      I've seen earlier reviews of this case. As an owner of the older quiet Fractal case I'm very intrigued with this one for my next build. I'm very curious as to your opinion on how that wood will hold up. While the black metal case is nowhere near as attractive to their new North Case, it could probably outlive me in longevity. Do you think the wood finish will hold up, or do you see the heat from the case possibly causing the wood to dry and crack over time?

      Great review video as usual but, I'm just little disappointed to see the Arctic Liquid Freezer AIOs as a sponsor, this being that their "repair kit" answer to their bad gaskets is a less than desirable solution for customers who bought a closed loop AIO to avoid draining and cleaning of their cooling solution in the first place :/ Now, whether they're a PC novice or not this IMO was an unacceptable response to "Arctic's defective part" :(

      I think they could've left the option to mount the fans directly to the side panel. That would've reduced costs and maybe gotten some of the clearance issues resolved.
      Also the rear cable management space is just inadequate.
      I think case manufacturers should take a page out of the Antec 1100 case from 2011 or the Phanteks P600A/S and see just how cable management should be designed.

      It’s the most aesthetically pleasing tower case we’ve had on the market for quite a long time. I do like the Lian-Li O11 and if I was having a build where I wanted to show of the internals that would be a solid (if bulky) option. The last case I truly loved was the Silverstone Fortress 2, they really leaned into the brushed Aluminium look that was on point at the time.
      Am due a rebuild at some point to stick in a new PSU so the mesh version of this in white will probably be it, will go nicely with my Sony Inzone screen.

      I love how it gives me the 1970s vibes I grew up in, but 355mm max GPU length is DOA for me as it has no future proofing (heck, there are a couple of models of AIB 4090 that are over 355mm). In 2023 400mm (give or take 5mm) with the front radiator installed is a must.

    Really agree with the verdict that fractal has found a good balance here. I'm not looking for that gaudy gamer look and this hits a good balance between reasonable thermals, acceptable looks and not asking an obtuse price for it. Would be sweet to have more cases like this to have some options but as is this is highly likely the case I'll choose for my next build later this year.

    • @mannydcbianco
      @mannydcbianco Рік тому +5

      Yes, this. I wanted exactly the same; a case that looks classy and fits in well in a home office, isn't tacky or gaudy like most gamer cases, but still offers good airflow for gaming.
      The number one thing I would change for a "2.0" version would be to make the case about an inch to an inch and a half wider. Keep everything else identical, but a bit wider. That would really help with the clearance issues for the side mount fan bracket.

  • @MrAston111
    @MrAston111 Рік тому +305

    This case seems to do great with a vertical GPU mount. Several people who tested it on this case show a 5-9 degree decrease when mounting the gpu vertically. Also, this solves the side bracket for extra fans problem! Having fans blowing right on the GPU only showed a 1-2 degree decrease however, I expected it to be higher. Building in this case with this setup in beginning of march once the case arrives, I'll update you :)

    • @MrAston111
      @MrAston111 Рік тому +12

      To add to your point on "having to mount the radiator up front", a 240 mm radiator on top seems to work fine- even with the arctic liquid freeze 2 240 (However, its a tight fit). A regular thickness rad should give you about 1-2cm clearance which would be fine. Mounting it up front limits GPU length by quite a bit, so u can basically only fit a 4090 if it's a founders edition

    I don’t usually write comments, but this case really got my attention. My home office / desk is in my living room, where I am quite conscious about design choices and really picky with furniture. My desk has been kind of an eyesore (at least to me) for a long time. I try to keep it minimalist and clean, and this case (especially in the white variant) fits right in along my other furniture, which makes me quite excited about a new PC build. It’s overdue by now, though I’m still waiting on new and viable video card options (I don’t game too much, but sometimes still want to). I will probably choose this case for that build - thanks to your review, I feel like this will be a good choice! Excellent combination of both design and function.     I got this case last week, and here are a few comparisons to my experience vs this review;
    - Cable management sucks in the event you have anything that you want to route through the top. There is only one hole near the rear to route things, and getting an AIO and three fans routed through it is a nightmare.
    -The top mount was actively bending as I was screwing the AIO rad in. There were no clearance issues, but it's as if the top is slanted towards the front.
    -As mentioned, the rear is super fragile. It was bent almost immediately to the point where the IO shield wouldn't actually contact the board. It can be bend back, but be careful.
    -My unit did not have a fan hub included.
    -The second HDD tray should honestly be removed from the start, otherwise standard modular PSUs will have a hard time without bending the motherboard cables at a weird angle.

