@jamesprigioni Won't the rotting logs offer an ideal place for a termite colony? I'm setting up my raised beds next to the storage building and home. One thing they like is cellulose/ wood and the other is moisture.
Always enjoy your videos and love seeing Tuck!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
My wife and I always enjoy watching Tuck harvest his favorite snacks. It really shows Tuck is your best friend. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ for the boss Tuck!!!!!!
Agree ❤❤❤🐾🐾🐾
Watched your interview with the millennial gardener before. Great job from two Jersey guys!!
Let’s Gooo!!! Thanks Janet
Love the cover on your high raised bed. I have something, probably raccoons, that raid my garden at night, munching up the new seedlings and even digging up seeds. So frustrating! A cover like that would be perfect. ❤❤❤❤❤❤ for Tuck, and thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Im a new gardener and in a rented apartment, but I have space for a raised bed and Im trying it this year for the first time!
I asked my local arborist to drop off some wood chips (as i have in the past), and he dropped like 5 loads throughout the week! I was starting to get irritated then i figured oh well i have a mountain of soil! I actually filled my (same) raised garden bed ‘finally’, wabout 60% woodchips. I searched the food forest man for some clarity, although ive been learning from him sonce istarted about 7 years ago. HENCE the reason i didnt need his video to tell me where to start! Thanks a million JP!
We have a raised bed that we put bales of straw in the bottom. It has been there at least 29 years, the outside wood (landscape timber cut and put in vertically) have started rotting out, but the bed itself is still intact and is a very productive.
Honestly that sounds even better than logs or wood chips.
I could donate lots of branches and leaves every year!
Make positively sure the straw does NOT have herbicides sprayed on it. It will ruin a bed.
@@MsCindyh If you get a contaminated bed, you'll have to grow only monocotyledons like corn and onions for years. And brassicas seem to be relatively resistant. Tomatoes and beans are really sensitive to persistent herbicides. By the way, alfalfa hay should be safe, but I don't know how it would do in raised beds. I would think it would get very hot fast.
Straw is not hay. Straw hasn’t nutritional value and isn’t feed to animals. Alfalfa is hay feed to cows and horses and other livestock.
I love how you call Tuck the young King . ❤❤❤❤
❤❤❤ Big hearts for Tuck from Northern Ireland! I had a Yorkshire terrier called Scruff for 13 years and he was my best friend in the world. Tuck reminds me of him, what a gentleman ❤
Loved the spot on the Millennial Gardener channel. You both have something in common, you both love your pooches!❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ these hearts and more for the young king boss Tuck!!! You are loved by many❤❤❤❤❤. I appreciate you James for sharing your knowledge.
Tuck is looking handsome with his new haircut ❤❤❤
❤❤❤❤❤ My Molly, who's also a Yorkie, loves Tuck! She always barks when she sees him on the screen. And later, when I say, "Wheres Tuck?," she's barking again. Thank you for sharing him with us! Thank you also for sharing your awesome knowledge! Long live the King! ❤❤❤❤❤
I did this last week and was worried if I was making a mistake. Thank you for your expertise, I feel better now. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ to you both!
Every year I have to push up the old round bales of hay horse and goat manure plus the cleanings from the chicken coop so when I need something for a new bed I go to the oldest pile and have all I need!
I have chickens, what ratio dirt to shit do you use?✌🏻🐆
@@PatricePumaPaw-boston-so8qn I plant in at least a year old 100 percent compost. When it looks like soil it’s ready, both horse and chicken is way too hot fresh.
@@JohnWood-tk1ge thank you for the information, I appreciate it ✌🏻
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ love you, Tuck and James .
We love you too!! 😁🐕❤️
Tuck has given me the idea of trying raw vegetables to my dogs. So far they all like carrots., sweet potatoes(which they stole before I got the groceries put away) and white potatoes. Only one likes cucumbers..Thanks Tuck for the wonderful idea.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤ Tuck, king of the forest !
I have two of those covers for my beds. If you have a herd of 19 deer that walk right through your yard every evening, these will SAVE your garden. I will get more next year for sure!!
THANK U A MILLION TIMES!!! I just got a 6ftx3ftx1ft corrugated metal raised bed system, AND I got a FREE windfall of hardwood woodchips from road crew that was working on my road - delivered FREE OF CHARGE! They were more than happy to not haul off to county yard!! So, I wondered if I could use those wood chips to save $$$ on filling this raised bed up and VOILA! There u are with another great video showing how to do it. My love to Tuck and keep growing strong u 2!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤spamming the hearts for tuck🥰
I do leaves (ideally semi rotted) and twigs and small debris to fill the bottom half of all my pots even on seedlings. Prevents soil from leaking out. The roots grow easily all through the moist organic material. Additionally i notice ecosystems of decomposers from bugs as big as earwigs and roly polys down to the tiny hard to see ones. They live in the pot and presumably feeding the soil.
Been watching you for a minute James! My wife and I are in the process of buying our first home in WA - zone 8. I can’t wait to start planning for our own food forest!
Nice work ❤❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

❤ Tuck is such a good gardener. 😊
My son and I just got a big raised bed set up and placed yesterday afternoon. The bottom is filled with branches and logs from a tree that fell during the ice storm. I've got to get the soil in, but that's going to take several trips to the garden center. 🌻🌷🪻 Soon, food!!
Thanks to you and Tuck for another great one!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Delighted to learn about this method for growing and hilling potatoes. We love seeing Tuck in the garden❤❤❤❤❤❤…our Yorkie Fergus watches the videos intently and loves to see Tuck too!❤❤❤❤❤❤
❤❤❤ for Tuck!
I always love seeing the bossman keepin' track of things in the garden...💞💕💙💚💛🧡❤💖💗💞 Tuck! I'm intrigued by the idea of woodchips in the bottom of a raised bed, as I have a big pile of them from past tree trimmings, and have been pondering how to use them. I may try this, in another year or so. Thanks James. I also watched your interview with Mr. Milennial Gardener, and great interview!
I've also used newspaper bundles for core gardening, since those are more readily available than used straw bales. We'd been leaving them out for paper recycle for years, and it never occurred to me to bury them in the garden to raise the soil levels. They hold on to water pretty well. I tie them up with sisal twine, and douse them with nitrogen fertilizer before covering them up.
Also, if you want your woodchips to break down super fast, consider growing wine cap mushrooms. Along with the native fungi, they ate through my woodchips in less than a year.
Tuck ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I just love Tuck! he is Awesome!
😍 Hearts for the Garden master Tuck.
❤❤❤❤❤. Been growing for years now and have not had a year as productive as this year, no big harvest yet but the growth is there. Nowhere near your scale..yet lol you are my biggest inspiration so please keep doing what you do. God bless
Great video James, hearts for Tuck ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Jerzee James & Tuck, love your new product line,! When my wooden beds need replacement I'll order some metal ones! I have two birdies with the Tuck code! Little Tuck looks sad sitting next to that huge raised bed, he's like.... How am I gonna help myself to veggies! ❤😂❤🐾🐾❤️
Let's Gooo!!! Haha, he will find a way to get to the veggies and the carrots. He always does. As we know he is much smarter than me, that's for sure
if i may suggest: if you have time, and fresh woodchips, you can "compost in place" by heaping up wood chips (and you can also add alfalfa pellets if you like) and just water it occasionally. it will sink down a LOT, and then you can top it up with your raised bed soil
Oh yeah, we use alfalfa pellets to "cook down" leaves. Lately we've been using buckets of used coffee grounds we get from a local coffee shop instead. I'd like to try those on wood chips, hmmm.
