Erma Bombeck's column comes to life in this short-lived ABC sitcom with Miriam Flynn, Jim Hampton and Doris Roberts. Erma's stuff worked better in print than on the small screen.
Product Placement was a concern then. I actually worked on this show and had that problem with a line that I recommended in place of one that just wasn't funny. It involved a name-brand, and as much as they loved my line, they were afraid to use it! (And this story is in the Book I'm writing at this very moment about my years in The Biz!)
You know what would be cool, if someone (not you obviously) posted full episodes of these rare shows that aren't found on any streaming service to dailymotion, or a torrent or some such thing, since the companies who made them probably think they arent worth the trouble to upload to streaming sites. That would be such a great thing for that person (not you or anyone you have contact with obviously, again) to do for TV preservation and history.
If you still care, the Erma Bombeck estate recently posted 7 of the 9 episodes on UA-cam, including the pilot that never aired on ABC and that I had never seen before. They also had 7 of 9 available on an older, defunct, version of her website. 1 of the episodes they had on said website isn't currently up here (likewise, the unaired pilot wasn't on there). I thought it was a great show. ABC dumped it into the worst time slot they had, and then pulled the plug after 3 weeks.
There were some misfires prior to "Everybody Loves Raymond". Though she was a gifted character actress as her work in the original "The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three ( As a NYC mayor's wife)", "A New Leaf", the Alan Arkin-directed comic nightmare "Little Murders", and other movies prove.
I could go for a bowl of Root Oops right about now.
top cat .james I remember my Mom being a fan of Erma Bombeck's books as a kid. That's an awesome flashback.

I think this was Al Bundy's house before he moved in.
JENDALL714 I was thinking the same thing. Hollywood loves to recycle. So if this was the same set (slightly rearranged), it's not a surprise.
Doris Roberts playing the mother? Groundbreaking!
I wonder why the show just wasn't called "Erma" or "Bombeck" with greater name recognition it may have lasted longer!
Did they really just rip off Laverne and Shirley with the whole "Front door hits someone else in the butt and sends them into the closet" gag??? LOL

Married with Children set
R.I.P. Doris Roberts (1925-2016), a.k.a. Mrs. Marie Barone on "Everybody Loves Raymond."
R.I.P. Doris Roberts 1925-2016
Who'd have thought Erma Bombeck had this dark a side. Precursor to the Bundy family.
I'd forgotten that Doris Roberts was in the cast of this show. I'm sure she was great in it.
The full episodes of this series have been posted her on youtube.
Doris Roberts right after ANGIE got cancelled
And two years before her role on Remington Steele.
Was there a failed show in the 70s and 80s that Doris Roberts WASNT part of?
