I have a different idea what ingenious means. Guys that take us to the moon or invent LEDs and micro chips. Those guys are ingenious. I’m just a backyard mechanic that figures out little fixes and shares them with others. I am happy though with this fix.
Tad, I felt it was too nice a reel to let die a parts reel death. I spent a fair amount of time pondering how to make this work. I almost gave it back to be sold for parts. It still might be worth more in parts than as a whole reel.
Excellent, I'm sure most of these mass production reels probably have a ton of interchangeable parts due to manufacturing costs. That would be my guess. Great job.
That’s what I was thinking. They can use the same mold press to make the spools but put different finishes on them. I was excited to see the line roller part on that bail wire though. I didn’t expect to find that.
Another great video! Thanks to this video I was able to go and find spare spools for my old Spheros 6000 FA at a reasonable price. If you need a spare spool for your 6000 Spheros FA and dont need sealed drag, look for the Sahara 6000 FA spool. Less than $8 a piece vs $60+ Spheros FA spool.
Sometimes it’s the smallest bits of information that come in the handiest. I’m glad I was able to supply you with info you could use. Now maybe your info will assist someone else. Thanks
The way this reel comes apart is very similar to a Shimano Sedona and Sonora. I own them both but not a Spheros. I don’t remember if my Sedona and Sonora had two or three ball bearings (other than the AR clutch bearing). I like this reel. You know if my two reels have a bushing that can be replaced by a bearing I’ll have to check on this. I have put extra bearings in many reels especially Daiwa reels. This Spheros has some beautiful gears in it. It depends on the reel as to whether I grease it or oil the axle shaft. If I grease it I just put a tiny bit on my index finger and spread the finest coating possible on that axle shaft. I Don’t want to see almost any grease or streaks. You know Rick, I like an AR clutch bearing like this much more than those smaller always on AR clutch bearings. I will not own a reel that has no AR override! I don’t have the vision to do a lot of those very fine Drexel tool and drill fixes you do. Do you have any idea how many rotor bail arms and springs and bail trip levers that are probably still dirty in my 300+ spinning reels? It’s a lot because I don’t mess with them unless they feel gritty or are hesitant with a slow snap. If none of those conditions are present I LEAVE THEM ALONE! I don’t want to invite trouble. You know I tend to be a purist about all the parts, decals, labels, etc. on the reels in my collection but I’ll bet you 90% of so-called strict collectors would not spot the fact that your spool is not original to this reel. It says Shimano, it says 5000, and it’s the correct color - that’s good enough for me1 I got in a Daiwa 7850HRL reel today that was missing both the earred drag washer and the retention spring for the drag stack. I’ve got to find an eared washer. You can do without that spring but not that earned washer! You did an outstanding job creatively repairing and servicing this Speros. I know I would be happy to have it! - Chris (PS. Was this comment long enough for you? 😊)
Chris, I hope this comment finds you feeling better. I like the way this reel comes apart but it took me getting it apart to see that I did it the hard way. The side plate body would have come right off without taking the rotor off first. That would have greatly simplified things. If I were going to keep this reel I would probably go ahead and order the sealed bearings and replace them all. Not because they need replacing but because I could. You are correct that the gears are very nice. Shimano used to advertise these reels as having “Fluiddrive 2 gear system”. It’s on the side of the reel rotor but I’ve been unable to find any info describing what that actually is. The best I can figure is that it was some type of grease they used. I’m about two weeks away from making my final call on greasing or oiling my axle shafts. I have an ABU Garcia Cardinal 556 that was one of my first reels to service. Back then I was greasing all axle shafts. I have noticed that it takes a lot more effort to wind it in. I’m going to bring it in and service it with oil on the axle shaft and see how much of a performance improvement I get. I’m starting to think I might like this design of AR clutch the best as well. I just don’t want to take one apart again. I’ve had to step up my amplification of my glasses too. I they aren’t as high as yours by any means, but they are much stronger than they used to be. That being said, I still enjoy taking the bail wires off. I just purchase about 20 different sizes of spring wire. I’m going to start working on making jigs to make reels springs. I hate the idea of having a reel I can’t fix due to broken springs that are not available.
Thanks for the vid. You helped me fix my Frankenstein 5000FA!
That was ingenious, Rick!

Very ingenious how you repaired this reel!

IT’S ALIVE!!! 😂 Very nice job. Thanks Rick.
I realize they don’t really come to life like Toy Story toys but it makes me happy to give them another shot at it.

The same year saragosa spool would fit
It’s been Rickensteined!
But it’s still a good reel Rick.
Mario, I’m afraid that’s true but at least it can go fishing again. 😀
@@youngmartinsreels5314 yes it can!👍
Did you salvage the 20# test you took off of that other reel ?
So far, it’s still installed on the spare spool. I don’t know if I’ll ever use it though. I’m not very fond of monofilament line over 15 pound test.
