    I do feel a bit sorry for her. She didn't even want to marry into the royal family as a princess, but eventually accepted because she loved George, and then Edward abdicates and drops the crown in her family's lap, so she buckles down and dedicates herself to it because what other choice is there... and then after it all, she gets chucked out.
    That's got to hurt a bit.

    I have always abhorred her character.
    "A girl who was totally uneqipped for it"?
    Ma'm that's your daughter, and for better or worse, the Crown sits on her head, if she was uneqipped to take it on, that's a reflection on your thoroughness as a mother to a possible heir to the most powerful throne in Europe.
    And to all those who would say "yeah, but she was never meant to take the throne", to you, I say balderdash. A thousand years of English history should have made it obvious that unexpected, sudden, and precipitous rises to power, by unsuspecting individuals, due to the death or abdication of the sitting Monarch, is practically a national tradition.

    • @terminallumbago6465
      @terminallumbago6465 3 роки тому +5

      She was always meant to take the throne. Regardless of whether or Edward VIII had abdicated, Elizabeth would have been Queen eventually because Edward VIII had no heirs. Had Edward VIII stayed on the throne, Elizabeth would have been third in line until 1952, and then second in line until Edward VIII’s death in 1972. Obviously things played out the way they did and she became Queen in 1952.
      As for being unprepared for the role, she had been preparing for the role since her childhood. Her father, King George VI, had educated her about the responsibilities of the job, even showing her the red boxes. This ramped up as his health began to fail and she even started undertaking engagements on his behalf (including the trip to Africa that she was on when he passed away).
      This was just jealousy on the Queen Mother’s part, which according to a documentary I saw, was true. She had her day in the sun and wasn’t ready to give it up. She did not want to step aside for her daughter, even to the point of staying in Buckingham Palace for quite a while and trying to exert her influence even after Elizabeth II had became Queen. This was particularly true where the coronation was concerned, which was the focus of the documentary I watched.

    Everyone can bash her for being richer and more well known than they are, but I adore her. She was a good mother, a good wife, and a good Queen. It’s not like she burned hundreds of Christians alive because they wouldn’t convert to Catholicism yet it seems like more people have something bad to say about the Queen Mother Elizabeth than Bloody Mary..

    After reading multiple biographies of the Queen Mother (including the authorized one, written by William Shawcross), I am convinced that a scene such as this never would have happened. If you want an accurate account of these people’s lives a tv show is not the source, it’s entertainment. Go watch a documentary or go to Buckingham or Kensington Palace. Everything on this show is not real but they have done research and have accounts of former servants, friends of royals most notably ladies in waiting of Princess Maragaret and of course Lady Di’s own account. While many of us know the royal family rarely shows emotion in public there have been times they broke in public like the Queen after Margaret’s funeral. No one is made of steel 24/7 and in private I don’t think it would be odd or unrealistic to see someone grieve or get sad over the loss of their husband.

    Wow, so many people are judging her but she was the first non royal to be married into the royal family in over 400 years. Her family didn’t have any nobility, she was middle class all the way. She started out as a very inquisitive common girl who loved learning. Elizabeth and George would have never encountered each other if not for George’s secretary (who I believe was seeing Elizabeth at the time) introduced “the girl he was seeing” to George- who eventually became King when his brother abdicated the Throne after their father, King Edward VII died in 1910, 9 years after their Grandmother Queen Victoria died.
    I don’t know if middle class is considered bottom, but she started low and went high, and then went back to low. That would suck for anyone. It’s like a poor person winning the lottery, and then losing it all because their loved one died. She did lose a lot, she lost a lot of blessings and a husband at the same time. That would be very difficult, like she says lol

      Are you American? She was from Scottish aristocracy and from a very wealthy family. She actually kicked up a massive fuss and absolutely refused to leave the palace, it's not like she wasn't given a massive mansion to live in, she just wanted power. Also she spent a fortune on clothes and frivolities at a time when England could not afford it, e.g. she got about 17,000 more coupons as a normal person during the war, including when the rest of royal family stuck to rationed clothes, simply because she believed as Queen she must always be the best dressed. She died bankrupt (she had the most amazing over the top lavish parties, she also bought art but often "forgot" to pay though). She had a yearly stipend of about a million but over spent it every year and the present Queen silently repaid all her creditors to an amount in the millions, probably with tax payer funding, it wasn't known till after her death. Many of her financial advisers actually got ill and died early from the sheer stress of her excessive spending, I think a bank also refused to give her an OD at one point. Also she actively helped Charles cheat on Diana and was a notorious racist and many more. Don't get me wrong, she was of enormous help to her husband but she was an extremely flawed person, The Crown was very kind. But I just don't really have any sympathy for at all.
