The artwork was very inspired by Moebius as well Creators confirmed in a recent AMA art book and soundtrack is on the way but no word on physical distribution for the series itself. Also may I recommend Primal from Genndy Tartakovsky. Scavengers Reign and Primal are my 2 favorite animated shows in the past 5 to 10 years and I feel you would both appreciate it
Primal looks great I definitely need to check it out!! Didn't know about it but love Tartovsky's animated shows, I've also heard good things about Blue Eyed Samurai which I'm looking into as well definitely seeing the Moebius vibes
Amazing series, amazing animation, the creature desing is extremely creative 10/10. But it is not science fiction, if we classify it that way we would have to deduct points because it would be a bad science fiction series. There are spaceships, yes. There are aliens, yes. There is "technology" that does not exist in our time, yes. Does that make it science fiction? No, because nothing that appears has a credible scientific basis. The fauna and flora of the planet do visually incredible things just... because. There is no credible reason on why a mushroom can reprogram a robot and give it feelings or why a fish, if you hit it, can turn into an oxygen mask. It just happens and that's it. The only argument to justify this is that "It's an alien planet" which is the equivalent of "A wizard did it." It´s normal to see this with authors who are not accustomed to writing science fiction, but the advantage that Scavengers Reign has is that although it fails in the science part, the fiction it presents is visually beautiful and the story compensates a little. So I repeat: great series, not good science fiction. If you want an example of how to create an alien world that really maintains a scientific construction but without forgetting that it is fiction at the end of the day, I recommend that you read Children of Time. (just to give a comparison example)
Thanks for watching and I can see your point! But imo it's genre elements are certainly science fiction over medieval fantasy, gothic horror, etc But agreed the immaculate design combined with great character development are truly what make the series stand out and probably my 2nd favorite TV Series of 2023
Good review but one thing I do take issue with is comparing a 2 hour movie with a 6 hour series. You said the creator was missing the characterization that this series had. That is a no S moment. Nearly every series that has 6 seasons has more fleshed out characters than this show because it is nearly impossible not to. longer shows have more time focus on characters so why compare a movie to a tv show? Other than that great review.
Hey thanks for watching! Yeah that's a good point and I definitely didn't do a good job explaining myself, for sure directly comparing the characterization between The Creator and Scavengers Reign is not fair due to runtime - but more-so the subject matter that was chosen to be explored combined with actual execution and dialogue is what I found a little more lacking in The Creator (all just my opinion of course) What were your general thoughts on both?
