  • In this week's video we have a 2022 Audi S4 stereo upgrade featuring Morel Carbon Elate Pro 62A, Helix V Eight DSP plus TWO Helix C One mono amplifiers and a custom built double JL Audio 12W6V3 ported subwoofer enclosure all connected via toslink out from the factory stereo using a NAV TV Zen adapter. Cue the choir of Angels! This 2022 Audi S4 stereo upgrade sounds absolutely heavenly, but it was no easy feat.
    Why does the car stereo even need to be upgraded in the 2022 Audi S4? You will be shocked at the level of quality in these Audi B9 car audio speakers. There are bizarre car stereo speaker sizes behind the deceivingly large car stereo speaker grilles. Hint - those are NOT 6.5" speakers in the front doors of the Audi B9.
    What is the best way to upgrade the car stereo in an Audi S4/A4 B9? The car stereo installation in this vehicle was challenging, but streamlined by using the right parts. The Nav TV Zen adapter is the BEST way to get a clean audio signal from the factory head unit. You can either go RCA out, completely bypassing the factory amplifier OR you can keep the signal digital and go toslink out into an aftermarket DSP. That is going to be the cleanest method of car audio installation and that's what we did in this Audi S4 stereo upgrade. We kept it digital and went straight into a Helix V Eight DSP amplifier along with TWO - Yes, two - Helix C One mono amplifiers. These beastly amplifiers powered two JL Audio 12W6v3 subwoofers.
    For those of you that are not familiar with these car audio brands, Helix is part of Audiotec Fischer, a niche high end car audio company out of Germany. The quality of Helix car audio products is superior to so many other products on the market. The software in the Helix DSP is loaded with a massive amount of equalization control - both on the input and output side. It is a professional car audio installer's dream. Morel is a similar niche high end speaker company out of Israel. They make both home and car audio speakers. Morel is known for their incredibly clean, smooth, detailed, open and airy tweeter design. Characteristically they are never harsh. Whether you're listening to their entry level $289 Maximo Ultra series or their $5,400 Supremo series featuring the incredible Piccolo tweeter, the performance of the Morel tweeter is what you will notice most.
    As the car stereo installation unfolds, John and PJ design an amp rack to hold the two massive Helix C One amplifiers on the backside of the high output subwoofer enclosure. The dual JL Audio 12W6 sub box was designed by car audio installer John using Bass Box Pro software. Watch as John works his car audio magic using the Helix DSP software to fine tune this Audi S4 stereo to perfection.
    Upgrading the car stereo in this 2022 Audi S4 was not easy, but with the right parts and design plan, the team delivered results that are out of this world. You cannot go wrong with the Helix V Eight DSP MKII, C One amplifiers, Nav TV Zen, JL Audio W6's and Morel Carbon Elate Pro 62A speakers. The best part? You can't tell anything is aftermarket until you listen to it (or fold down the rear seats/pop open the trunk). It looks stock, but the sound is entirely aftermarket.

    Fantastic build. I've got a similar build in my S7 and couldn't be happier with the Morel speakers and Helix amps. On my build we sent signal to the Helix V Twelve and P One amps through the Zen V. Then for speakers went full active 3 way Morel Virtus Nano (Audi space constraints) front and 2 way rear. Finished up with the Morel Ultimo Titanium 10". The system is loud with great musicality and clarity.

      I think for a more basic vehicle, that is probably the route this client would have taken. It's not like it was 20 years ago when you bought your kid a beater car as their 1st car. Most of our clients kids are driving newer/nicer cars than I drive. It's a very different world :)

    Keep coming back to this install for inspiration for my 2020 golf R install also with the Zen optical system. Think I've settled on a a helix dsp just not which one yet and its the only missing part of what I have to get debating on ultra or pro MK3 with a little future proofing in mind. Still debating on using both my jl audio hd 600.4 amps and full one and having to install crossovers. Decisions decisions. Anyway thanks again I'll refer to this a lot throughout the install as well wire runs even due to golf's being part of the Audi family of car although my battery is the the front. Lot of easy access to quiet a few of the media modules in that Audi trunk which is great that no huge 0 gauge runs I'm a little jealous 😂❤

