My ancestors were early settlers in this area. Spent a large part of my childhood in Aurora, during the 50's/60's/70's. I remember when downtown was always busy. The City Hall, sitting on the town square, hosted many a band and dances on Saturdays on the steps during the summer. Fairs and festivals were held there. Farmers set up little stands and sold their vegetables. Families laid blankets on the ground and had picnics. Went countless times to the drive-in movies and the Princess theatre that is now a church. My son performed in a play at the Princess when he was 4. The yearly rodeo was held near the drive-in and attracted huge crowds. White Park, where you showed the swimming pool, was where we held our family reunions and played on what would now be considered vintage and unsafe playground equipment. We later moved our reunions to the park in Marionville. My dad lived and died in Marionville and it made me so sad to see the downtown area fall into negligence and decay. Many of my relatives still live in the area, while I am now in Joplin. Countless of my ancestors are buried in Aurora and other nearby cemeteries. These towns have special meaning to me and have blessed me with lifelong memories, but they have their downsides today. The neglect of the downtown areas, the higher crime rate in Aurora, the lack of places for teens to find safe havens to gather for entertainment and socializing, lack of employment opportunities to provide for families, all have led to their decline. The areas also have a long history of racism, shown by your own statistics. There are few black people in Aurora, and perhaps none in Marionville or Crane. Records show that black people were run out of town, and even murdered, in and around Aurora many years ago. All of these towns are predominantly white and Republican. Very little diversity, although most people are kind, help their neighbors in need and staunchly hold onto their religious beliefs.
Me too. Our town is in the middle of 2 medium size towns. We have 1 caution light, 2 person Post office, gas station and a Dollar General. That's it. Our front neighbors are cows, back neighbors ate goats and chickens. Beautiful pecan trees everywhere. I wouldn't have it any other way. We've lived here for 35 yrs and only a few times(at Christmas when the gifts are in the trunk), ever locked our car doors. NO ONE has EVER bothered anything in our yard or house. We walk sometimes to our BEAUTIFUL country church which is less than 1/4 mile. A BEAUTIFUL LIFE we have here.

I really enjoy your videos. No drama, no clickbait. Just nice and easy facts and videos about rural US. I guess the low medium age in Marionville and Crane could be because its cheap to buy a house and they all might work in Springfield wich is only a 30-40 minute drive. Also can be the reason for downtown decaying in Marionville. Nobody "lives" there, only sleeps there. Strange contrast indeed on the nice suburbs versus downtown in collaps...Oh and you forgot to mention how many people lives in Aurora.

Great video as usual Joe. Love the small towns. And yeah getting away from the traffic. Really surprised me the medium age there was pretty young most the time in small especially rural areas it’s usually older. Great to see people are not letting them die. This is so good to see Springfield the Aquarium was built shortly before we were stationed in Miramar California. It was a really big deal and it opened the doors for tourism outside of Branson and Lake of the Ozark.
Ex video. Showing your restaurant tab made me chuckle from a recent trip I took. Went to Maine (3 wks ago) visited up down the state, and Maine lobsters in a restaurant are cheaper at home (FL) versus Maine; and every meal was almost identical to your bill. It's simply pricey everywhere and many locals can no longer support their local businesses, sad state of affairs in USA, Canada, and Europe.
Looking at those cost of living graphics the housing is just above half the national average but food is close to the same as everywhere else. Corporate price gouging is destructive to small town living. This started during the pandemic and never stopped. As they say the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
My neighbors just returned from Maine and reported the same thing. Very expensive Lobster and is better and just as fresh and better priced in other places in the country
I'm telling ya...Mansfield and Ava and Forsyth, MO is worth a video! Forsyth is where Winter's Bone was filmed. Mansfield is where the Little House books were written. Ava is where "The Hustler" is from. It's also the area with something like the 5th most tributaries in the US!
Ava politics and law enforcement are horribly corrupt. Literally Everyone I know there has either been thrown in jail for ridiculous small reasons or is on parole. Beautiful area in the high country of Missouri though.
Seeing these small towns with their semi-abandoned main streets makes me want to grab my camera, hit the road to go see them in person and take tons of pictures. And that community pool...it has a diving board! Sadly, they are pretty much extinct in California. Ah, The Wonders of Wildlife Museum! When I first heard about it I scoffed at the idea of a "Disneyfied" aquarium. But wow, I was impressed and really enjoyed my visit (it was especially nice since it was 90 degrees and super humid outside 🙂) The whole complex with the Bass Superstore is a worthy stop for any fan of roadside attractions. See you in the land of Lincoln...happy trails!
