Rest in peace Chick. I have been watching this concert compulsively the last few days and just heard that he passed. Rest in peace to a true creative giant.
Its a shame we are mortal. If one man deserved immortality, if only because of the seemingly bottomless well of his creativity, it was Chick. For me he stands right alongside the other giants on the musical mount rushmore. Miles, Monk, Bird, Mozart....Prince....whoever you have on yours, Chick is there as well. Its a shame no one lives forever, but Chick will have musical immortality. We will still be listening to this 1000 years from now. imo
Jazz is such a spiritual thing. There have been so many great piano trios and this is one of the best. I always feel elevated spiritually when listening to this quality of musicianship.
Like a kid rips open a Christmas present wrapped in Scarbo, pulls out a Green Dolphin Street fire engine, takes it down the street 80 mph, wakes up the entire neighborhood, and laughs. So great. RIP Mr Corea.
Chick pretty much just gives the middle finger to the melody here, and does whatever he wants, and he does it so well, you wouldn't even think it's green dolphin street, but just another great song
Mind-blowing blowing over Green Dolphin Street changes. Chick must have listened to a lot of McCoy Tyner the night before. Chick doesn't like to play the melody much. But that's ok, because the majority of his listeners are pro musicians or at least well educated listeners. Incredible music, and fantastic musicians. Bravo!
without McCoy I think one evening befor would not have enough LOL!(Good Remark of you) this sound in my ears as at least one year of har practice...other wise this kind of level would be impossible
Chick not only was a brilliant soloist, when it came time for the bassist to solo chick did not abandon him. So many bassists [like myself] got abandoned when soloing [the pianist and drummer] would just stop. I had to clear up that little one by saying, I will stop playing when you solo and on more than one occasion had to do it to cure that habit. Chick always keeps the thing flowing... If only I could have been bassist in a band with Dave W. Great drummer... The guys I was always paired to made for poor metronomes.
Oh my gosh, someone I relate to! Why do pianists think it's great to just stop playing during a bass solo, it's one of the most infuriating things...next to a pianist who thinks they need to play the bass line double octave...
@@karlrovey The pianists all think they are Bill Evans. Having been in a few trio's I was never treated to that kinda piano talent. No, I was not LeFaro or even Tooch... No, but even they needed a marker or two. Brotherly love from Australia...
Your awesome heavy bass player along with that blessed handsome drummer David Weckl has blessed you Bro. Chick. You could not ask for any better musicians to honor you by being in you blessed band man. Awesome musicians.
This trio is an example of perfection , a peak unlikely ever to be repeated. They do not play and record as they did , That is why the magic and mystery is alive.
@Ian Roberts Totally agree. This is so straightforward and yet so independently creative along the line in so many details. It's hard to believe it happened
Better than Jarrett? Very different from Jarrett. This is aggressive and it its way, amazing. But still heavy on the showboating. Which comes down to a matter of taste, the musicians', not the listener's. While I enjoyed it, I won't be back soon. Jarrett has technique and is secure in his prowess. I don't need chops rammed down my throat. Maybe they could relax a bit.
A fantastic performance. RIP Chick, you will be missed. Please note that On Green Dolphin Street was composed by Kaper and Washington in 1947, not by Miles Davis!
Um ok. But jazz is diff. U credit the song to the VERSION composer/performers. Kinda like folk music. U don’t know who wrote what, but you know who did the versions u like.

Chick, you have always been one of my favorite jazz musicians. I am still sorry that I pissed you off in the late 80's in Santa Fe. You are the best, Paul
What a legend and a legacy he has left! RIP Chic. He was always on another ethereal plane of inspiration, interpretation and now playing on an even higher plane of existence. Between him and many others that have graduated from this earthly tabernacle, they have taught me that music is infinite, and that their style is one of a kind, like your fingerprints and personality. There will never be another Chic Corea, Oscar Peterson, Count Basie, and many others who made a difference in the music world. The right people in the right place at the right time. They will all be missed....
Someone was saying this was "better than the Keith Jarrett Trio." The Jarrett group is like a nice warm bath. This is more like a Karen Silkwood/Kerr McGee shower. It's a matter of taste, the musicians', that is, not the listener's.
Seen them couple years later at a small club , cross street just off Hollywood Blvd. Front row center. My friend could have reached out and played upper register
It's the way he amplifies his double bass... It sounds like a piezo pickup (Brands like David Gage, Fishman...). During the eighties and the nineties that was very used !
It's all in piezo pickups and poor amplification. Pickups physically aren't able to capture the true sound of an upright bass, mostly just the sound of the strings. An upright is definitely not supposed to sound like a fretless electric bass, but most upright bass pickups have that sound and the way you eq an amp can make it better or worse. Patituccis tone is amazing when he's not going through a system like this though
Probably the best modern jazz song interpretation in the last 30 years......just devastating........a monumental loss.....RIP Chick.......
