  • This is the fascinating history of the 1960 Edsel. 1 of only 2,864 1960 Edsel’s ever made and 1 of 275 two door sedan owned by Andrea 'Enthal since new, originally purchased by her father on the day Ford motors discontinued the mark. She was there as a child and recounts her family’s trip to the dealership and it’s long road here. Andrea has driven her Edsel Ranger over 400,000 miles, repeatedly crisscrossing the United States, as recently as 2007. Her story and history of her 1960 Edsel is as fascinating as the history of the mark itself. In this video Andrea goes into detail on the short life of the Edsel motorcar which only lasted three model years. She explains what caused the company’s demise and why only 2,864 1960 models were made and how the 1960 was discontinued after only one month.

Aw shucks, guys. There are bigger experts in the world of Edsels than me. I learned a lot of what I know from them. But I probably am the youngest a person can be to have any memory of them being sold as new cars. As for you, 8avexp, if the Edsel was discontinued on your third birthday, you were born on November 19, 1956. That is the day the Edsel dealership contracts were signed, which is WHY they were discontinued on November 19, 1959. So, you are truly an Edsel baby. You just never knew your actual birth date had a meaning in automotive history. --Andrea 'Enthal

I agree, the best car story I have ever heard! I don't know how any other car story could top it?
This story needs to get more traction out there in the car community. The owner and the car seem to be both well deserving of some assistance with the cosmetic work that needs to be done. I get the sense that the owner might not have the financial resources to spare on the work that has to be done. However I think that if the right people in the car enthusiasts community see this story ,they would be honored to donate some of the time and materials needed to ensure that it is properly restored. I sincerely hope that the car gets the cosmetic work done that it needs and the "little girl" gets to enjoy the results. They both deserve it!

Andrea was a bus driver for the school where I taught. One day we had an event that required teachers to park off campus. Andrea shuttled teachers from the residential areas where we parked back to campus that day. At that time, I drove a fire engine red '60 Buick. When I boarded, she said, "I see you like classic cars." I said that I did and that my dream car would someday be a '60 Edsel. I had no idea she owned one when I said this. I was floored when she told me that she owned one. What were the odds? Hers was the first '60 Edsel I'd ever actually seen. Before that day, I'd only seen them in photographs. BTW: It looks like Andrea's father got the deluxe interior upholstery vs. the standard. I can't wait to see the cosmetic restoration.

Hi from Sydney, Australia. This has been one of the best youtube videos I have ever seen. So GOOD that after just watching it once, I immediately re watched the entire video a second time Andrea is a true marvel, an expert on her beloved car. Good on you Andrea for loving it and keeping it all these years it takes dedication and passion like your 18 year hunt for the side light lens, made more impressive because you are a girl in what is mostly a male hobby. It would/will be really kool to see it all repainted and factory fresh on a later video. I loved the family story too !!
I'm of the same age as Andrea & I would have loved to have kept my mum's beloved Jaguar mk10 from the same time zone, however a drunk and drugged driver in a truck wrecked it when it was almost 30 years old. However in September 1982 I bought off its 83-year-old stroke victim owner a rare right-hand drive 1974 Cadillac Fleetwood Talisman. I have used it also as my daily drive for 3 months off 41 years, it still looks like it's new, sable black paint & mustard color interior. It has also been well loved and serviced, we have kilometres here in Australia, we switched over in '74 the year my car was built, when I bought it as an 8yr old car it had 102,700k's on it today in 2023 it's showing 705,000kilometres, so that's around 445,000miles. Specification for the CKD car Kits to shipped here to build an export spec car feature a full power engine with zero anti pollution power sapping devices giving the cars better gas mileage and way more torque, so no need to down shift to second gear and waste fuel, also a two metre wide of 80 inch car.
Re the cancellation of the Edsel brand. The new corporate boss of Ford Robert McNamara took one look & wanted it canned immediately. He just hated big cars and was really behind the push to create a new market segment a new middle size between the compact Falcon and full-size Fairlane/Galaxie body. Hence the downsizing of the Fairlane in 1962.
Re the wide body. For 1962 the Fairlane/Galaxie body was very cleverly re skinned, giving it a whole new look, so it has a striking family resemblance to its sibling the Falcon. During the extensive re-skin there was some width removed making it just a shade more narrow.
Re the unusual taillight lens. There was of course to be an Edsel Comet, Falcon like product, which quickly became the Mercury Comet and the red plastic lens is a shared item on that early Comet with the odd side canted fins on the rear panel/mudguards. Here in Australia our right-hand drive 1964 Ford Galaxies used the 1959 Edsel gauges and instrument pod, same exactly just on the opposite side of the car dashboard, same knobs, switches, layout, steering wheel & horn ring, only difference is the plastic centre of wheel finish piece. A year later for 1965 Aussie Galaxies in right hand drive guise used the beautiful and elaborate 1961 to 63 Lincoln Continental drivers dash pod in complete entirety gauges, radio, HVAC switch unit, knobs etc , even down to the window cranks if you were miserly & wanted manual cranks in your Lincoln.