    One suggestion for the series: I would also like to hear some kind of a low'ish load absolute noise test for all of these cases. I feel this performance normalized with noise is slightly at odds with several computer use cases. I use mine for music recording (relatively low load, very low fan rpm, noise critical), media consumption (basically idle) and photogrammetry/ 3D modelling, where I don't really care if it sounds like a jet engine as it's work and I can just exit the room for the day it chugs along. So while noise normalized results give me an idea of how the case performs, I'd really like to see some standardized, noise focused test procedure across all cases for media consumption/ creation scenarios that wouldn't be so heat dependant.

      I have no idea why anyone had wanted to get this thing over the Torrent Compact. The wood? Like I'm from Sweden and yea it is a good looking case and whatever. Torrent is just better. Torrent Compact is really running everything to the limit when it comes to space. But at the end you end up with a compact high end system with just as much of a sharp good look as some wood glued to some plastic. They are about the same size too. Same price.
      Fractal do not just have a good eye at looks. The more important thing is the design and high quality for a reasonable price. And this case? The design is flawed. Torrent got 180mm fans. This wood thing? It got a useless bracket. Wanted Steve to yeet it so badly since the only good thing to say about it was how easy it was to throw away and not feel bad about it.
      Point is. Fractal is not just good ascetically. Before they where very boxy and I ran them without the front cover. It is not the look but the practical aspect too. And this case failed on that front. It only has a extra HDD position over the Torrent. And some wood and leather? Wow.

      To be fair most of limits are drawn from processor and graphics cards thermal and cooler designs, which have slowly been getting more and more thermally intensive for years, and that could be why many cases are similar now with including mesh panels and good airflow. In the future we could also see different power supply designs for conveniences in cable routing and cleanliness in the front, different fan mounting designs as seen here for improved CPU/GPU thermals, and different options for customization like InWin's still-unreleased Mod Free case, where things like hard drives and larger radiator mounts are included only for those who require them, and left out it they don't.
      I get your argument though, it does feel like a lot of cases are similar for what to purchase aside from the obvious differences in cable routing, thermals, and motherboard/GPU/drive bay clearances. But there are still directions for case manufacturers to take in terms of new features to provide.

    I am currently using the black glass side panel version as my Meshify C would not fit my RX 6800 without removing the lower front fan. My only issue with it so far was that my B550 board does not have the smaller-factor header for the front USB-C, so good reminder to always verify things with your manual. Don't be like me - now I need a PCIe adapter...
    Edit: The required internal header for the two USB-A front IO ports is the usual standard size USB header. It's only the USB-C port which requires the newer, smaller version.

    I really love the aesthetic of this case (especially the black+walnut+brass) for a living room VR rig. But I wish they offered a slightly larger version to accommodate (increasingly common) large GPUs without sacrificing the vertical radiator mount or the side-mounted fans. Maybe they could even do a vertical GPU mount in a wider version, so it could suck fresh air through the mesh side panel.

    I love that you show the fitment of radiators in the case. That's one of the hardest things to judge from pictures when deciding what case to get for a custom loop.

    Help me choose. This or the Johnsbo vr4. I want to put in phanteks glacier one 38mm rad 360mm aio phanteks t30 editon with 6 fans do 3 on both sides, and the MSI 4090nliqued with 240 aio and also 4 phanteks t30 fans with 2 on both sides. Which should i choose? Which will have better temps and noise levels? As i see i can put also 1 80mm fan in the fractal under the gpu and also a 120mm next to the motherboard , and if i get another side Fran holder bracket , maybe 4x 140 fans? What do you think? Please help me out. I will use ATX mother , Asus 790 creator wifi, 1300w platinum PSU with zero rpm mode and 94 or 96 percent efficiency. I haven't decided mas e put in 3x22 TB or 18tb drives, but don't know about which are the quietest fastest and most reliable if money no object? Maybe i can use pcie drives as also for the 2.5 ssd-s but for that could you help me what pcie extension would i need? CPU will be 13900ks with themal grizzly contact bracket and condo unit liquid metal as a contact material. Maybe should is repasted and reform the 4090 gpu? Please tell me your opinions. Thanks in advance.

    Given the target market for this case (older, non-gamer aesthetic demographics) Fractal should release an ITX version of this, similar to Torrent Nano. This design + A4-H20's form factor would be perfect.

