It’s not yet clear how the new tax rule will affect individual expats. The dual tax treaty probably means at most you might be liable for the difference if anything. Thai taxes are progressive with 35% being the top rate. Only money brought into Thailand is liable to taxation and you would have to be bringing in a lot to reach the 35% rate. It is a change though that is concerning potential expats considering Thailand.
I’ve been to Thailand and the prices were significantly higher than my weekly monthly budget in the Philippines, the accommodation is fairly the same but the price of the food is a bit cheaper.
Its not surprising that Thailand is way way more inexpensive than in the Philippines, because of the numbers of tourists thats coming to Thailand. Its like 300% more than the tourist thats coming to the Philippines.
I personally love the culture of Thailand ... the history, heritage, folklore, arts, architecture, Buddhism, etc. Both are great countries with friendly people. The extent English is spoken in the Philippines is fantastic, though. Thailand is a richer country with a better infrastructure.
Truth is, in Southeast Asian region Thailand nature is only at par with its neighboring countries Laos and Cambodia. Even their culture, language, and cuisine are similar. Cambodia and Laos claim Thailand copied their culture, cuisine. Thailand is wonderful but it is actually far from being unique in SE Asia, but excels in Tourism.
@@UserDythfds-nx6ie Well, everywhere you go in the world, culture of neighboring countries always influence each other and thus, it would be a little bit similar to each other. However, similar doesn't mean the same. As someone who has been to almost all ASEAN countries, Thailand is unique, Cambodia is unique, Laos in unique. To go deeper, Thai culture is a blend of Northern Thai (Lanna people similar to Yunan in China), Southern Thai (similar to Malay culture), Central Thai (Influences from Hindu, Southern Chinese, Indigenous people in SEA, Northeastern Thai (Mix between Thai, Vietnamese, Laos). It's like saying Philippines is far from being unique because Spain, Malaysia and USA stated that Philippines copied their culture, cuisine and language. And thus Philippines has no real identity
I do agree with him in regards to accommodations and food. And I am Filipino. Thailand all the way, BUT not sure if he has come across the latest Thailand tax law that is effective 2024 - though you would pay taxes in the US for your income and or a retirement fund, it will be double taxed in Thailand (up to 35%). Now, because of that, I’m expecting a mass exodus of ex-pats leaving Thailand. Would love to hear other thoughts on this to keep me honest.
You are also required to report to the Thailand Immigration Bureau every 90 days. And if you plan to travel within Thailand you are also required to disclose all the places you plan to visit and probably report back upon your return. Freaking hassle, no thank you
@@richardparker1338 Oh yeah? Visa cost should be part of the "cost" to live somewhere. If it costs $25,000 for a visa to live in Thailand for 5 years (and then that visa needs to be renewed) that is very, very expensive compared to other countries. Especially for retirees living on a fixed income. Thailand is missing an opportunity to make a lot of money from retirees who would be spending money on a place to live, food, health care, etc., without taking away jobs or committing crimes. A potential win/win for Thailand.
knowledge of english is linked with friendliness, or at least perceived friendliness. the locals will be more willing to interact with tourists or foreigners if they can communicate in a common language. Zane's final point about the Bangkok metro is valid.........it's rapidly expanding. pretty soon you'll be able to get anywhere via the metro system , plus maybe a moto-taxi for the final mile. now if they can just keep parts of it from breaking off and falling down, it'll be heaven! those tracks are way up there 😂
I am a foodie. I like papaya salad, but everything else in Thai dish is like typical chinese food with coconut cream/milk. I used to live near 3 Thai Restaurants when I lived in Houston. Philippines food has more variety from across the world. I prefer Vietnamese food better than Thailand. To each their own. This Guy has always liked Thailand. He should meet up with Mergim.
Thai food is more diverse than you might think. Sunday is mostly focused on frying. Thai people in the provinces like to eat chili paste with vegetables on the side. A variety of fresh fish and fried or grilled fish
@@สุทธิศักดิ์มธุรพงศากุล yes there are variety. Many Foreigners already highlighted that it’s better than Filipino food that’s why I’m saying my take on it.
No, You are wrong. Thai food is actually much better than Filipino food. Consider this: how many tens of thousands of Thai restaurants there are in nearly every country in the world. People all over the world love Thai food.