      What speakers did you decide on? When it comes to set up, I am a fan of going with good quality equipment in the right places, dialed in and set up properly. The less channels we can do it with the better. I think the answer to your question really depends on how you want to layout your speakers and how many factory locations you want to use, right? Can't go wrong with either DSP! I'm glad you found the video helpful :)

  • @georgekech4903
    @georgekech4903 5 місяців тому +1

    Couldn’t you just connect the head unit directly to an after market dsp/amp? You’d just leave the factory amp without sound from the head unit and also remove the plug for the speakers from the factory amp and connect new speakers to the after market amp with the same wiring of the original speaker. The head unit would still be connected to the factory MMI but won’t pass sound. For the car sound notifications you could just attach a small speaker to the factory amp/MMI. That way you could potentially omit the need for that adapter which needs coding.

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  4 місяці тому +1

      Without re-coding the head unit, you'd be working with an already processed audio signal and would have to piggyback your DSP amp after the stock amp. This is less than ideal as you are working with an already processed and amplified audio signal. In some vehicles with stock premium amplifiers, there is actually a pre-amp level signal, but in many cases, there is no volume control at the pre-amp. Meaning even if you grabbed signal analog before the stock amp, the factory volume control usually does not function - which forces you to grab signal after the amp. Grabbing it digitally before the amp and retaining the OEM volume control functions is much cleaner.
      By re-coding it to think it's in a vehicle with B&O it switches the output of the factory head unit to digital. The NAV TV Zen allows us to then connect that completely unprocessed clean digital audio signal directly into the Helix DSP amp. This allows the client to retain all functions of the original radio - all sources, warning chimes, volume controls, steering wheel controls etc.
      Technically you could do an isolated audio system connected directly to a DSP amp, but then you are connecting your phone directly to the DSP as the source and cannot retain any OEM audio sources like CarPlay or the ability to use your volume controls from the radio or steering wheel. Maybe I misunderstood you. I hope that makes sense!

    I’m absolutely lusting over this build❤❤. But I need some advice. I’m in process of a budget version of this in my 4Runner. JL Audio XD1000/5, Morel TempoUltra 402 Integra in the dash, Morel TempoUltra Integra 602 in the front doors and two JL Audio 8W3s. Channel 1/2 on the dash and 3/4 on the doors.
    I tried the JL Fix86 and it’s just an expensive distortion box.

      Yes bro they make a model for Merc too and pretty sure your most audio adapter even comes with a built in DSP, MOBRIDGE also do one for yours basically the same thing they are the only two brands that offer the most optical version out way of doing it to my knowledge.

    • @chloeleedow7250
      @chloeleedow7250 8 місяців тому

      To elaborate even though I'm a vw owner we use similar tech and this will 💯 take the audio in digital optical form straight from the main stereo brain before the amp and give you remote turn on (possibly a basic dsp built in that can be tuned with pc or left alone flat signal) and leave you with a choice of 10 or 12 rca outputs or full optical until your dsp/amp dsp combo. A dsp in these is almost essential. I'll link mobridge sight cos Nav TV is getting out of the game I heard. Kind regards Jeff.
      Quick edit after checking site think there are 3 three versions for yours, coax digital, optical digital, and one with both rca and coax or optical depending on your needs. They are different levels and prices too so prepare yourself they are not cheap. I have met the guys behind this though in Melbourne Australia they are super nice and knowledgeable. Will be very helpful with any questions. The website is US based and they have parts of the company in the US I believe but the guys I met who are Mobridge basically are based in Melbourne Australia. I was so excited to meet them as I am in Australia and there is never products like this made here or designed here. Very fun experience.

      One really important factor is the client did not want to do any type of visible modification to the OEM speaker locations. Based on research I had done prior to the car arriving, I could not confirm 100% whether or not we would be able to fit the MT-450 in the factory tweeter spot without modification. I had concerns it might have been too deep. We wanted to have that OEM mid range location available if it couldn't go in the OEM tweeter location.

