Suede: Coming Up Again

- Suede were the face of Brit Pop in 1993, whilst Dog Man Star, Coming Up and a slew of classic b-sides (as captured on Sci-Fi Lullabies) only cemented their reputation. But as Brett Anderson once said, the London band's final work before their split in 2003 damaged their legacy. Spurred on by a desire to right those wrongs, the albums since their 2010 reformation - especially Night Thoughts and The Blue Hour - give their 90s work a serious run for its money and reclaim the group's reputation. In this video, we celebrate the rejuvenation of one of the finest bands of their generation.

It could be argued the renaissance of Suede over the past 10 years has now made them the best band to come out of Britain over the past 30 years.
Night Thoughts and The Blue Hour are definitely among their very best albums
As a proud ex american, i always prefered britpop over grunge. Suede remains great to this day. They are more rock than alot of american bands then.

Being a fan of suede since 1994, after Coming up, I lost interest. Then came their Night Thoughts album I was back and since then hoping to see them live, my dream came true November 11 in Hollywood boy that was a great show
The first band I ever saw in Beijing, 2011. Better melodies than any Britpop band, imo. Plus that audacious androgynous persona. Great band and great video!

The Blue Hour was shockingly good, one of my fave albums of the year. They’ve still got it.
And they continue to release great stuff because their 2 new songs she still leads me on and 15 again are great.

as an american, i'm baffled into why suede never made it big in the u.s. their work since "bloodsport" is incredible while those first 3 albums they've done are better than anything blur and oasis have ever done.
The Asphalt World from Dog Man Star is one of my favourite songs and they put some of their best songs on their b sides as you say. I’ve just finished Brett Anderson’s memoir Afternoons with the Blinds Drawn, he’s a very good writer and very honest about his part in Bernard Butlers alienation. A really good summary video, spot on.

Suede, my favorite band of all time... AND yes, their B-sides are amazing, The sound of the streets, is probably my personal favorite Suede B-Side =)

Head music was hit and miss for me. There's crap like Elephant Man on there sure, but also something like Indian Strings which is an absolutely gorgeous song which doesn't get talked about enough.
Great video, Autofiction was my proper introduction to Suede last September, been a fan since, seeing em live in March, can't wait.

If you're a fan of 'A Storm In Heaven', I remember playing on the same bill as a band called Lyca Sleep at the long-gone Jabez Clegg around 2004 and everything about them was so reminiscent of '93 era-Verve: the drums, the dynamics, the guitar sound, even the way they looked. I went digging for them on Spotify last year and was stunned that they're on there - two EPs from 17 years ago. If you get a spare 5 mins, check out the song 'Sold Me A Ride' by them. I think you'll enjoy it.
@@2020Sound haha no way! Very small world. My first band used to gig with Lyca sleep as we had a similar vibe back in the day and became good friends. They eventually became Exit Calm ( different singer) . Rob the guitarist is doing very well now writing for Mark Lanegan and has his own project Humanist.