Thanks for the video, does not matter which is better? Majority of these farangs and expats are going and flying back and forth to Thailand and Philippines vice versa as they can't make up their mind. You will do the same thing too. Both countries have the same concepts as quality of life, nightlife and everything.
Thailand is cheaper but your income as a YTer will likely be lower than in the Philippines. Many YTers from Thailand went over to Philippines to boost their subscriber base and they were very open about that.
very true. however, things may start to pivot as views of UA-camrs are starting to decline. vlogging in the PH is becoming too saturated, even the well-known vloggers who have spent at least a year here are struggling to keep up with the numbers. its too obvious not to notice it. and tbh, it can eventually work in favor of the PH to slowly get rid of a toxic concept called pinoybaiting.
@@kristinhannah001I understand “pinoybaiting” concept…. You know a lot of SE Asian people are starting to hate us Filipinos because Filipinos think the world revolve around us?! This needs to stop. Effective Jan 1 of this year, Thailand will tax foreign income at a 35% rate including pensions. This, the Philippines DOES NOT do, making the Philippines a better deal, independent of potential cost of living differences or other factors. US citizens must pay US taxes on their worldwide income, which means potential”y being double-taxed if residing in Thailand.
@@martypoll You don’t understand tax treaties. They only give you a tax credit for what you owe in your nonresident country, but you still have to pay the full tax rate, less the credit, in your resident country. Specifically, this is because income tax rates for a given income amount may be different (with the US rate usually lower because of the deductions that are uniquely allowed in the US tax system), between the two counties. For example, if your US marginal tax rate is 15% and the same income in Thailand, a poorer country, is 25%, then one would pay the US 15%, get a credit for this toward the 25% due in Thailand, and hav etc pay the Thai govt 10%. Notably, the Thai govt has indicated they intend to tax money brought/transferred into Thailand (known as a remittance) from outside the kingdom at the same rate. The implication of this stated policy is that even non-income savings would be taxed.
@@dr.michaellittle5611 I understand all that. The question is will the difference be enough to leave or decide not to come in the first place. There would be various exemptions available in Thailand to reduce your tax as well. They have progressive tax rates so the rate depends on how much you bring in. Also, the burden will depend on what country you are from. The US taxes pensions but in other countries they don’t. A tip: if you can qualify and get the 10-year LTR visa then the money you bring into Thailand is not taxable
@@martypoll But why would anyone want to “invest” $250k in Thai bonds or property in a country that is essentially a military dictatorship just to have a visa? The Philippines doesn’t have such a ridiculous requirement (my deposit was only $1,500) for a retirement visa and they don’t tax foreign income.
@@dr.michaellittle5611 Sorry. I have the 10 year pensioner LTR visa. No investment required. As far the government is concerned it has been very stable for the 7 years I’ve lived here and there is no longer a military government.
The title of this video is misleading. They don't talk about retirement at all. The Philippines does have the advantage with low cost visas using the 3 year of extending a tourist visa.. They leave the misimpression that it costs $25,000/5 years to stay in Thailand. The Thailand Elite visa is a real program targeted toward wealthy expats of any age. For expats over 50, most get the O visa. You extend this visa yearly for $52/year. However there are financial requirements. You either have to deposit about $22,000 in a Thai bank OR deposit $1,800/month into a Thai bank (you can spend all the money using the monthly income method).
Cambodia is cheaper for retired people - ''if'' - you consider visa costs & no visa runs + the $180/year low cost. --- All expenses need to be considered and ease of being there - long term. Khmer people are even friendlier than the Filipinos & they too speak English - and - they even take USD's ! Siem Reap is a beautiful city with lots of international food choices very low rents some 20K expats from many countries PUB STREET and even 50 cent beers many places !!! -- Big enough but not too big. -- Many simply love living there. And Bangkok is a cheap 1 hour flight away - for fun or quality affordable health services. > It too is said to be a good bit cheaper than the Philippines ! Several who have lived both places say so and even confirm the "friendlier people" - believe it or not ?!? = Worth a try.
Filipinos are really not that friendly. We’re welcoming by nature but we have our boundaries. ;) PH is a Christian/Catholic Country, reason a lot of Western Foreigners relate to PH more than Cambodia.