The 1960 and 1961 Comet rear tail lens is 9 inches long. The 1960 Edsel lens is 7 inches long. They share an aesthetic theme, but the two cars can not share actual parts.
And yes, the US cars sent to Australia came out of Canada, and have many interesting mix and match parts that are different from their US counterparts. Way fun to look at an Aussie FoMoCo product and figure out what year it is.

One question does it have a name???

    • @AndreaEnthal
      @AndreaEnthal Рік тому +1

Yes, karltork6040, my Edsel has a "name." But it isn't a human or pet name. It is what Ford Motor Company named it before it was born. They created a spreadsheet for 3,200 1960 Edsels before they built any. I could go into what 0U11W702084 means in detail (zero is the 1960 model year, U is the Louisville KY assembly plant, 11 is a two door sedan, etc. Each digit means something) and the last 4 digits are consecutively, which Edsel each one would be. So, the name of my specific car is 2084 (said two-oh-eight-four).
Only 2,846 of the 3,200 were built. But that name is what my insurance company calls my car, what the states register them under, and so, the real name of my car. --Andrea 'Enthal

A few things to note here:
1…In 1975, the movie “Crazy Mama“ came out. It showed not one, but TWO 1960 Edsels being damaged in car chases. Though they were only 15 years old at the time, and therefore were hardly vintage classics, at 2846 units produced, they were rare when they were new!
2…Keep this UA-cam video online forever! As Andrea’s 1960 Edsel probably has had its life story more well publicized than any other Edsel!

I will drive the wheels off my car and I will never pay sticker price for any car. Best of all you had a Pinto. I love Pintos and I've owned two 1972 Pintos. Was curious about the A/C. Saw the factory unit with a later model compressor. I prefer factory parts like you. Keeping the originality. Also the fact that you drive this car cross country makes you a very special person. The transplanted factory air in my Edsel was a major project, taking many years to finally get right. Started with an entire parts car with factory air that was towed to my mechanic, so he could harvest every part needed. Most of those parts did not actually work, including the compressor that you accurately note is not the same model (or manufacturer) as the factory supplied. A custom radiator (in a 100% stock shell) was also built to allow the car to cool itself while cooling me. The heater core is also different for a factory air car. Of course the heater core in the donor car was rusted out, so had to be taken to a radiator shop, for recore-ing. The donor car had only half of its fan shroud, and I had to find the other half somewhere. Non-AC Edsels had no fan shroud at all.
And all of this had to be done over 12 days in June/July 2007 because I was taking the car on a 28 day, 10,000 mile cross country trip, starting day 12.
So, the factory air in it is authentic, down to the R22 freon it uses, but completely refurbished. --Andrea 'Enthal

@user-wo9bl2jk2f I would like to attend the Edsel meet in Los Angeles. I've looked, but I don't see any. I had a great uncle who had eleven Edsels, so I have a soft spot for these rare beauties. I have noticed that in my travels along Route 66, their seems to be an abundance of 1958/59 Edsels. There is a place in Shamrock, Texas, that has at least 20 Edsels. I'm not sure if it is a wrecking yard or someone's huge collection of cars. I've seen many others as well in yards between California and Oklahoma..

There will be 5 days of Edsel owners there, starting on Tuesday of that week.
The Edsel collection in Shamrock Texas belongs/belonged to Shelly Cleaver. I would call it a private parts yard. He sold parts from those cars, and also chose some to fix up. So it is both a collection and parts donor yard (not WRECKING yard!) --Andrea 'Enthal

Always thought the 60 Ford was one of the best looking Fords before or since until 1972, wondered why the style didnt stick around a few years. This is the story I always thought it was. That Henry Ford's son Edsel, designed his own car, Henry let him name it after himself, or did that for him. That the Edsel was a car model under the Ford brand and that it was a failure and embarrassment to the company and family. Where that idea got into my head, I have no idea. [They didn't publicize their intentions much, but likely the Ford Motor Company envisioned having a 5-car line-up --- Ford/Mercury/Edsel/Lincoln/Continental --- to compete with the 5-car line-up of General Motors (Chevrolet/Pontiac/Oldsmobile/Buick/Cadillac), and the 5-car line-up of Chrysler -- Plymouth/Dodge/Desoto/Chrysler/Imperial.]

