Just a heads up, the "programming software" that is linked on this page is a download for a crypto miner trojan virus. Your antivirus might not immediately pick up on it, but after scanning the download file in Windows Defender it was flagged as a "severe threat" based on that criteria. Fantastic. Just fantastic video. Honestly, I'd been slowed down on installing my two 2520's because of other projects on my plate and with the fact I was manually programming the first unit. This is going to speed up install and make it so much simpler to handle my configs. Thank you, thank you. You sir you are a true treasure.
I made my own programming lead with TTL-USB converter. The issues I find is there is no 8.33 Khz tuning step, the AM demodulation just doesn't seem as good as my FT-70DE handheld. You can't start the scan function without microphone plugged in. I admit, I only bought it for its reasonably good looks and civil airband reception in a compact radio I can screw to a shelf in the shack. But it is cheap and I am fairly happy with it. I would like to get the schematic/circuit diagram so I can possibly improve it. (I did that with another Chinese Baojie BJ-218 radio which is now part of an AllStar Gateway but can double as a APRS/Packet Transceiver by plugging a different lead in the mic and speaker sockets. Like you mention in the video you couldn't get at the 3.5mm socket which is something I would like to do too. In the BJ-218, I changed the socket from a 3.5mm TRS to a TRRS so I could output the recovered COS signalling to the AllStar node.
I have two chinese radios - the Retevis RT95 and more recently the Abbree AR-2520. I just got back into ham radio after years of absence and have found that I have what I think is paging interference at home. The Retevis gets clobbered with interference all over the 2m band and also not quite as badly on 70cm. Unfortunately this opens the squelch and makes the radio unusable for casual monitoring whilst I'm in the shack. The Abbree is only affected by the interference on 2m, which manifests by silencing the stations I am listening to - but, fortunately the squelch doesn't open when monitoring. This seems par for the course - cheap radios! But I don't get any interference on any of my HH transceivers (no matter how cheap) connected to the same antenna. Maybe avoid?
Thanks for the vid and links. Google Drive link is dead. Anyway there is a link on the Banggood page. Right click and save as ... 3.5 mmm socket on the back is indeed for external speaker and working but it does not turn off the internal speaker in mine. I did not manage yet to find a cable to connect radio to my simplex repeater SR112 nor a description of the connectors to solder my own. In Germany it is mandatory to be in a position to turn off your radio from remote locations when running a repeater should things go south. While this is easily done via alexa plug it is impossible to turn on the radio again by reestablishing electric power. Radio has to be turned on with the knob on the front. A bit of a mess.
The banggood listing does not mention the use of the rear 3.5 mm port so I am guessing that like with other radios with unlabled ports it is for factory firmware upload or calibration.
I am having a problem with mine .... it will scan then hit a programmed station and errors reading all zeros ... I remove the error program and scans again then chooses a random one and does the same ... have to remove power as it locks
I have a similar radio where the 3.5mm jack is for programming. Not sure that would be true for the ABBREE since you already have the microphone jack for that.