When it comes to natural scenery, the Philippines and Indonesia are definitely better. Thailand does not have as many islands and has limited natural beauty, diversity, resources. Even the beaches not as awesome as in the Philippines. Philippine beaches ranked higher in many international "Best beaches" lists. Tourism in Thailand is just promoted very well, and yes, have much better infrastructure. This is commendable.
Philippines and Indonesia are on another level when it comes to nature with so many thousand islands and very rich natural resources. Philippines is the most different and quite unique country in whole Asia when it comes to ancestral heritage, culture, language, cuisine, personality of the people.
That's why other Asians think Philippines is different and quite unique, not typical Asian country, with diverse heritage and culture. Only in this globalization age the other Asian countries have become more Westernized, the Philippines has had Spanish influences for centuries and American influences for decades. Pacific Islander, Indones/Malay, Chinese, Indian, Spanish, Japanese, American, Korean are the cultural diversity of the Philippines.
Sorry but I've gotta disagree. While Thailand may be cheaper in some areas? The kingdom is getting more expensive. Especially regarding "adult services." Beyond that, the women you can attract differs dramatically. A sixties retired man is going to pay a lot more for a twenties girlfriend in Thailand, compared to the Philippines. If he can find one at all. Forties would be more likely. Thirties only if he's got his act together. While finding a twenty-something Filipina, especially in the provinces, willing and happy to be that sixty-something's girlfriend/wife? Is a lot easier.
For your information infrastructure in Philippines is better , There have already modern LRT & MRT, modern sky ways , overpass, bridges, long elevated roads, expressways etc .and continiously improving because today there have many many BIG Infra projects are ongoing construction all over Manila including the new modern BiG international airports , new modern LRT & MRT trains and ambitious Rapid Subway Train which is pattered in Japan Subway so it's very modern & updated designed in South East Asia, when finished all the BIG infra projects all over Metro Manila Philippines will become having one the BEST infra on earth..anyways Philippines is the first country in South East Asia to built LRT train.. Philippines is progressing fast! The Philippines is the Best for foreign expats because where on earth you can see the 3 wonderl of nature ( MT Mayon, Subterranean underground river,& Chocolate Hills) in one country? Only in the Philippines, is Thailand or Vietnam or other South East Asian Countries have wonder of nature? Except beaches please...just asking.
Thailand all the way however there visas are dumb! So i chose Philippines! If Thailand has more of a Philippines mindset on visa extensions i would move to Thailand.
Its very simple Advantage PH is only Visa, Language and woman. All the rest TH is much better than PH (cheaper, cleaner, modern, traffic, food, infrastructure, service, much safer, no US influence, much less or no war potential with China, etc.) Don’t forget - PH is third world country - TH is second going to first world
I disagree with this guy regarding visa in Thailand and he referred to the ELITE VISA in this case for 5 years but is not just a visa they have lots of benefits with it and by the time you splitting this into the years it's a good buy. Also are other types of visas more affordable and very good for the time that you be spending in the kingdom.
I have the Thailand 10 year pensioner LTR visa. It costs $1,300 for 10 years. No money in the bank requirements but it does have a health insurance requirement. You have to be over 50 and have a passive/pension income of $80,000/yr

The folklore, arts, and architecture are also similar, I guess even the religion.
100% agreed, Thai culture is much more interesting / unique than the Philippines
@@soul2401 So what is the real Thai identity when its all or mostly copied from other original cultures?
I do agree with him in regards to accommodations and food. And I am Filipino. Thailand all the way, BUT not sure if he has come across the latest Thailand tax law that is effective 2024 - though you would pay taxes in the US for your income and or a retirement fund, it will be double taxed in Thailand (up to 35%). Now, because of that, I’m expecting a mass exodus of ex-pats leaving Thailand. Would love to hear other thoughts on this to keep me honest.
No kidding? I reckon that'll have a HUGE impact on the retirement and expat scene in Thailand...
You are also required to report to the Thailand Immigration Bureau every 90 days. And if you plan to travel within Thailand you are also required to disclose all the places you plan to visit and probably report back upon your return. Freaking hassle, no thank you
@@richardparker1338 Oh yeah? My friends from HK that own a villa in Thailand report to the Bureau when they do cycling trips within Thailand
BTW, an excerpt
90 Day Reporting Procedure
Notification can be done in three ways. The foreigner makes the notification in person, or authorises another person to make the notification or makes the notification by registered mail.
Online notification has been trialed but the system rarely works.
