Thanks for the shout out Bohemian. She’s definitely a project boat, but nothing insurmountable. Mine was only a little better when I started, but I wasn’t about to let a thoroughbred go to the dump. Hopefully someone nearby buys her.
I would not take that boat if they paid me $1000 and delivered it to my house. I just restored a 1974 Reve De Mer that was in good shape with all the parts and still spent $25000
There might be a Rev De Mare there . Just like that Contessa . I’m going back I’ll find out . The dock master was bragging about one that he thought was worth saving . That might of been it .
I haven't watched Epoxy and Butyl Tape but I will check it out. It's funny to see this gem sitting among several so so sailboats. This is the type of boat I would restore but I am currently saving at Cape Foulweather 25 (Zephyr). With all respect, I would like to highlight the value of a boat like this. She will sail closer to the wind and keep her way on better than most of what's out there. I would not install an inboard but the current OB bracket on the stern is low enough that the prop would be dragging. It's probably mounted like that bc that's where it needs to be. A 2 cylinder diesel installation in a cheap yard should be south of $$65k and you would never regret it, that's Tank, Aperture, shaft, strut, engine room redo, exhaust, installed by a marine mechanic. She will sail much better without an inboard. (edit: strut or aperture, I would choose strut offset). I would never burden her with the weight of electric drive batteries. Restoring a boat like this please don't add too much weight. If you cannot pressure wash, I just brush and scrub(petroleum distillate) paint thinner on all surfaces, especially hidden raw grp. then just wipe it up. Gets all the grease off the laminate. AFTER the Bleach. Never oxy clean, you need to kill the mold. I always coat All raw unsealed laminating resin or cured polyester etc with epoxy resin and HD Filler. It's not as hard to sand as they say, but why even sand it? It will self level and be done if the batch isn't too thick. Also do drawer bottoms this way, top and bottom. EZ to color. I don't see a single piece of plywood that couldn't be repaired. Some of the stuff you get now might not actually be as good. OK there's no chain plates. If there were, you prob wouldn't want them, if they're bronze they might be fine. We made some nice chainplates for a Chris Craft from 2" 316 SS angle, 1-1/2 would work here. The pockets inside the hull could possibly be used as a form to strengthen and build from. This boat looks like it has a structural liner so any modification should really use the existing structure at least as an armature. It can be strengthened where it contacts the hull already. Always consider what needs to flex (all keels sag when heeled) and what can be rigid, like bulkheads might need to float a little. The T track on the coaming indicates this boat has some nice hardware. I would not trade those Gibb winches for anything. The mast is replaceable, sure. but you would never get anything half as good, especially a $30k carbon rig (she was designed to have an Alloy rig). Any generic replacement kit mast would never compare to the spars she has. Please don't waste money on synthetic rigging, that would hurt her resale value. Stainless rigging and coated lifelines, not synthetic. If someone could finish her out at home, it would be much better. Consider putting her in a (well- drained) pit so you could step on and off easier. Be careful building the rudder, too heavy will give her lee helm. Not going to go on and on, but you showed two other boats that would definitely be a waste of money, the opposite of this. Thank You
I was thinking about the rudder myself . On how to construct it with weight in mind . I wish I had the time to do it . You have tuned me up . What a great comment. I have another in mind . But I can’t seem to find anyone that knows what it is. It’s a little boat maybe a 32 with a mizzen mast . Hope to see you there .
@@sailingsvbohemian1464 I believe on epoxies channel he showed it was fiberglass with foam in the middle and had bronze hardware..he ordered some new ones from somewhere and said where to get them.. you need to buy a few acres and just start flipping boats like you did houses.. lol
@@bendaves77 It’s wood core in the middle. There’s a bronze strap inside the rudder that connects the gudgeons to a zinc on the rudder because of the dis-similar metals on the pintles. The rudder is not weighted and the original Jeremy Rogers UK built Contessas had wood rudders.
I love these Contessas! This would only be manageable for a retired person with lots of time on their hands and a spot on there property or like you said at that yard.
Those boats are supposed to be incredibly tough and epoxy and butyl tape has done amazing work on his.. just search on UA-cam for contessa sailboat rebuild and several will pop up.. the problem is that the marina will always want something for it which is why there's so many of these boats sitting around..they could atleast donate them to a good cause where they can be auctioned off before they get this bad
At that marina there’s probably 30 abandoned little sailboats . Most are just old little boats with no value. But there’s two or three more there to see . But that Contessa was probably the best . I think there might be a decent Catalina . And one that has a odd name the dock master was saying it had some type of pedigree. I’ll figure it out . But all for 500 bucks . So it should be interesting to see .
@@sailingsvbohemian1464 definitely worth saving if someone that's within a few hours has the ambition..I live in northwest Illinois not far from the Mississippi River so it's not worth me dragging it all the way here
@@sailingsvbohemian1464 Interesting! I agree with the dock master. A boat can be pedigreed. Sometimes it's not enough to be chosen over what's popular, often because of a seagoing interior that's less condo than newer designs. I don't make videos, but would be interested to see what you find.
You welcome , it’s well deserved. I took a look at that website . You can even have a new 32 contessas built like the old . That’s good to know . I’m afraid to find out what they want for that rudder . I bet more than 500 bucks . The story on the rudder was some guy came along and bought the boat . Then took the rudder home and never returned. The dock master seems to be up on the titles for the old abandoned boats there . I’ll definitely go back and keep a eye out more treasure .
