- A Middle-Earth Traveller: Sketches from Bag End to Mordor is a Lord of The Rings / Hobbit sketchbook / art book by the artist John Howe. In this video I try to show some pages on camera for you guys to see. I Love The Lord of the Rings and anything 'Middle Earth' so I have plenty of other fantasy art book preview videos from the LOTR & Hobbit movies and books which you can find below!
I would say this has more colour drawings / paintings in then the Alan Lee sketchbooks.

Fantastic art work ! as a Graphic designer I really like lord of the rings and peter Jackson films . thanks for the review !
i would want a book with only illustrations of alan lee and john howe
I wonder if they have collabed on the same pieces at all through the Lord of The Rings movies or if it was always individual
Thank you. I am going to place an order for this one.
you're welcome, please let me know what you think to it :)
Very good review, thank you.
You're welcome thanks for watching!
Nice review! This video convinced me! I just ordered mine today, after ordering Alan Lee’s two Sketchbooks. When will you do the video on the Jon Howe Fantasy Art Workshop book? I’m quite curious what it’s about...
Fantastic! I am so glad you liked the video :) coincidentally the John Howe Fantasy Workshop video is scheduled for tomorrow, in about 22 hours to be precise! Please let me know what you think to it :)
learningasidraw Thanks for getting back to me! Sure, I will let you know... I’ve subscribed to your channel. Though I am sure it will be a great book. I love John Howe’s work. I’ve been watching the extended edition appendices of the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit trilogies every night for the past two or three weeks... and also reading the Silmarillion by Tolkien. Totally fell in love with Tolkien’s lore again... and re-discovered my love for creating visual art, which I have been neglecting the last couple of years... I’ve ordered a couple of Middle Earth related art books. Like the Sketchbooks of Alan Lee I mentioned, that you also reviewed - and this Middle Earth Traveller by John Howe. There is also a Hobbit Chronicles series from Weta that goes into concepts, landscape and set designs, costumes, props etc. You might want to check out those if you haven’t already. It looks really promising. Can’t wait for the books to arrive. Good luck with your art!
@@dirk.claassen That sounds like a perfect few weeks to me, everything about them is absolutely amazing!
I have 4 of the 6 hobbit chronicles books, some of them are amazing, I am hoping to buy the cloaks and daggers one soon as the armour design in it looks incredible! Have you got all 6 books?
As well as the books you mentioned you have already seen on my channel, have you seen the Gary Russel series of 'The Art of the Lord of the Rings'? There is one for each film and then another that's a little bigger and covers all 3 together. I actually have videos on each of them too, I have a feeling you will like them! - ua-cam.com/play/PLzOvHJfBQ0FJsx3OO5YCQwZaVja_i_y3Z.html
Unlike the Alan Lee and John Howe books, the art of lotr ones are a little harder to get new so you'rs probably better getting those on ebay.
learningasidraw Yeah, the Lord of the Rings trilogy is my absolute favourite movies of all time. Nothing can top it. Ever since it came out in the early 2000’s I was enchanted by it. I’ve never looked at the world the same. I really wish they made art books at the same standard and level of detail for The Lord of the Rings as they did with The Hobbit Chronicles. Comparing the behind the scenes/making of in the appendices of the films I really wish I could have had all those sketches and photos of the miniatures/“bigatutes” they did. The books I ordered have yet to arrive. I did get the Cloaks and Daggers one, as well as the other Art & Design books for The Hobbit... but not all. I saw an Alan Lee Sketchbook in a bookstore... and I just looked up to see if there were some more of it... and stumbled across these videos showing off these books by accident! I didn’t even know that it was a thing people did on UA-cam! Haha. So I appreciate your effort.
I want the books by Gary Russel, though I think they could have been done a bit better... none the less... It is hard to get them new... but I’ll see if I can get hold of them over the next couple of weeks.
2:05 Peter Jackson as Tom Bombadil?
I missed this comment, but man, that made me laugh it really is the double of him! Coincidence? or is Peter Jackson actually Tom Bombadil...
John Howe Middle earth Traveler Sketches From Bag End to Mordo or he Illustrated World of Tolkien by David Day ?
For me I would be going John Howe Middle earth traveler, or some of the Alan Lee Lord of the Rings / Hobbit sketchbooks ( some preview videos available on my channel if it helps) but I must admit I have not seen the David Day books, generally I hear of David Days getting a bad rep in the tolkien community due to his information often being wrong ( apparently) but I guess from an illustration / art perspectice it's probably irrelevant. Who are the artists in the David Day book? Thanks for watching
@@SketchedbySte I don't know who the artists are in David Day's book, I thought the images I saw were beautiful. I bought it because of the images, I don't understand much English, I'm Brazilian.
What is best traveler or lotr skretchbook???
Hey, I have this playlist full of Lord of the Rings / Hobbit / Middle Earth sketchbooks and art books which you might find useful! ua-cam.com/play/PLzOvHJfBQ0FJsx3OO5YCQwZaVja_i_y3Z.html
If you're looking more for black / white pencil sketchbooks, the Alan Lee and John Howe sketchbooks are fantastic. But the 'art of' books are amazing if you like Peter Jacksons movies. They contain sketches and paintings, costumes and more!
@@SketchedbySte okey i ganna see all your videos but tell me vich book is best??
For the color pieces, does John paint over the sketches, or use color pencils? If it is paint, would you say it is water color, oil or acrylic?
Hey, so it's been a little while since I have looked through the books to give an accurate answer, but I am hoping to go through them soon. That being said this video I recorded might help, it's his workshop book where he shows his process better - ua-cam.com/video/y06qzx4Z-2Q/v-deo.html
I also coincidentally read an interview the other day where someone mentioned some of his finished work being watercolour :)
@@SketchedbySte Yup, over the past day or two I have been researching and also found out that he is very found of watercolor in most of his art work.
