Man I would love to apprentice these two old timers (elders?) for a few months. The wealth of knowledge they hold in their heads... Thanks for sharing!
I wish here in Australia we encouraged Hawthorn. My state New South Wales is still the only state which has not deemed it a weed, however, they do not allow nurseries to sell it. Down in Victoria, it is deemed a weed and you remove if you see it on your property but nurseries can sell it.. It's a beautiful plant and excellent for small native birds. On our property we have some old established hawthorn, is it best to take seed or cuttings for quicker growth?
Mostly killed. But England had their era of persecuting eco-friendly people, too. And there are more regulations their all the time that it make it more difficult to live naturally, as here.
The USA would be so much better if we had this kind of traditional and eco-friendly connection with nature.
After doing it for a season can confirm its bloody(literally) hard work but so rewarding and satisfying once its done.
Nice to see the old skills are not forgotten.Thank you
I'm doing my first hedge laying tomorrow and am very excited...!
P.S thank you for posting this.!
Bob Lewis, one of the best hedge layers I know. Just don't ask him for a song, you'll be there all night.
Excellent work, Bill .... or Mr Hook. He should get his own Slow TV series.
Great video on reclaming a hedge. Love it!
Good video, will help me in maintaining the hedges around the farm for small and ground nesting birds, left a like :)

Are the binders still attached anywhere or are they brought in form elsewhere/offcuts?
Anyone know which style of billhook he is using in the video? Love to try and forge one.
The larger handled one is called the 'Yorkshire Billhook'
Not often your name is the same as your profession
wirecutters...like it
You did!
But the eco-friendly people got put in to reservations.
Oh here were go with the 'natives were peaceful wood elves!' shit. Those people weren't any more or less 'eco-friendly' than any other culture.
