Blu-rays are more scratch-resistant but not scratch-proof; they aren't some immortal enigma.
If mishandled or used in a low-quality, dirty binder, it will still scratch. Nobody at any point said that DVDs have the same scratch resistance as Blu-ray; I assumed any of this information didn't need to be stated as it is fairly common knowledge.
If used with a low-quality disc binder, there would still be superficial scratches on my disc rather than the disc being a literal mirror, although the scratches wouldn't be as obvious, but they'd still exist. The discs are NOT scratch-proof.
I used the Blu-ray disc for comparison simply because I have no DVD based media from when I started properly caring for my discs that ISN'T Blu-ray. (I only started properly caring for my discs when my frontal lobe fully formed)

That's part of why these days, I rip all of it to disk and pretty much don't touch them again afterwards. It's a shame that when these media were more current, that it wasn't an option to do so.
Plus, I convert them and keep them on a NAS for streaming, another thing that wasn't really an option at the time.

I was an unorganized piece of shit that would do the disc stack thing back then. While the blu rays took longer to "break", they were almost repairable in my experiences. Ever since, I'm so glad I decided to take the extra 30 seconds it took to put the things back in their cases. So yeah. My point is that you're right, and should not use these binders.

While that's true, they still do get scratched and can be destroyed even more easily than DVDs. There's not a single scratch on it because I keep it in the case.
If it was in one of these it would have had scratches lol. (Albeit less heinous scratches)
If I kept it in a sleeve you'd see at least a couple scratches instead of a brand new disc.

So two issues I thought about these are... A) Disc rot. Disc rot reportedly starts once the top (label) side of a disc is worn away and exposed. Something which the abrasive surface of a disc binder and the movement in/out would cause (damage) that would make disc rot more likely. And B).... Chemical reaction. Under a moist or warm scenario (or both scenarios) I would think it's possible for the binder material to chemically react with the disc surface in a way that leads to parts of the disc binder's material binding into the disc surface. Or as the disc binders material decays, it could lead to the same binding chemical reaction. Just as decaying styrafoam has.

The disc rot thing the only actually legitimate reason I can think of to not use disc binders (pretending that they scratch discs when you can't be bothered to close the case or wipe them off before inserting them is cringeworthy). I too have worried about this, but I figured that having loose discs that I don't own the boxes to in sleeves is a lot safer than them being loose in a stack somewhere. This video is very VERY narrow-minded and yes, I'm frustrated. 😂 He didn't even mention "disc holders" (I can't think of the correct name for this, it's the kind if thing that is akin to a single stack of discs, but each disc has a plastic tray that a disc sits in that you swing out) which actually can scratch discs.

    • @VforVendetta13

That also depends on two things.
    1. the quality of the disc binder. I have several good quality ones, and everything in those disc binders looks mint as the backs of the sleeves are designed specifically to avoid scratching CD's, which are even more damage prone than DVD's.
    2. Not having dirt on them in the first place when placing them in said binder, and making sure to close the binders up when not in usage, so dust doesn't seep into them.
I've been using them for decades, since my college years. Though it is true that certain types can scratch up discs. Even so, I've never used them for console games, burnt CD's and DVD-R's, and collections from people who kept PC games in disc binders and handed me what they had as they no longer wanted it.
Though honestly, despite some of the comments related to yours and your brothers handling of discs? I had a friend back in high school, you'd think he was the perfect type of person to lend out games to. Very put together, took care of his stuff. His room was emaculate. However, I lent him Sim City 2000, in near mint condition. I get back an old beat up CD case that wasn't the original, without the covers, without the manual, and with the game looking not just damaged on the bottom but also on the top.
Turns out his mother cleaned his room for him. He did not take care of his things, it was merely a perception he maintained in public. In private, he was really a massive slob. It also took the guy months to find my game. That was a lesson. Thankfully it still plays, but there are issues with it. It does hang up sometimes in the drive. I'm amazed it plays at all with how deep some of the scratches are. So looks and perception can be deceiving. After that, it took another 8 or 9 years before someone convinced me to lend them games (my sister, and no, I never lent her anything after that...).

