      Richard Craig Did you maybe think about the possibility that Linus did NOT have time to search the endless sea of the net trying to find some samples that WEREn't copyright protected? I'm unsure how difficult it could be, but it's possible.

    • @RichardCraig
      @RichardCraig 9 років тому +20

      tpcs Did you maybe think about the possibility that he went on and on about how simple it is to do and could've just used two microphones to demonstrate it?

    • @ThoolooExpress
      @ThoolooExpress 9 років тому +1

      Richard Craig Not just any 2 mics will do, and there's some special processing required to sort out phase issues, so it won't sound terrible on anything other than headphones. Also, it's not very convincing unless you have ear models, and for the best recording you need a head model too. You can buy binaural sets that do all this, but I don't think he's going to spend the money for one video.

    For those interested, you can find a lot of binarual audio in the ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) community as well. HeatherFeather is a great example. There are a few binaural music selections as well. Pink Floyd experimented with it some on tracks like On The Run, as well as a few others. I have a few songs from an Album called PowerCut Volume 3 that was done in binaural as well.

    One thing also that I've heard about with binaural sound is how sounds coming from behind you get slightly muffled by your head and ears being there. It's a pretty important part of the realism of it all.

      @poloniumfist6059 9 років тому +8

    • @Quiet_Viking
      @Quiet_Viking 9 років тому

      Yeah, I was listening to an experimental binaural rooster teeth podcast where they used the dummy head. Whenever they would get up and walk past it to get a drink or yell something from behind it I would instinctively look behind myself in the direction of the sound, even though I knew it was coming from my headphones. It's a pretty strange feeling.

    Hey Linus my first comment. Been following you for a while, I have to say this was really well explained you have me really exited for the future of binaural audio!
    PS can you do a build on a really hardcore music recording machine. Thunderbolt interfaces when recording high-res audio in multiple channels with the daw running all sorts of effects and other fancy stuff takes a lot of power. It would be cool to see what you would build to do such a thing! The deeper I get into making my home recordings I really see how limited I am and can only imagine the potential of a build like that.
    Keep up the good work !

    For recordings, binaural is great. But remember, for real time audio simulation, it takes more in a real time, dynamic, game environment. You need to simulate the bounces sounds make around you to hit your ears, as well as passing through materials.

    A quick note: Actual binaural recordings must include some sort of baffle like the false head (or even a real head in a pinch). Otherwise, all you're left with is an ORTF pickup pattern, which sounds completely different than binaural.

    My car stereo did Binaural. Years ago the Alex Bennet show in San Francisco said they were wiring a 'head' shaped microphone into the board and they would give us a demo in a few minutes. They cut to some commercials and I changed freeways and forgot. Then suddenly they came back and it sounded like someone had materialized in my passenger seat. I almost ran off the road when I jumped.

  • @holopengin
    @holopengin 9 років тому +1

    You slightly missed the mark on the VR section. In VR games, binaural audio isn't recorded using multiple mics, rather, mono recordings and sound effects are placed in the scene, and the game engine then simulates the binaural (positional) audio perfectly (better than any usb "virtual surround" gaming headset). Using microphone arrays for binaural audio only really makes sense for 360 degree VR videos, but it's not in any way useful for games, which already do the processing themselves.

    • @chris195868
      @chris195868 9 років тому

      Kevin H. "(better than any usb "virtual surround" gaming headset)"
      Probably, but the current tech is also really good for what it does. Currently, Dolby has their Dolby Headphones (also known as Dolby Digital Live), which converts a 5.1 audio signal into a stereo signal using some form of binaural processing. I have a headset with this, and it's surprisingly convincing, good enough that i use it as a daily driver.
      The only difference between Dolby Headphones and the binaural audio you speak of, is the amount of detail present between the 5 channels of audio, including above and below the listener.

    • @holopengin
      @holopengin 9 років тому

      Christoffer Nørskov The problem with surround sound headphones that convert multi channel surround is indeed resolution. I have some surround sound headphones too and they certainly aren't bad, but there's no comparison to actual binaural audio. AMD has an in-engine demos of their TrueAudio for example (and a few games support them if you have the right graphics card). Oculus has their own audio SDK that provides binaural audio simulation to games as well. Hell, a lot of older games had binaural audio, but the SDKs they used depended on old versions of Windows to work.

    • @DavePoo
      @DavePoo 9 років тому

      Kevin H. Agreed, i just posted a comment saying exactly the same thing, then i read yours. All game sound is a mono source and then mixed in 3D to as many channels as desired (ie. Stereo or 5.1 surround).

  • @EinJamaisVu

    Wait why would you record the sound through fake ears? I mean think about it, then you're presenting the sound to actual ears as if it's already been through ears. It's like listening through two ears at once, yours and the fake ones.

    • @CMADE
      @CMADE 9 років тому +2

      CraftSized You can learn everything by reading about binaural audio and our auditory system. But long story short, recorded audio is different than real sound. It doesn't travel through air and isn't arriving from specific angles with tight time differences. You need to record an audio with a fake ear to "embed" needed clues for our brain to decipher.

    Do i activate surround sound on my headphones when using this or keep it in stereo?

  • @retsvus

    You can duplicate the binaural experience with old Polk SRS speakers from the 1980 which I will never relinquish.

    Binaural audio means theres no crosstalk between left and right channels when listening. That's it. Headphones are binaural, a pair of speakers is stereo.

    Not to be confused with "Binaural beats" which seems to be an entirely different pseudoscientific thing that just happens to also use the term binaural.

    No Linus, you can use it on speakers. Just that you have to redo the transfer function again

      Swedaz Allmighty /me jumps on her bike and roars off in the distance and is happy she saved lots of bucks for a virtual experience that won't even come close to the real one.

      Yeah... but what if you dont wanna risk dying on the bike then? XD
      I am just saying how immersive you can make games, such as driving a bugatti at 430 km/h or getting shot in call of dudes, or just immerse yourself in beutiful New Zeeland or something like that.
      Yeah bro, you would totally save money by flying around half the earth instead of spending 1000 bucks or so for that (almost) same thing