@@richardparker1338 I beg to differ. To keep me honest check out the YT video of one of my favorite Thailand Tubers, “Retired Working For You” in a UA-cam video of him interviewing a Thailand lawyer, talking about this new tax law. Titled, “this new tax law has everyone scared”.
And yes, savings will be considered as income. Check it out.
@@richardparker1338 You just said they don't need to report places to visit yet now you say they do for cycling trips. That was my comment in the first place
Speaking of Thailand, check out LISA - ROCKSTAR.
Bangkok is way more developed than Manila. Just look at the GDP per capita...
Thailand vs maylasia?
THAILAND hands down
Thai food is hands down better than Filipino food. Anyone saying otherwise is lying 😂
This guy u r interviewing , he’s pretty accurate…
knowledge of english is linked with friendliness, or at least perceived friendliness. the locals will be more willing to interact with tourists or foreigners if they can communicate in a common language.
Zane's final point about the Bangkok metro is valid.........it's rapidly expanding. pretty soon you'll be able to get anywhere via the metro system , plus maybe a moto-taxi for the final mile. now if they can just keep parts of it from breaking off and falling down, it'll be heaven! those tracks are way up there 😂
That is why I go to Thailand.
Mergim โดนคนฟิลิปินด่าตอนมาไทย? รีบกลับฟิลิปปินส์แทบไม่ทัน ไปหาเงินในปินส์แล้วเอาใช้ที่ไทยนะ mergim 😂
No, You are wrong. Thai food is actually much better than Filipino food. Consider this: how many tens of thousands of Thai restaurants there are in nearly every country in the world. People all over the world love Thai food.
@@mrbutch308 Thai food flavors all taste like Mexican candy to me.
Thanks for the video, does not matter which is better? Majority of these farangs and expats are going and flying back and forth to Thailand and Philippines vice versa as they can't make up their mind. You will do the same thing too. Both countries have the same concepts as quality of life, nightlife and everything.
The Phillipines was great in 1982 ! Subic Bay US Navy!!!
where are these thai pool villas on the beach that you can rent for $500? never seen this
Thailand is cheaper but your income as a YTer will likely be lower than in the Philippines.
We’re not the only people in the world who stays on Social Media. Our country and people are just very welcoming and inviting by nature. That’s why a lot of Foreigners feel at home, but PH isnt all that!

I love Thailand but in the Philippines prefer not be crowded by the Tourist...also good for the nature.
I live in Thailand. Tax treaties remain in place. You will not be double if you pay any tax at all.
@@martypoll
You don’t understand tax treaties.
The Phillipines is predominantly a Christian country though
Hence why it's so messed up.
When it comes to vice , both are equal. Corruption , sex tourism, etc
Thialand is more international, especially Bangkok. Also Thialand has the prettiest girls in the World !!!
We’re welcoming by nature but we have our boundaries. ;)
PH is a Christian/Catholic Country, reason a lot of Western Foreigners relate to PH more than Cambodia.
Talk about cheaper wait until phil started exporting gas and oil.when i dont know..
if this interview was done a few months ago, Zane may be have changed his mind about the PH after his recent series in Vismin.

Oh! a modern day Marco Polo just speaks out.
Its very simple
Advantage PH is only Visa, Language and woman.
All the rest TH is much better than PH (cheaper, cleaner, modern, traffic, food, infrastructure, service, much safer, no US influence, much less or no war potential with China, etc.)
Don’t forget - PH is third world country - TH is second going to first world
I disagree with this guy regarding visa in Thailand and he referred to the ELITE VISA in this case for 5 years but is not just a visa they have lots of benefits with it and by the time you splitting this into the years it's a good buy.
It is not cheaper in Thailand, after living in the Philippines for 3 years and now living in Thailand…I would argue he is wrong.
Better to retire in the Philippines because you just to live in southern Thailand because northern Thailand is boring unlike in the Philippines you can live north and south and you have a lot of things to do.
I'm Filipino and i think Thailand is far way better than my country

Stop comparing PHILIPPINES FROM THAILAND! and your guest is from Thailand 😂😂😂😂
if you don’t have to live on shoe string budget Thailand is much better in all the key areas. if you dont have much money the Philippines is 3rd world country amazing people but poor infrastructure, dirty , loud and healthcare average and very bad local foods
