime series but I absolutely loved 3. The voice acting wasnt amazing but it wasnt bad.. but after the intro of the game , the gameplay is largely what we got from 1 and 2 so not sure what you're talking about. The game had better mechanics and had more indepth worlds with richer lore and detail. Plus the graphics are so much better than 1 and 2 though the character design for zero suit was not great. Wasn't bad just less real and more animated. I also find it interesting what was taken from each of the prime games and Other M and put in Dread. Like the over all animations for samus movement from other M
Dude, Other M was mistranslated. It's ruined Samus and Adam characters. In Japanese translation this story is very well told and I think it's a masterpiece.
I'd be interested to hear the proper translation, but I can't imagine my issues with the characters and story would be resolved with just a more accurate translation.
Am I going to get crap for saying I think Other M’s story is more badly told than it is bad in and of itself? Many of the story gripes you have are explained in the game, but admittedly not in the best way.
Nah, I won't give you crap for it. However, I don't think my issues with Other M came from the story elements not being explained well enough, I think they are just either bad or inappropriate story elements. They essentially wanted to tell an origin story for Samus but they put it in the latter half of the series, which just didn't work for me.
16:06 I think the reason why Samus freaks out is because riddly killed her parents and the game just assumed you knew this Source: some obscure fucking manga I learned about yesterday
Sakamoto is still the writer of Dread, western writers have only worked on Prime. Also, Nintendo themselves consider Samus to be more in line with how Sakamoto has characterized her. When Retro was developing the Prime series, they wanted to have Samus go on hunter missions, but Nintendo dismissed that idea because in their words; Samus is a very caring and Motherly person who isn't interested in money. That motherly nature was meant to be the reason why she spared the infant Metroid. Her choice words of Hatchling comes from the translation more so than being a cold description. I don't think you did a very good job in your research, you used moments from the games and gave your own subjective interpretation over them. For example the bounty hunter that Samus has to kill, she actually doesn't kill him. Dark Samus did, and then Samus is supposed to be pissed at Dark Samus for causing who she consider a friend to die
@@AuthorativeMrM DidYouKnow Gaming for how Nintendo views Samus. I can post under this comment. And if you care there is a video that gets into how the localized story gets changed slightly due to miscommunication about the translations
@@1001johny So a few things: Sakamoto just provided the loose concept for Metroid Dread’s story. Mercury Steam is a western developer. That’s awesome that someone from Nintendo offered their perspective on how they see Samus’s character, but that’s ultimately irrelevant because how she was shown in Other M is not how most of her fans see her, which is why so many people (myself included) had major problems with the game, and it’s pretty clear that Nintendo took the side of the people who disliked Other M. Also, SAMUS killed all the other bounty hunters in Metroid Prime 3, not Dark Samus. Thank you for watching the video all the way through. 👍

