There’s been so many conflicts in Ireland it’s hard to keep track. The Easter rising, the Irish war for independence, the Irish civil war, the troubles. I have a friend who’s Irish and these conflicts were like his life, and his history. He does get nervous about some aspects of it, like the red hand symbol, & the IRA. He actually talked about the British doing some racial profiling of his family because they were Irish. Then September 11 happened and they started profiling another group. It’s honestly hard to imagine that such violence occurred in a country that is part of the first world. Great video as always dude!
I'm an Ulster Nationalist. The Red Hand of Ulster is on the Jersey of my county team. Its an Ulster symbol NOT a loyalist symbol. As a kid I crossed the border multiple times a week. Army checkpoints and car searches were 'normal' to us in the 80s.

I don't think it's at all likely that Britain will remain inside the European union and I think a second referendum would be no less divisive than the first, but it's still awful know what might happen in Ulster. Three years ago a great many people decided to put English pride before Irish lives and they'll never understand the consequences of that decision.

Honestly believe that the peasants are always forgotten in the end. Both sides forget that the common man just wants life to be as easy as possible. We are part of EU and Norway isn't, never been an issue crossing between Sweden and Norway, it's just a sign saying you change country and in Norway the paint on the streets is yellow (in Sweden white). It doesn't need to be that hard, I honestly think people exaggerates to make it sound worse. Not as sure on Switzerland, but I know there is tunnels starting in Italy and ending in Switzerland and so I do assume it's close to crossing between Sweden and Norway.

I love the natural beauty, I love the passion of the people, I even love learning to understand the view of the Unionists, whom I respect if not share the opinion of. Some of the most fascinating conversations I have ever had were with Ulster Unionists friends over a pint in the Crown pub of Belfast. I hope the borders of the past, both physical and metaphorical will never ever return. My Unionist friends are of the same mind. Ireland isn't the only place with potential unrest. If Brexit doesn't happen there could well be the same in England and Wales. A referendum happened and as much as the EU hates democracy we cant just undo it, sorry. Also a no deal is the only way this is going to happen. The EU wont accept anything without a mechanism for keeping us in. They should have listened to our concerns and sorted out the free movement issue and this would never have happened.

@@aidanmaxwell4903 Ireland was about to get Home Rule until the radical republicans decided to go down the path of violence and ensure the schism between Unionists in the north became permanent and irreconcilable, the UK was on a path to decentralisation, wheras the EU is only centralising further and further.

The republicans bear as much responsibility for alienating the unionists and dividing Ireland as the other way around.
I agree completely with that last statement that you left off with... these are troubling times, and it feels like everything that we've taken to be normal happenings with regards to world affairs has just been uprooted by everything going on. Whatever happens, I hope that you are not personally affected too much, and that Brexit isn't absolutely detrimental to the economies of the UK and Ireland. I couldn’t imagine a teacher in the classroom being able to inform the students about this subject in a full school term, let alone the time it would take them for their morning break. There’s been so many conflicts in Ireland it’s hard to keep track. The Easter rising, the Irish war for independence, the Irish civil war, the troubles. I have a friend who’s Irish and these conflicts were like his life, and his history. He does get nervous about some aspects of it, like the red hand symbol, & the IRA. He actually talked about the British doing some racial profiling of his family because they were Irish. Then September 11 happened and they started profiling another group. It’s honestly hard to imagine that such violence occurred in a country that is part of the first world. Great video as always dude!
The red hand of ulster definitely does not mean kill Catholics, it comes from the O'Neills coat of arms who were very much Irish

I'm an Ulster Nationalist. The Red Hand of Ulster is on the Jersey of my county team. Its an Ulster symbol NOT a loyalist symbol.
As a kid I crossed the border multiple times a week. Army checkpoints and car searches were 'normal' to us in the 80s.
That's just one century of history. There's 800 years more worth of rebellions and wars against the Normans/English.

English remainer here. I don't think it's at all likely that Britain will remain inside the European union and I think a second referendum would be no less divisive than the first, but it's still awful know what might happen in Ulster. Three years ago a great many people decided to put English pride before Irish lives and they'll never understand the consequences of that decision.