Suffice it to say, the old games were in better condition the way they were, and the brand new burned discs that I got to play at least once a week since last year are already fogged up from the micro scratches. They're not so bad, though, as once in a while I clean them with a bit of dish soap and water, let them dry by shaking the discs or lightly pressing a paper towel over them (no wiping), and they look as shiny as new.

My PS1 ended up not being able to read any game discs anymore, even brand new ones. It was three years old at the time. I think the laser reader was damaging them, but somehow regular CDs (music) would work.

One binder I hated where those with tough plastic sleeves. Often they where tight and squeeze the discs together forcing them to rub as they are pulled out of the sleeve. And many had tabs inserted inside which went behind your disc. They have some sharp edges. I pulled them up and out over the discs. The best folders where the ultra cheap ones with soft plastic holders and they are loose with soft padding. One I bought at dollar tree was the best I ever bought: no tabs and wasn't squashed so I could move it without scraping it against the back

This video that tries to tell me that I'm foolish for protecting those CDs (that I've never owned cases for, that's why they were a penny each) is too funny. What am I supposed to do, stack them up in a pile? I don't need quick access to them, since I usually listen to FLAC rips. It's very telling how his only defense of disc binders involved GameCube games. Maybe it never occured to him that people would willingly buy loose discs in the same way that it never occured to me that there were people out there who would be silly enough to put games that they own boxes for in a disc binder.

Or just take care of your media (as a young kid, teenager, or adult!) ie I have thousands of CDs and DVDs and don't even use disc folders, I simply fold and A4 piece of paper in half, place the CD on the paper media side up in order to work out where to fold in the outside edges, then take it away and fold the two sides inwards. That forms a simple paper wallet. I then store these inside boxes, shoeboxes with superglued cardboard slats so that they are at an angle, or even just a couple inside existing DVD cases (and use a database to keep track of what is where). It is disc rot that's the problem, not even with keeping the CDs well, some were just 'made' to not last long or on cheaper media.
Great video, and I get the fun and jokes and even sarcasm, but there simple shouldn't be any scratches at all. If a house is kept clean, the CDs are handled by the edges, and placed softly away (ie even now when you filmed this, you placed a game dvd case ontop of a CD that was media-side up!!!! Grrr lol
I'm only slightly (and more jokingly) annoyed because when I find great stuff at thrift stores and 2nd hand shops, mostly they are scratched because nobody cared, no parents taught respect of CDs (and belongings in general) and a rare media is ruined :(
Vacuuming inside a CD wallet might also help since most these days will have aquired dust. I cannot believe I've typed all this lol but yeah, the video should simply be about placing CDs slowly and carefully in a wallet, keeping the wallet and the room and the CD tray clean, never double-fill and just take pride and attention to what you own.
Still subbed though because a the jokes and well-made video! =)

Those disc cases are good for when you are traveling. I had an original xbox travel case and it had a hook for you to hook onto your pants while you were walking over to a friends place to play. It allowed you bring a lot more games with you and it was padded to protect what you were putting in there. It also had a net for..... I am not really sure I never used it but i guess you could put memory cards in them. It was made for a time when you didn't have internet in your home. I am talking about the early 2000's, not the late 2000's like the halo 3 and wii era. You would go over and play tony hawk, mortal kombat, mech assault, battlefront, all those early 2000 games that you couldn't play with others with that internet connection that you didn't have. From looking at your collection it seems you had games from the latter era and your mom may have been old fashioned by giving you a disc binder so you wouldn't destroy your games. I may be wrong, the playstation 2 and the gamecube was from the early 2000's, but your collection just looks like they were singleplayer games on the playstation 2 or games from the later 2000's, again maybe your mom being cheap and not wanting to spend too much money on video games. Also, 007: Nightfire was fire, that game got better the further you got into it.
Sidenote: that 007 case looks like a platinum hits case, meaning your mom bought it later on after it sold a bunch and they re-ran new copies to be sold later on. If it was the original run of copies it would have been in the green case, or it wasn't that big of a hit. Just saying......