What gimmicks are you refering to the counter and emmis because thoes do not take anything away from metriod. Heck the emmi gimmick has been done before in metriod fusion with the sa-x. So what gimmicks are you refering to.
The baby the baby the baby 🍼. Did Adam give you permission to upload this, Princess lol
Omg you’re so close to 1K! Congrats! 🎉
Thanks, Raya!
Thanks Jenn!
Excellent vid Mr. M 👏 so well done! I'll play that Other M copy sooner or later lol The Metroid franchise is thriving once again. Hopefully, they learned from their past mistakes.
Well ... don't let me scare you off. It's still a decent Metroid game, just not as good as most of the others. 😏
Not sure if intentional, but I get mid-2000's game reviewer vibes from your format, and I appreciate that.
Good stuff man!
Thanks! I suppose it's intentional, I try to mimic (to the best of my abilities) the style of channels and videos that I myself like to watch. :D
Small correction on control criticism, it is 8 directions, not limited to 4.
I agree with that, the worst thing a video game (or movie!) can be is completely middle of the road.
Another great video.. and your almost to a Thousand subscribers!🍺🍷 congratulations!
Thanks, Greg! Almost there!
As you know, I know zippo about video games….what I DO know is excellence in production, commentary, product knowledge and passion. You have that…in spades. Well done.
Thank you! (You should play the Metroid games some time 😆)
@6Sally5 you seem like a very wise man!
Feds in Prime 3: "Were just Allies that viewed Samus as a friendly neighborhood bounty hunter and a great role model that would help out if really needed."
Feds in Other M: "Cliche Government with a facist agenda that makes Samus doubt them."
I very much wish they kept the feds portrayed in Prime 3 and stayed consistent with it.
Totally agree!
@@AuthorativeMrM one issue I have with prime 3 and the game Metroid prime hunters is there's multiple hunters that had potential to be amazing characters yet they were wasted. (rundas Ghor Gandrayda trace weavl janden noxus and spire)
they deserved better tbh. the prime 3 hunters Coulda been fantastic companions and the prime hunters Coulda made an amazing rogue gallery.
at least sylux somewhat has potential
Great recap. I've only ever beat Fusion, but as you know I'm doing 16-bit games this year and will fire up Super Metroid very soon.
You haven't played Super Metroid yet? That's honestly surprising to me, but I'm definitely curious to find out how you think it compares to Fusion, since you don't have any nostalgia blinders for the SNES game.
Excellent video as always Mr.M, Gongrats on 1K subs
What Metroid prime 3 wasn’t that bad of a game in fact it’s my favorite of the 3.
I thought the environmental design knocked it out of the park.
@@AuthorativeMrM Maybe a follow-up vid? Congrats on reaching 1k subs, btw. Well earned.
Agreed. And if it was an origin story, they could have went wild with it, and I feel fans would have been more open to the idea. A side story about Samus' time in the Federation army with multiple characters and plotlines sounds kind of cool.
If you haven't seen it, look up a video called "The other M that never was". It shows how the translation made Samus' characterization even worse
I've heard a lot about this mistranslation. Now I'm curious, so I'll check that out, thanks!
12:50 a japanese speaking man, next to poster written in french, in a yt clip in english... Interesting...
Thanks, man! I'll be interested to hear your take on Other M when you get to it!
That's a fair point. 🤔
Thank you, Loh! Yeah, Nintendo should definitely give Metroid some more love, Mario & Zelda pretty much get all of their attention.
@@AuthorativeMrM of course! Samus could definitely be the third icon in Nintendo Co. Greetings!
I'm sure I will play through Other M somewhere in between :)
As always, terrific editing, and research on this one!
Stellar review, Mr. Matthews! 🌟
Your content never ceases to impress. 💯
Thank you, Celestial!
Well. Said.
There were no misconceptions surrounding Samus. Sakamoto was wrong to try "correcting" what the fandom liked about her.
@user-pk1op2iv3f Lol ... okay. Am I supposed to be nervous that you're talking about Steve? 😄
@user-pk1op2iv3f I guess so 🤷♂️
I’m not too worried about him coming to the US to beat me up, but I appreciate your concern.
really enjoyed the video, but there’s a bit of revisionist history going on here. prime 3 didn’t get a lukewarm reception, it was received really well at the time across the board with both fans and critics (90% on metacritic) and upon announcement i don’t remember anybody being upset that retro weren’t making other m- everybody seemed incredibly hyped about the game and the team ninja involvement was actually a big part of that. it wasn’t until after the game released and fans got a hold of it when the hate really set in.

Awesome review MrM thats why you deserve more than 1k subs, i need to replay all the other metroid game before going to this one.
Thanks, Mazin! I can't wait to watch all your Metroid NDRs, up to (and possibly including) Other M!
definitive version of prime 1 being the Wii version is crazy now
Yeah, that got outdated pretty quickly. Metroid Prime Remastered hadn't been announced when I originally recorded the video...
I agree with this. Prime 3 being "the worst" of the series to me is still probably a B+ experience.
This channel is pretty underrated.
@@AuthorativeMrM I may have been wrong about Prime. I’m getting into it finally.
@@DrGamelove Awesome!
In Other M the 2.5D is amazing and after you master the combat it is almost the easiest Metroid game out there with great combos... Unfortunately the controls aren't good enough to make use of it and the game is short, Eye spy is just way too dark and inorganic, and story is horrible.
Great work, man! Remember when westerners used to hate "westernized" games?? Oh, how the times have changed...
Yeah, we've definitely come a long ways since the 8 and 16-bit days!
I am under SERIOUS influence of alcohol and less than 1:00 in... but I have a feeling on this one. APPROVE.
Can't distinctly remember that)
Also, while I think Other M is fine and honestly for the 5 dollars I got it for I have fun playing it every once in a while but uh... hot take that "it's fine" and "still a Metroid game".
Badass bounty hunter that faced ridley a couple of times *already*
Suddenly buckles and remakes samus's personality into something she just does not fit as...

Un juego excelente víctima de otra review llena de prejuicios.
That's interesting! (and certainly explains a few things).
Also allegedly Samus was supposed to be perceived very differently from how she ended up from what I hear

The Japanese script ruined them, too. Other M is just dogshit in any language.
@@AuthorativeMrM That’s at least more palatable than most of what passes for criticism nowadays tbh.
16:06 I think the reason why Samus freaks out is because riddly killed her parents and the game just assumed you knew this
Source: some obscure fucking manga I learned about yesterday
Source?
@@AuthorativeMrM DidYouKnow Gaming for how Nintendo views Samus. I can post under this comment.