Honestly believe that the peasants are always forgotten in the end. Both sides forget that the common man just wants life to be as easy as possible. Couldnt imagine living in a place where all of a sudden a hard border is placed up. The likes of which Ireland and even Germany/Korea has seen. Whilst Germany/korea are extremist versions of this situation, going from one place to another within youre own shared "homeland" and having to be questioned every step of the way would instill rebellion in anyone after a while.

I respect your view and I too live about 10 minutes from the border in Fermanagh. I voted to leave and I am a unionist. Despite this I do not want a hard border as I know how bad this could become, but at the same time I value the union over the European Union as I believe in the long term that will be best for Britain. Thank you for making these videos despite my disagreements with your point of view as it allows so many more people to get a look at the situation from the perspective of people most directly affected by the vote. @@JohnDRuddyMannyMan As do I, if we all were able to see the perspective of the other side we would all be better for it. Reasonable debate and compromise is the key to solving the worlds issues. This combined with the will of the people in democratic process such as with the brexit refurendum should be the foundation of a stable society and is something that must be promoted and defended from those such as the paramilitaries of old who wish to take it from us.

You mean *between the RoI and the UK 😉 It should be how it was before either state was in the EU.. It’s the EU that’s causing the problem. UK and RoI citizens were free to live and work in each other’s state and they shared a free trade deal before they were in the EU. The RoI’s problem now is that it can not have a trade deal it wants with the UK or ANY state because the RoI is in the EU.

I'm a Swedish bloke, hence I live in Sweden. We are part of EU and Norway isn't, never been an issue crossing between Sweden and Norway, it's just a sign saying you change country and in Norway the paint on the streets is yellow (in Sweden white). It doesn't need to be that hard, I honestly think people exaggerates to make it sound worse. Not as sure on Switzerland, but I know there is tunnels starting in Italy and ending in Switzerland and so I do assume it's close to crossing between Sweden and Norway.

Welcome to the club mate. Am in North Dublin but I love the North. I love the natural beauty, I love the passion of the people, I even love learning to understand the view of the Unionists, whom I respect if not share the opinion of. Some of the most fascinating conversations I have ever had were with Ulster Unionists friends over a pint in the Crown pub of Belfast. I hope the borders of the past, both physical and metaphorical will never ever return. My Unionist friends are of the same mind. We want to have many more mad nights in Belfast and Dublin, not the paranoid suspicion of my parents generation.

Just as an example, Belfast would be the second city of a united Ireland and would benefit from massive investment as Cork city does today. In the UK it seems to be a forgotten or much maligned backwater (No offence). I counted 3 cranes over the skyline the last time I was there, Cork had 15. I can understand the Unionist pride and passion but see little or no love coming from the British mainland.
As a guy from Sourh America were votes tend to be "suggestions", i think that no matter the circumstances brexit should be upheld, you cannot have a referendum and simply ignore it because the results were unexpected. Specially in a country were presedent becomes law, can you imagine the damage to the entire notion of democracy in the UK ignoring it can do?

My mum was watching the Jeremy Vine show (she hates him but she's been watching the program since Matthew Wright), they were debating Brexit and Northern Ireland and there was a caller who honestly said "If you remove the Catholics, Northern Ireland voted for Brexit". There's just one problem, those "Catholics" are BRITISH CITIZENS who had a right to make their voice heard. Like Ruddy, I don't want to see a return to violence in Northern Ireland, but the Tories are in denial about the consequences of their use of extremist language and Labour needs to get its act together.

Ireland isn't the only place with potential unrest. If Brexit doesn't happen there could well be the same in England and Wales. A referendum happened and as much as the EU hates democracy we cant just undo it, sorry. Also a no deal is the only way this is going to happen. The EU wont accept anything without a mechanism for keeping us in. They should have listened to our concerns and sorted out the free movement issue and this would never have happened.

@@Worldschooler To call it genocide isn't exactly accurate - yes, at first glance it can seem like it, and many factors do point to it to the point that many Irish historians have argued quite a bit about this, but frankly "mismanagement" or "neglect" are weirdly the best descriptors, especially due to a mixture of ultra-liberal economic policies (not in the wanky US sense, more as in neo-liberal) and anti-Irish sentiment at the time.