Television - Marquee Moon, is an album I managed to only get into last year. Surprised me how close to indie music from the mid 2000s is sounded like. Might be a good album to add to your series which doesn't get talked about enough, for those who never heard it, the full album is on UA-cam
Yeah, a lot of those early 00s NME bands definitely copped a few moves either directly or indirectly from Marquee Moon. I remember the press often drawing parallels between Television and The Strokes especially, although I never quite heard it myself. Razorlight are the band I often think of from that era as the group who took a lot from them. Which is still strange to think of, given how commercial they got! I first came across Television in the late 90s when they were still presented as a niche influence. They've probably gone back to being that now. I hear them a lot in a band like Mush these days.
Many things to say, so I'll have to be brief on all- 1. regarding Suede, I didn't really discover them until the "comeback", having been more a fan of Elastica & Blur in the 90's (related- a band that I want to come back is Sleeper in that, for a genre that prided itself on clever lyrics, Louise Wener had some of the sharpest) 2. Regarding Trainspotting- a moment when I realized I was completely on a different tack than my peers was going to see Trainspotting 2 in the theatre, and finding myself the only one there, as even the projector was automatic 3. Sometimes, I think there are machinations that render the "sick boy theory" completely moot- examples are MBV, who never were on the same track as having "it' as the audience was, and similarly The Wrens- while the Whelan brothers were and are more conventional, Charles Bissell is clearly on his own "outsider" obsessive perfectionist track- incidentally The Wrens and new incarnation as Aeon Station would be a good subject for the channel. 4. As for artistic ambition being misread as "pretension"- witness Dutch band Silence is Sexy- only popular in Dutch Indie circles, they re-did their second LP "This Ain't Hollywood" with the Royal Republican Orchestra as "This is Hollywood" and then, did a double LP of experimental chamber pop for the next releases "Modern Antiques" volumes 1 and 2. It's easy to see it as a band over inflating a couple of thousand downloads into thinking they are the Beatles or something, but if you consider where they were coming from as composers, it makes more sense. Likewise, that's how I read Suede- the excess is the whole point, they're trying to be grand, and luxurious as songwriters.
Yeah, that theatricality feels absolutely central to who they are. I imagine you could trace the collective big bang moment of their sound to something like 'Life On Mars?'.
The Wrens have been on my mind as a potential future topic, funnily enough! Aeon Station got a great write up in Uncut recently which pushed them further to the forefront of my thoughts.

@@2020Sound Oh, do the Wrens- because they have always trod this unexplored (uncanny) valley path between the "punky" indie and the classic pop way that I find is so very easily misread. Glad to have this channel's content....

The latest evolution of my Suede fandom has been discovering that the tail end of Sci-Fi Lullabies is - also - the dog's bollocks. Anderson was getting into the crack and the lyrical themes were starting to repeat to the point of self parody, but there's a great little Suede in between Coming Up and Head Music with stuff like Jumble Sale Mums, WSD and Duchess were they were ripping out these fat, bassy, dystopian sort of tunes.
What about a video on Slowdive?
The Blue Hour is as good as the debut album.
Wow, you’ve piqued my interest in their new work! I remember the hype with their debut, the music press were framing it as a Glam Rock revival; among the bands cited were The Auteurs, whose debut, in my opinion, blew all the others out of the water. I’d like to see you do a feature on them.
If you liked their original run, there's definitely a lot to enjoy in their latter day work.
Auteurs: always enjoyed 'Lenny Valentino' (I had it on the original 'The Best Album In The World... Ever!' comp back in the mid 90s 😄). I never really explored but will do eventually. I enjoyed Luke Haines' book on the Brit Pop era - I think it was called 'Bad Vibes'?

Some absolute classics there. As unbelievably packed with landmark albums as 1991 was, I'm surprised the 30th anniversary of Spiderland didn't get a bit more fanfare last year given how influential that album was.

@@2020Sound I know they aren’t in that ‘indie’/‘alternative’ genre bracket that you are focusing on in this channel, but another band from that period, The KLF, have such a bloody hilarious and fascinating band mythology that surrounds them and they don’t get discussed as much as they should do!
They were committed performance artists who’s mission statement was to mock the music industry and they succeeded massively, i do have genuinely mad respect for those lads lol
I used to have Bill Drummond's book 45 - fascinating bloke. Love the story of him booking the Bunnymen on a tour around the Hebrides/Scotland in the shape of rabbit ears when he was their manager 😆
Awesome channel, subscribed, nice to have indie music in discussion. 45 years old and still recording my own form of indie music. If you want to check out some demos on my own channel. "Real to Real" is a new one I done, "Small Talk" "Sum of all parts" "Mr Merry Go Man" are ones I usually promote. They're rough around the edges but they get point across, you just have to imagine them as bootleg versions before the finished product, it's a hobby that I love to upkeep

Bands don't have to go on for 500 years like U2 have. Make your point and move on. Like Paul Weller did with The Jam . Finish at your peak, make a mark . Don't have a rear view mirror in your life, move forward.
Point being, this band as great as they were should have finished long ago.
