  • If you stumble upon fresh capers it's hard to find a recipe about just how to pickle them. So here it is. Capers are usually ready for harvesting in June. (that's in Turkey) Home pickled capers taste so much better then anything you can buy.

    Hi. How long to keep the jars before they are ready to be eaten? And at what temperature? Thank you!

    • @AtHomeInTurkey

      Hi, I would keep them a few weeks. I never have that because I usually still have some from the year before. And the fist time is many years ago. Good luck!

      They most likely will not pass the border. Here they grow but nobody eats them.

    Christ! The size of the creepy crawlies!!! They look so big you can make a meal with them 😂
    Did you change the water every time? I love capers, the Germans have a dish with veal meatballs in a white sauce with capers - soo delicious!

      Sorry I missed your comment, must have been hiking or something. I changed the water every day when the capers were in the bottle before drying. And those grasshoppers? They don't harm, even look pretty I think.

      @@AtHomeInTurkey They like to lay their eggs in caper bushes. This year a caper bush started growing in the garden and in June I found half the leaves all gone and the bush was full of tiny green grasshoppers. Wasn't too happy with them. Thank you for this explanation. I already have some capers on what's left of the bush but I'll probably let them flower this year as there aren't enough to pickle. I like your way of pickling without salt as they become too salty sometimes and, in any case, we don't need more salt in our diets.

      Hello from Crete! I lived in Germany for over 20 years and also enjoy eating this German recipe with the meatballs and the capers, if you want to cook it the dish is called Königsberger Klopse.

    Great video, do you rinse the capers before eating?

    • @AtHomeInTurkey
      @AtHomeInTurkey  5 років тому +1

      Chris - No need to rinse them after they have been sealed in the jar with the vinegar. When using just use a teaspoon to remove them from the jar and drain off the excess vinegar in the spoon.
