The second race track special comes in c. 15:40. It certainly was moving, but I can't detect any audible exhaust. The engineman (actual PRR job title, BTW) probably had a good swing on the train and was racing down the grade at the speed limit with an only slightly cracked drifting throttle setting. As for the speed, IIRC, the NY&LB had automatic train control that limited trains to 60 mph. (Corrections welcome from "Long Branch" experts if I'm wrong). The P-RSL lines in South Jersey out of Philly and Camden did not have this restrictive system so passenger trains could still really romp and stomp down there.
@@howiesmith1504 Yeah that sure sounded like more than a mile a minute pace. Afa the speed limit, I know here on the old Fort Wayne Div crews often exceeded, or more like obliterated, the posted max speed when running late. The Long Branch I doubt was any different where track condition allowed. Anyhow, thanks for your reply, it's certainly a great recording.
That k4 headed 2nd section of the Race Track Special was MOVING! Had to be doing 85-90 mph easy!

Definitely not doing 80. Exhaust frequency is too slow for that to be true. Sounds more like 55 or 60.
Love it! 🥰😍😎