Shes very close in explaining the reason for the development of the Edsel. In late 40s, early 50's for GM there was the mid line Buick and Oldsmobile, and for Chrysler, the DeSoto. These served between Chevrolet /Pontiac and Plymouth /Dodge and Cadillac and Chrysler of high line. FMC had a gap between Ford and Mercury that Edsel brand was designed to fill. Unfortunately Ford took too long to bring to market, so by late 50s, markets had merged and Edsel was no longer needed. Also only car in 1958 (Eisenhower Recession) to increase sales was 1958 Tbird, proving move from sports car to personal luxury market was right move. Edsel was too late to the party.

    Chevrolet - Ford - Plymouth
    Pontiac - - Dodge
    Buick - Mercury - DeSoto
    Oldsmobile - Edsel - Chrysler
    Cadillac - Lincoln - Imperial
Edsel should have tried to fill the void around the Pontiac/Dodge price range. What's curious is that, had Edsel continued; they were going to give it a Falcon body and Edsel would have had the most expensive, small car on the market. They had styling bucks and possibly even test mules built, but everything came to a halt in November when the entire line was cancelled.

It had 72k original miles on it as the previous owner hadn't driven it for years at that point. We checked the engine out, a 312cid V8 and it still had +or- 1/4 lb of having 120 lbs of compression on each cylinder. It had been undercoated when it was new and it had had vinyl seat covers put on it new as well so the interior was still in like new condition and the undercarriage was still basically new as well. The paint of the exterior was faded and needed replacing. Uncle bought it in Louisville, KY in 1982 so it had never been more than a few miles from where it was built. I lived just south of Louisville when I was a kid, but we lived on a farm in Southern Indiana by the time I was 12 in 1980 and it became my car when I turned 18 in 1986. I wish to God I had kept it but I sold it to another Uncle in 1992 who lived in Detroit. He restored it a 2nd time and ended up donating it to a charity for auction.

Hi, I write from the far city of Santiago, Chile SouthAmerica. Well, super interesting this story about 1960 Edsel coupe. From my point of view, it looks like a Mercury, maybe. It looks simple, not ellegant as the brand wanted to sell previously, it is ending 50s models. For example glasses are not greenish tone, they are clear like a shipper version, and early 60s era the fenders design and tyre size are to much small for the proportions of a car. It remindes me Huckelberry Hound's police car, in other words this car is mmm... ugly is the word.🙈 Sorry! 1964 American cars had best robust designes for me, more logical -and less marihuana effects of designers early 60s.- 🙊 Kisses and hugs.

What a great history of a fabled failure! Even as a little baby boomer, I remember these cars being a real trip. A neighbor family had a "58 station wagon that I can still "see" sitting in their driveway or riding in the back. The luster faded quickly as the whole neighborhood watched, in perhaps self-satisfied astonishment, as the wagon sadly deteriorated....quickly. Thanks for the corporate story too, fascinating.

I thought the 1960 Edsel was the nicest design of all. It was the poorest seller and was discontinued. Very few people would pay more a car that looked like a lower priced Mercury or Ford.

In 1960 Britain Ford made a consul Capri coupe, this Edsel looks very similar but obviously better.

I believe I saw one as a child in the early 60s. From the side, it reminds me of some GM cars of the era..... wow what an incredible origin story!!!❤

The flat rear fins have a 59/60 Impala vibe going

@@OpenRoader I had a Roman Red 1959 Impala Sport Coupe in the mid 1980s.
When the 348 engine seized I replaced it with a HiPo 409.

Edsel was not a new 'luxury' marque, Continental was.
Continental was a stand alone division during 1956 and 57.

I had a few 1960 Fords and that blood line shines through onto this Edsel. Pretty cool story

In the middle 1970s I encountered not just one, but two 1960 Edsels in the same parking lot. it was just by total chance. Both were in poor, very rusty condition. I was quite impressed by this rare occasion.

My Uncle had a pristine, sweet ,super straight '62 ,2 door Nova ,4 cyl. ,3 on the tree . He stopped by the house one day (probably '74 ,I was 17) ,he asked ; If I were to give you this car what would you do with it ? I said ; Get that 4 cyl out a put in a V8 . He shook his head , grumbled ,no , got in drove away and I never saw it again . Nothings changed though , I'm still an idiot .

I notice the 60 has a column shifted automatic instead of the convoluted push button system used on the previous model years.
