In my experience, tin whistle is also the most ADHD-friendly instrument I've ever came across.
I've had a guitar and a keyboard, but none of those stuck with me, leaving me with a great sense of shame about the investment my parents had made. But with the tin whistle, I bought it impulsively (as a good ADHDer does) because it was nice and cheap. Truth is, I barely even tried playing it for YEARS. But it was so small and cheap that I didn't feel bad and every time I moved, I brought it with me (unlike the guitar and piano that still gather dust at my parents' house). Then a year or two ago, I looked at it and it was just there waiting for me.
As you said, it easy to start learning. It feels rewarding right away, if I start with an easy tune. It's challenging as I slowly try faster songs or adding ornaments, keeping it interesting. It trains everything that my ADHD brain lacks: memory, focus, patience, coordination. Its simplicity also helps clear my running-multiple-thoughts-all-the-time mind: no chords, only one note after the other. Still, it is surprisingly versatile. It requires almost no planning to play or practice: I grab my whistle, I open a tab, I play. No setting up, no tuning, no nothing. When I play poorly, it doesn't make me sad, it makes me burst out laughing. If I don't have time to practice, I don't feel bad because I didn't spend a lot of money on it and I know it's easy to pick it up again. Pretty much the most straightforward, fun, guilt-free, accessible, interesting instrument I know of.

The breath of life ; Living with chronic depression I was surprised to discover how taking up the whistle shifted the mood, furthermore after a lifetime of wanting to play a musical instrument but possessing large amounts of negativity, I find the whistle is the first instrument I have actually stuck with. Oh yeah and I do observe a spiritual element in playing the thing.

I chose to play tin whistle because I’ve always been drawn to the sound. Growing up I learned to play piano, which I loved, but when I moved out of my parents house I was no longer able to play. Turns out pianos are huge and incredibly hard to move. Keyboards never did it the same for me, there’s something irreplaceable about an actual piano.
So! Now that I’m playing the tin whistle, I love how incredibly portable it is!!! I can take it anywhere. I love that. I also have realized that having to learn breath control has helped with singing!

I am 72, long time whistle player, and I take a walk with my G whistle on the bikeway behind the mall along the railway (so absolutely no way am I disturbing anyone). Walking not only sets the tempo, but the breath control necessary while exercising is a whole 'nuther level of mental AND physical activity. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Cutie pie is absolutely right!

Whistle helps me a lot to relax my brain. Playing an instrument is a completely different and new way of thinking for me. There are fewer negative thoughts and instead of them there are now various melodies. Now I listen to music differently, I have learned to hear and analyze it! I'm happy that I started playing the whistle! Thanks for your lessons!

I think I wanted to learn how to play penny whistle when I heard that solo on Paul Simon's "You can call me Al" - but I'm nowhere near there yet!! :) I would never have dared to try an instrument that was expensive and required serious commitment in finding a teacher, etc. So tin whistle for me has opened up the possibility of making music in general.

Mental #4 is certainly true. I battle mild to crushing depression and notice when I practice and when some tunes start coming together, I feel some uplift. The difficulty is being depressed kills my enthusiasm to practice and a cycle of, I feel down so don't practice, I don't practice so I feel down.... begins and is hard to disrupt.

A great video. I picked up the tin whistle ' because of Irish musician Vinnie Kilduff. He had such skill' that I went out and bought a Clarks tin Whistle. I got a video he made' and imitated everything he did. It is a harder instrument to master ' more than any other one.

I had started out attempting to play a replica Shakuhachi zen flute and while I found the experience to be rewarding, family and friends would routinely ask what songs I could play to which I was forced to respond that there were none, at least none they would be familiar with. So after considering switching to some other instrument, I just wanted you to know that you were very inspirational to me and while I did not choose the tin whistle, I have chosen the Irish flute in low D which has the same fingering, so all the whistle tabs apply. I cannot thank you enough for all your content, encouragement and enthusiasm for flute playing and music. It's very rewarding when I play something from the tabs and my son or friends actually recognize the music. I've a long road ahead as far as my playing ability is concerned but the rewards are already coming! Thanks again.

