    Chas is full of great information based on lots of experience. This is one of the best (if not the best) introduction to fixie riding I've seen. This one video containts more information than years of Wabi cycling videos... Really great video, and good luck Jeff (you'll need it!)

    I just rode my State Bicycle fixie to pick up something from the store the other day. I was coming home a little warmed up and took the last couple of corners at speed. The last right hand turn felt like a pedal strike looming, so I "stopped pedaling." The rear end bucked and reminded me that fixie's are a different animal of bike. Good luck!

    Yesss! All the fixed gear goons approve. And no worries. Me and my friends raced a whole season of fixed gear races and nobody clipped a pedal in the corner eventhough we average 45kmh in a race.
    But ye, karting courses are more tricky, but clipping your pedal will be harder than just sliding out.

    This is going to be great and can't wait to see it! Fixed crits - pedals: speedplay, because they are the easiest to get in and are narrow, Tires: Veloflex Corsa 30's clinchers with latex tubes, beautiful, supple ride and light. Good luck and can't wait to see it!

  • @normativesymbiosis3242
    @normativesymbiosis3242 2 роки тому +2

    Fantastic, looking so much to seeing this with your usual tactics commentary!
    Some additional minor points:
    - Try 165mm cranks if you have them available for that couple extra mm's of pedal clearance
    - Consider setting the saddle a bit lower than you usually do on a road bike - this is just to make sure you won't accidentally lock up you knee in extended position
    - Chain tension: make it tight to prevent chain drops, but leave bit of slack so that it spins freely and does not bind
    - Try to use your core and arms when slowing down - where you would pull on handlebars when sprinting, try pushing instead

      All of this applies to street racing and alleycats but his 46/18 gearing for this makes me think this totally different

    Ok so heres how I feel. Been watching your vids for years. I love them. I am a non competitive mountain biker but I enjoy riding with speed and exercising technical ability. I ride a rigid single speed Surly Lowside with 3" tires. This dude is awesome. Everything he's saying is exactly what I say to people about mtb. You want that high bb to pedal over the chunk and the widest tires you can get to maximize floatation and cornering. Great video. This guy definitely understands his sport very well.

      This is not track racing. The events are not held on a velodrome, and the skills are completely different. Go to a track and try to ride around it, and you'll experience the difference. Both activities are great, but like chalk and cheese.

    10:55 is it me or does the MTB pedal look like it could actually be wider than the road pedal? The road pedal has more height, especially closer to the outside, so maybe that's where the math comes in. Chas has some nice pro tips, great vid

  • @jamese4729
    @jamese4729 2 роки тому

    Jeff, a thing to consider would be Crankbrothers Candy or Eggbeater pedals. 4 possible clip points instead of two, so a bit easier to get into than SPD or SPD SL pedals. You need different cleats to adjust the release, rather than a screw, though.

    Be careful out there Jeff! I’ve seen more than one amazing roadie have a momentary lapse of concentration and try to stand up on a fast moving fixie (to shake out the legs) and the self inflicted crashes were brutal.

    Hi Jeff, I didn't fully get the foot in the back wheel brake idea. Does he realise the cranks are still turning! If you need to slow down and you are unclipped you are in collarbone #2 territory...My 21 tips are : ensure the chain tension is TIGHT. Any slack will feel like whiplash when you try to pedal backwards otherwise. Second tip (you probably know) if your legs are at much greater risk of breakage unclipped so when it gets squeaky try to hard wire yourself to stay onboard- same goes for your arms. Finally I would wear two pairs of thin lycra armwarmers and full finger gloves. Not so much for the reduced damage than the fact it will make you braver. Used to work for me racing big nat tours in the wet. I also used to listen to Blondies "Die young, stay pretty" but maybe that was just me :) Good luck!
