A true star of stage and screen! Hepburn's entire approach to show business and life is wrapped up in one throw-away line, 4:00, " Don't tell me what's wrong. Just fix it. " The sheer audacity of this statement isn't lost on Cavett, whose spontaneous laugh is hilarious! And then, Hepburn felt comfortable enough with Cavett to simply say at 5:02, " Why don't they just start? Have they started? " What followed was two hours of insightful and delightful conversation!
This behind -the -scenes clip is wonderful! Hepburn obviously took to Cavett, :35 ( " You look nice. " ) It's important to remember that she had been in the business since 1931, ( ! ) and wanted to present herself well on her first foray into television. She is not being critical but simply asking to be deferred to as a true professional would do. It's fun watching the stage crew flit around her like cautious butterflies to a flower!
I'm trying to agree with you. Look, there's such a thing as being a DIVA. THIS is "Diva" and it's not attractive. Love her movies, stilted in character development, would HATE having dinner with her.
@@nhmooytis7058 I think she was rich enough to know that she didn't need a man to live and also that she could afford that behavior. Also you said he hated feminists, is that true?
Oh wow - all these people criticizing her and saying she was insufferable and intolerable. She was one of the greatest movie stars EVER and, as she'd constantly kept her life very private and never been on TV until this point, she wanted this to be right for her. Imagine Marilyn Monroe in her first TV appearance - same generation. She needed to be comfortable. I don't find this awkward at all - she just wanted it to be right. People here forget that, if someone had said something wrong, she would have walked (as would any great actor) but she seemed to be enjoying it and, as she got on well with Dick, went ahead with it. Remember who she had worked with in the past and were her friends
A true artist at work. Such a pleasure to watch! And Cavett is an equally capable host. Letterman or Keno would've interrupted the conversation with something stupid. I wish I were born in the time of the Dick Cavett Show ❤️
You can see the true face of a person by watching how they behave among "less important" people. Dick is very polite as always. Amazing interviewer. Miss Hepburn acts like a star who is faded and wants to feel important again.
Bingo, he was a great host to this guest. Incredible his awareness of her personality and they way he worked to keep things in order. Great clip, thanks for sharing.
Joan Crawford was the polar opposite in every way during interviews. She was so regal and mannered. And she only finished the 6th grade whereas Katharine had a pretty privileged life. That’s pretty telling on how they both treated staff. Completely different
With Crawford we tended to get a performance in her interviews so we rarely saw the real person. Kate wouldn't care too much about how she's coming across only that people are entertained or feel they're listening to something worth listening to and with Bette Davis what you saw was generally what was there. They all share the narcissism and entitled personality traits though in varying ways. Lauran Bacall was another! We know such psychologies in our own lives too.
have nothing against the other celebs that were on this show but is this channel ever going to show the Dick Cavett shows where he interviews Jackie Gleason or Art Carney? How about any Honeymooners actors that were part of the main cast? These are rarities much like the other Cavett ones.

Could they design a set worse than this?! Never have columns in a set as it fragments the conversations visually. The lighting was also too bright and to top it off Dick wears white trousers/white socks/white shoes which will blast on tv screens and then those endless booms in shot!
@@nhmooytis7058 Amen to that. Having been born in '72, there wasn't much about that decade that I was fond of, with regards to decor. The truly formative decade of my youth, the '80s, seemed light-years away in comparison.
What a horribly unpleasant woman. Dick Cavett was a saint to put up with her. When she said she wanted a table that she could put her feet on, I would have said "Were you raised in a barn? We're not hogs in a sty"

It's so interesting to watch behind the scene of this Katharine Hepburn interview. Thank you for uploading it

Lll
Incredible. I hope to see more of these released from the cavett archives!
She is right, the lower main table is shorter and wider and of course looks much better.....
My mother always told me: "Don't put your feet on the table."
Your mother was right
I watched these interviews in 1973. Kate was my hero since I saw her in Little Women as a kid, I’m 68 now.
why she was your hero?
Sofia R she was thoroughly independent without being a quacking man hating feminist blaming men for all her problems,
@@nhmooytis7058 I think she was rich enough to know that she didn't need a man to live and also that she could afford that behavior. Also you said he hated feminists, is that true?
Sofia R um, no woman ‘needs a man’ to live. I managed bookstores and was a proofreader, and was self supporting all my life!
Sofia R can’t you read! I said feminists hate men. Kate thought feminism was crap.

The woman at the beginning entering with Katherine...I love her outfit 😍

Like a Robert Osborne. He must have had producers saying "kid gloves!"
That yankee Brahmin accent is fantastic. “I have a cahd……..” “Let us be the cullah ….”
No never face the truth, not when you have gotten this far!
I love this.

She was fabulous!
I like the guy in the suit who walks behind the couch & lights up a cigarette 🚬 at 1:10
Surprised Katy didn’t comment on that!
Was that Phyllis at the start holding the bag? I bet she got some earache at times from Katharine.
From the moment I saw her as a kid I just adored her.
Wow,... as the saying goes 'never meet your heroes...'

Wow! Love the behind the scene events. Boy she was bossy.
this is like when my mom comes over to visit.
PLEASE POST SARAH VAUGHAN INTERVIEW

Damn what a pompous Little Queen Miss Hepburn was
She needs a good slap.
You’re right Vern lol

She's a bit of a trial.
Definitely a bit trying
What a pain in the butt she is.... she wants to feel important....
WTH, Kate? My hero, so much complaining?
canterlevi Just goes to show you that all the glitz and glamour of the stars from that area is an act
canterlevi it was a tacky set, Seventies ‘style’ whether clothes or furnishings stank.

Never meet your heroes
is she taking those old slimming pills?
Queen Kate!

How fussy!
Damn she really was a Karen
PLEASE don't die without JESUS in your heart, because death is just the beginning.
SOULS LIVE FOREVER!
ST JOHN 3:16! ❤
Call me a mysogonist all you want but she seems insufferable.
It may just be me, but every time I see someone lighting a cigarette during an interview indoors on screen, it looks so cringe.