An amusing anecdote: I went to Japan in July of 1975, and one of the first things I did was buy a Shakuhachi practice flute (I played the recorder), but could not get it to produce any sound at all resembling a musical note. "Perhaps I have a defective shakuhachi" I pondered, and it being Obon season, and the shakuhachi being a regular instrument at Obon dances, I figured I would take my instrument to a Bon-odori and armed with the phrase "Shakuhachi wo fukimasu ka?" (Do you play the shakuhachi), I was determined to find a shakuhachi player who could tell me if my instrument worked or not. Now, I was new at the Japanese language, but I knew enough to know my question was understood, but I was not prepared for the responses. I would walk up to a group of Japanese (fortunately, I was aware that there were few female shakuhachi players, so no need to ask), show them my flute, ask my question, and then be regaled with laughter, which seemed to be covering embarrassment. It happened again and again, but finally, with the cajoling of his friends, one gentleman sheepishly took my cheap shakuhachi and produced some beautiful notes from it. "Well, I know it's not the shakuhachi." I thanked him, enjoyed the fireworks, and did eventually manage to "Shakuhachi wo fukimasu". [The amusing part] I later related this story to a Japanese friend and he roared with laughter, and then explained that the verb used for "to play" means "to blow" and shakuhachi is a unit of length, One shaku (about a foot long) and eight sun (ten sun to the shaku), so I walked around a festival asking men if they could blow 18 inches, which is slang for, what you would expect it to be.

Gotta say, perfect analysis. I picked the tin whistle up 'cause it's a cool sounding instrument. Next because I wanted to just learn more music stuff in general(never grew up in a musical family or anything, but it's definitely easy for just... learning music, in my opinion, and I live in a town that I'm not able to get someone for lessons for any instruments). Can't say I'm good at any songs at all(couple tunes I feel I'm okay with at the least), but I'll say, playing one(even poorly) I can just sorta... relax and chill for a good bit of time, even if I just play a few random notes that I feel sound good to me for a few minutes.

As you mentioned most of the songs one likes can be played on a tin whistle. For me that is a mix of Celtic music, folk, pop, hymns and classic. So nice that you supply us with the tabs of so many songs, thanks.

I have started to play tin whistle one year ago cause i wanted to learn some French folk songs that I liked. I couldn't do it at the begin, so I learnt first the easiest tunes that I found on UA-cam, like British grenadiers. Then I improved my abilities and I learnt a fig for a kiss and dixieland. I discovered that tin whistle is much used also in East European music and I learnt some songs from there. I like tin whistle because you can play almost any songs from folk to modern pop music and also I find it relaxing to play. Aniway now I learnt to play the French song because of I started (aupres de ma blonde)

I'm a little late to this video so I don't know if anyone will see this comment. As someone who picked up the tin whistle after brain surgery I can say it really helped. I have no objective data showing my recovery was enhanced by playing but what I can say is it truly helped my mood. Having had a chunk of my right hippocampus removed I dealt with depression and sadness as that part of the brain is heavily involved in those emotions. So watching whistle videos and listening to great music gave me something to look forward to everyday. Due to my condition dexterity has been an issue so learning the fingering has helped that improve. Stephanie and another channel focused on whistling let me spend time with lovely encouraging people who had a positive impact during dark and trying days. Thank you so much Stephanie. You have a lovely channel here, thank you. I would like to make an observation. As you will know, musicians are "programmed" to listen to music. This has it's own problems, it's well known that if music is playing in the background, say in a pub, cafe, or a tutorial, musicians have trouble blocking it out. This gets in the way of concentrating on what people are saying. I'm a multi instrumentalist and singer. and have been performing professional, solo and ensemble gigs for 55 years. I can't focus and what you are saying in this video without a lot of work. The background music is too loud, it's repetitive and sticks in the mind. It sounds a little like random playing up and down scales, a rising and falling sound which soon became incredibly irritating. You are passionate in your videos and do speak rather quickly, sadly the music is fighting your words and winning. I had to stop watching it three minutes in, I was getting very tense. It’s a shame, I’m not trying to upset you, it’s more a plea for, not silence, but speech without background distractions. We don’t need muzak with everything we watch. Thank you and keep up the good work.
