Arica to La Paz by train (Chile / Bolivia)

- A journey from Arica on the Pacific coast of Chile to La Paz, capital of Bolivia, high in the Andes. This line was once a busy freight link to Bolivia, and had adhesion and rack sections.
A stunning ride where we climb over 12,224 feet as we ascend to the Altiplano in our Bolivian railcar.
Part of a longer trip in Chile and Bolivia organised by Ffestiniog Travel in November 1997.

superb video....it brought back memories of my own trans andean rail journey in '90 from Salta to Antofagasta; i managed to get on a freight into Chile....I found it as you say, out of this world, incredible landscapes, with red and yellow mountains, here's hoping that passenger services return again to the andes

i'm hoping to do this very journey next. watching this has just made want to do it tomorrow, great film. very well done and thanks for sharing. stunning shots from the drivers cabin. that is some feat of engineering. the doberman with the tiny kitten at the start is beautiful.
Wonderful stuff. I recently done that same journey across those wonderful sandy mountains, only difference was that i was on my motorcycle. Its one of the most wonderful places on this planet. thanks for posting

Fiz esta viagem a 50 anos atrás em uma época de inverno e nunca mais esqueci quando chegamos a estação de La PAz e o chefe da estação permitiu que ficassem os com ele em sua sala aquecida , eu um canadense, um americano , duas alemãs, e duas francesas , oh que saudades lembrar disto ,espero que aqueles meus amigos mochileiros da época estejam vivos hoje onde quer que seja mundo e felizes como eu estou .

Tuve la oportunidad de viajar en tren hasta Puquios el año 91 desde donde comence a recorrer todo el altiplano en bicicleta pero estas imagenes reviven esa experiencia, lastima que se hallan suspendido los viajes turisticos.

dear Helmetvanga. I have no idea whats the problem with your comment. The Arica to la Paz Railroad doesn´t work because a few years ago. The bolivian goverment don´t insert money more money for mantenance of the rails and infraestructure. And Now ( 2009 ) Chilean goverment have all the rails in chileand land in perfect conditions to work. Only in The bolivian side need to be repaired. In fact. the managers to this railways are the Bolivian goverment
Es una pena tremenda que este servicio halla desaparecido y que las autoridades no entiendan que es un tremendo aporte al turismo, extranjeros cruzan todo el continente para venir a pasear en este tren y que ahora esas lineas ferreas solo sean hoy un recuerdo.

Preveo viajar en Chile el verano próximo y me preguntaba si todavía era posible tomar el ferrocarril Arica-La Paz. El viaje en ferrocarril me parece magnífico... Leí en internet que había todavía un viaje cada semana que tomaba a pasajeros además de las mercancías. Sabe alguien si es verdadero? Tan sí, cuánto tiempo toma el viaje y cómo podemos reservar nuestro billete?