Harvey Phillips is one of greatest of all time. Taught at Indiana for many years, after a great career as player in NYC. Indiana has one of the finest music school in the country.
Another great tour Joe & Nic. I really liked Marionville and Aurora and the Missouri countryside is gorgeous. The aquarium was it in Springfield MO or Springfield IL? Wow $45 a ticket, it had better be a good one at that price! 😮🤑
Fish swimming in a circle or as a mass is called schooling. It protects most of them from predators.. safety in numbers. The Hemingway restaurant reminds me of the one trip to an Island my fiancé and I visited in 1979, St. Lucia , it was Hemingway's inspiration for many of His writings. Small world , eh? I don't know if he ever was in Springfield, Cheers, Rik
Welcome back to SW Missouri, Nick and Joe! Fun (or morbid, perhaps) Fact: Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her mother Dee Dee lived in both Aurora and Springfield Missouri. The murder of Dee Dee occurred in Springfield.
That aquarium was neat, and looked to be worth $45 ticket price. As usual, I always get hungry when you show the meals that you and Nicole order. And seeing the deserts is really a challenge. Thank you.
Thanks so much for the video. I love going all around the country with y’all. The sad thing about this town is it was a beautiful day and there’re no children outside playing or anyone walking or doing lawn work. It’s very sad to think everybody’s inside watching their devices and television with the children on their games and nobody’s outside anymore.😔
Appreciate the tour of these small rural towns. I really like these tours. I’d be so happy to travel the roads and enjoy the scenery. I do like the City Hall in Aurora. I like Crane’s downtown. The Aquarium is very nice. Lion fish are cool. Looking forward to your next video!
My mother was born and partially raised in Ash Grove Missouri not far from Springfield. I don't even know if that town still exists. It might be a deserted looking place like some of these others that you go through.
I am from Springfield and I can assure you, Ash Grove does exist. My dentist is there because it cost about a third less than what it would cost in Springfield to have dental work done.
Interesting to see one of my towns shown. I watch often and always wondered if I'd catch you driving through. The thing is these towns have branched out like all towns where the old city square just didn't get the action because of the modern big box stores. There's about 90% more to at least two of the towns shown.
Very cool, I have family in Marionville and Aurora. :) My family moved to the area (Billings) in the 1880s I believe. They were originally from Germany. SW MO has such a distinctive feel to me, I think it’s so beautiful. I hope these historic downtowns are revitalized. Also, I think my dad worked at that restaurant as a kid 😂
Where are you stopping in Delaware? In New Castle you have Old New Castle by the Delaware Bridge and the university of Delaware in Newark. In the state capital you have the Monster Mile at Dover Downs where NASCAR runs every year. Then of course you have the beaches down south, Rehoboth, Dewey, Bethany, etc. Heads up though, try and do Delaware on a weekday! Traffic on beach weekends can be horrendous! If you want to check out a neat place right over the line in Maryland, stop in Chesapeake City! The Bayard House, Schaffer’s and the Chesapeake Inn are all great places to eat there and all three are right on the C&D canal.
Joe, another very good video. All three towns had their strong and weak points. There was nothing exceptional about any of them. If you like aquariums check out the National Aquarium in Baltimore if you are so inclined. Your video of the shark was perfect. You had it framed and the head on shot was very good. Once you have had a Texas Chicken Fried Steak all others pale in comparison. It is supposed to be made from cheap beef and I'm sure the cost of bison steak isn't cheap. Thanks again for the entertainment you provide.
G'day Joe n Nic, I've been to a big bass store in your country and it's like something out of Disney World, Impressive. The easy way to tell the difference between an Alligator and an Indo - Australian estuarine crocodile is to go for a swim and if you survive it's not a salty 👍.

This is so good to see Springfield the Aquarium was built shortly before we were stationed in Miramar California. It was a really big deal and it opened the doors for tourism outside of Branson and Lake of the Ozark.
Love to see the America the mainstream ignores. This is our nation's history on display. It's fascinating!!

@davehughesfarm7983 please be quiet, dave.
