Excellent. I was searching for information on an aviation headphone amplifier, but this was a great explanation of a little bit more than I wanted for myself. Thanks.

Only one wire on the mic? Wouldn't you be creating a ground loop if the jack returns to ground through the airframe? The jacks need to be isolated from ground. You can't tell from the video which terminal is the tip, ring or barrel. What is the difference between the audio and the headphone? What happens on the other end where it connects to the radio? Where's the PTT?

Wires are stripped back far enough to allow tinning and to be pulled through the holes and bent back. The use of flux is not an issue...or do it anyway you wish. I think the students did a fine job,

If the HP and mic share a common then you would wire differently.

very wrong technique. Shield connected at jacks? since when? Only one wire on headphone jack? this install will be noisy and very unreliable. For correct connection look at page B-2 in this install manual as an example : static.garmin.com/pumac/190-00917-01_E.pdf

This video was produced when I was in an avionics technician class at a local CC then after first semester a new instructor came aboard and said everything we learned was incorrect so I withdrew from the class

So what would be the correct way to ground the shield?

    • @lazersharp1

Floating ground at the HeadPhones/Mic side (no connection), The Grounding as shown in the video would be done at the Backplane (grounding lug) of the intercom avionics side. Also... insulation spacers would be used to isolate the HP/Mic jacks from the aircraft Ground or airframe.

Whats with the massive amount of flux and why are you stripping so far back? This may look neat but it is poor technique.

One issue is that you do not want to hook up the shield as shown. The shield only connects to ground at the radio end. The jack needs to be electrically isolated from the panel it mounts to assuming the panel is conductive. See the video from Steinair as they are in the business and have good instructions.

Only one wire on the headphone socket? What if the headphones don't share a common return with the mic? Very poor.
