I've been into the Disney Broadway OST's lately, and I think "Home" is so beautiful. With "A Change In Me," I think they totally capture a part of Belle's inner mind that isn't fully explored in the original film. You would think that a song called "Home" would be a lot of waxing about how much someone loves their homeland, but instead, it's about how much the Beast's castle DOESN'T feel like home. It's a little bleak, a little hopeful, and definitely heartfelt.
Rapunzel has similar feelings while living in the tower, but almost in a reversed way, which is what I wanted to tap into here. In "When Will My Life Begin?" Rapunzel's summary of her daily life is made to sound somewhat cheery because she's able to cope with her trapped state on a daily basis, but toward the end, it's made very clear that she's doing just that - coping. I wanted to capture similar feelings in this rewrite, where Rapunzel is almost convincing herself as she's singing that this just is the way things have to be, but as always, her desire for something more spills out in the end.