@@stephenB49Why? He is right on target.
My neighbors just returned from Maine and reported the same thing. Very expensive Lobster and is better and just as fresh and better priced in other places in the country
Good morning Joe,Nic nice that 1st town looks Badly kept up wow all the rest not to Bad wow that aquarium is really cool thank you for the video
I just about bought 47 acres in the vicinity you were in today with an 1/8 acre of ninagua river on it.
Great little river for canoeing!😊
Congrats! 🎉🎉
Hey Joe & Nicole, sending hugs your way!
Thank you for posting this. I really like your content.
Joe, has a smooth speaking style. A pleasure to see and listen to their videos.
: ) THANKS MUCH for sharing ! ! LOVED the Aquarium : ) Safe travels and ALL the BEST ! !
I really enjoyed the museum, thank you 😊
Wow, Springfield, Missouri, is where I received my naturalization papers in 1956. My dad was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood , Missouri.
Where are you originally from?
Wonderfully informative video. Thanks for sharing.
THANKS JOE AND NIC ❤
Another great tour Joe & Nic. I really liked Marionville and Aurora and the Missouri countryside is gorgeous. The aquarium was it in Springfield MO or Springfield IL? Wow $45 a ticket, it had better be a good one at that price! 😮🤑
it’s in springfield mo!
@@elizabetht308 Thanks Elizabeth, there's lots of Springfields in America. 🤗😕
Enjoyed watching 👀
Fish swimming in a circle or as a mass is called schooling.
It protects most of them from predators.. safety in numbers.
The Hemingway restaurant reminds me of the one trip to an Island my fiancé and I visited in 1979,
St. Lucia , it was Hemingway's inspiration for many of His writings.
Small world , eh?
I don't know if he ever was in Springfield,
Cheers,
Rik
I love the old ghost signs of history past but just still visible 😊
We watch almost daily, from South Africa. I would love to get in touch with a idea.
Love the show.
Flavor explosion-the duck poppers!
Thank you, Alexandra!
Its like back to 90s to 2000 good old days vibe. Beautiful houses
Saturday was flag day, nice to see the flags. Enjoyed all locations! Thank you!
Hello from Hindmarsh Island South Australia love watching your videos very interesting thank you ❤
Thanks for watching!
The lion fish's saving grace: they're good eatin'!
I always enjoy your videos! Thanks for the museum tour! Cool place!
I hope, wish you’d do Paw Paw and Mendota Illinois. Both have differed so much since the 60-70’s! But they are still beautiful little towns
I love small towns. Wow, it must have been a happening place in its day.
Love this area! Have some family not far from where you showed us!
Interesting to see one of my towns shown. I watch often and always wondered if I'd catch you driving through. The thing is these towns have branched out like all towns where the old city square just didn't get the action because of the modern big box stores. There's about 90% more to at least two of the towns shown.
Amazing bolt- on- house. Huge...
Enjoyed the aquarium a lot!
Who drives ? While you run the stats, great team work you two ❤ the videos. Thanks for keeping your windows spotless,
I love the colour of your hair Nicole. It looks awesome ❤
Thank you!!
Can't get much more depressing than "decaying" and "forgotten."😢
The best towns seem to be those without a free hand out. Love your channel.
It's a thousand miles from nowhere, it don't matter to me. A thousand miles from nowhere and there's nowhere I'd rather be. Signed, Dwight Yoakam.
Dwight yoakam put out some awesome music back in the day. I like him on sling blade
My mom RIP. She had a picture of her with her hands on Dwights ass. LOL. She loved Dwight. Some of the best country comes from Dwight
@@highway9974 Lots of good songs. Thousand miles was my favorite, but I sure love "You're The One". Sorry about your Mom. Lost mine in 2006.
@@stevesloan56 ummmm hmmmm.
Love the tours of the small towns !
Another excellent video Joe, good work.
A surprise… thank you for what you do ❤
I wouldn't expect one of the most outstanding aquariums in the country to be in Springfield, Missouri. Does not compute.🤔🙃
Springfield is FAR from a decaying forgotten town. It's a very friendly, nice place to live and actually growing like crazy.
I live in Sedalia, MO and was just at Bass Pro in Springfield a few weeks ago...really wish I was there when you all were, I would have said hello. Love traveling along with you from my home lol ❤love your videos