    I don't really understand why people opt for these compact mid tower cases. Why not spend the extra $20-40 and get a full size mid tower case? In some cases (no pun intended) it isn't even that much difference. The Meshify 2 RGB was going for the same price as this on newegg a while back ($130).
    Don't get me wrong, I am not harshly judging this case in particular. I am a fan of Fractal and have a Meshify 2 RGB myself. I am just confused why you would want a smaller mid tower case. It's generally always compromised in the length department. Considering the ever expanding size of GPUs (plus the stupid new power connector placement) and the cooling requirements of them and the new CPUs; this segment feels extremely limiting.
    And for what? Having it slightly less long will make it fit on your desk somehow better? Or is spending $20 going to make or break your build? A case is like a PSU. If you buy a high quality PSU it can last you for a decade, through many PC upgrades/builds, and so can a high quality case. Spend the extra (if it even is extra), and get a full size mid tower. Then you won't have to worry about fitments, airflow is way better, and you have way more mounting options for fans and/or larger radiators.
    If you really want a small case, this isn't really much of a difference. You'd be better off trying to just go all in and look at mini/micro atx type setups.

    Very interesting case. I would be interested in a physically bigger version, around the size of a P500a, maybe then that side intake idea could work with hardware made in this decade. Another thought, it could probably work very well with a vertical gpu mount if done right

    Anyways, I really don't understand why they didn't do a single full length side-panel, they could've made it like the one on the NZXT H440 (part acrylic, part metal, really sturdy). On that case could've been something like glass, and a stripe of metal on the right-side of the panel or same with mesh on the left...

    Thanks for the review. Just a couple of questions, there is unusually no GPU dedicated charts, is it normal ?
    Why didn't you always show both "North glass" & "North mesh" models on all charts? At least the best version, because the Mesh version seems to underperform in comparison of the Glass one and you don't mention "Mesh" or "Glass" on some graphics, so it's confusing.

    I miss the days when cases had a side panel fan. That actually helped a lot with air flow for the GPU. It is weird that they didn't keep something like that over the years.

    Hey Steve, bit of a noob question here but am I better off putting and AIO cooler on a cpu or on a gpu?
    I want to buy a 4080 or 4090 and potentially a 7000x3d series cpu. I haven't built a pc before so I'm still new to this but it looks like I can only water cool one or the other without building a full custom loop.
    Thank you for your time.

    Finally. I got the same case couple weeks back and was waiting for the review as I saw it in another of your videos.
    Side bracket can ccomodate a 280 AIO as your dear friend from L1 actually showed.
    It off label use but that way you get to mount a bigger AIO and have 2 140 at the top for exhoust. You lose the rear exhaust that way. But the AIO will be intake which is great for temps.
    Case dosent support offically vertical mount but you can use universal one and in that case the side bracket can be used at the bottom place.
    In all cases you loose any visibility to your inned build. But you already got a mesh and not a window so it wont be a problem.
    I do wish they made perforation to the whole PSU shroud so you can add fans for the GPU. And also just made it like coupls cm taller so you can fit a 280 with not RAM limitations.
    Also the perforations on the side bracket are not needed.
    But I love the outside design with the wood. Main thing why I got it and not the almost half the price of a pop air.

    Glad I waited for the Lancool 216 to come back in stock. Building was surprisingly easy and it runs pretty cool. 4080 and the Corsair 12VHPWR cable fit as expected. Great to see it topping the charts too.

    Is it possible to do a test with fan bracket in the highest position used for 280mm AIO (intake)? I would like to see how this performs since both CPU and GPU should be getting fresh air. Unfortunately I haven't seen any thermal tests with this setup.

March to 31. May. Why all this advertisement and reviews for a case which is not available for months (reviews already started 2 montsh ago)?

    You know maybe they where thinking that if you are using something like an AIO water cooling or some other water cooling set up you could use these extra fan mounts to actually cool the VRM, Ram and other motherboard components possibly. Or maybe they where thinking if you have some GPU that is smaller or has a worse cooling solution like some of the single fan 30 series GPUs that this extra air flow from the two side fans might actually help to cool those smaller GPUs better or something along those lines 🤷‍♂. I mean it doesn't hurt and I really like to see then innovating and making something different for us to chose because that means that there will be new designs and new styles other than a black box with mesh front and the same internals... But yea idk it is a weird choice that they didn't make the case large enough to fit normal large air coolers and larger GPUs because that would have been a nice thing if your GPU was running hot or you planned on over clocking or something like that you could pump more air in the side to keep them cool if only it would actually fit with modern card and tower coolers lol

I don't see it listed or mentioned and this was the part I was most curious about. How much louder is the mesh in comparison to the glass?

    So, basically, to fix the GPU compatibility issue, the case needs to be 25mm wider. Fractal made a boo boo and designed the case with last gen hardware in mind. Too bad, it looks nice, but I will be going with the Torrent instead.

    I'll be running the side fans over the cpu with an aio just to create air flow. The fronts getting a 360mm rad so there won't be any airflow from the front. With the two front fans on the top in a pull configuration and a rear 120 on pull ill get to run all the fans on 50% and improve thier lifespan and noise while maintaining good temperatures. Should help vent the hot air rising from the 7900xtx going in it.