    • @carstereochick

      Totally disagree - have you heard them in a custom designed ported box? You can make them tight and punchy with a ridiculous amount of output. Personally John and I find the W6's to warmer/more musical in tone than W7's.
      EDIT: For what it's worth, I've had it both ways in my own vehicle. Same 12 JL W6, in a custom built, down-firing sealed enclosure and also a custom built ported. I'm digging the ported.

Also Alpines owner manual online is nothing but scribble and no one can get some real info on the unit, i meant i like the idea of it but would love some real world feedback. So I thought i would ask carstereochick who is constantly reviewing decks for us and we defiantley appreciate it!!!

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  Рік тому

      Hey Anthony - I have not used the HDS-990. Alpine had one on display at the GoFast Expo, but not installed in a vehicle. I think John and I have some PTSD when it comes to Alpine processors so we've been a bit hesitant to try them for some time.
      I remember being really excited about the PXE-H650 and the Imprint software. This was like lifetime ago, probably 2009/2010. And then I remember us being super disappointed in the automated tuning feature and having to try and recalibrate over and over again to get a decent outcome. But either way, no matter what we did there was never enough output on the sub channel for some reason.
      And then thinking it would get better with the 660 and it didn't. And then the 850 came out which looked way better but I was like why bother with only 25x8 RMS? But they did have that one in their Silverado demo truck and the imaging was perfectly dialed in so I have hope!
      Our experience with Alpine DSP's goes back quite a ways and after a few disappointments we moved on to other DSP products mainly from Audison, JL Audio and Helix. So far we have had the best outcome/experiences with the Helix product. I'm always willing to give Alpine a chance though. But I gotta tell you, it's hard to shake off those memories from the Imprint days ; )

    Sorry, I'm confused. I'm relatively new to car audio, so please feel free to correct my ignorance... I'd be grateful.
    So you have Morel Carbon Elates (which are 180wRMS) powered with 75wRMS and you say that there's still plenty of headroom... with two W6s?!!
    I haven't installed it yet as I'm waiting for summer. However, I've bought some Morel Hybrid 62s (140wRMS) and Hybrid Integra 62s (100wRMS) plus two W3s (500wRMS each) and from my research the Morels should have an amp that at least matches their stated RMS to perform properly. I've bought a Helix C Four (4x150wRMS) to power them passively until I get the courage to run them actively through my Helix Pro Mk3.
    Have I wasted a load of money?
    If you only had 75wRMS per channel then shouldn't you have gone with the MUCH cheaper Morel Virtus (120wRMS at a third the price)?
    If he turns up his music to compete with the two W6s then won't they clip and damage the Carbon Elates? Especially if it's a low quality MP3?
    PLEASE EDUCATE ME.

      I'm not sure if you missed it - we ran this actively so it was 75x8 RMS. Essentially 150 x 4 RMS. And it's all in the tuning my friend! If you have good quality equipment and set your levels right (zero clipping - digital signal) and have everything blended tastefully, it will sound amazing. We test when we tune with an oscilloscope to verify zero clipping at max volume. It helps that the signal is so clean using the digital pre-amp adapter, the signal remained digital from the factory radio straight to the Helix V Eight DSP MK II.
      In general, I always try and target RMS range, but at the same time I have to also balance a clients needs. In this case we needed to keep everything as discrete as possible so he could still fit some luggage in the trunk while also performing at the sound quality level (and output level) we know that he expects. That V Eight DSP MKII is small, but robust at 75x8 with built in DSP and was the ideal amp to get the job done.
      You have not wasted any money at all, that's all excellent quality equipment! The Hybrid 62s are what John is running in his vehicle with his V Eight MKII.
      The Carbon Elate's overall perform better, they're higher quality and more accurate compared to the Virtus or Hybrid series. More refined, warmer and better midrange over the Hybrid series. Good luck with your build. It should sound excellent when all set up and dialed in!

    That is a awsome sound system indeed, but I don't get one thing. Why didn't you used a single Helix P one for the subs ??? That has 1500W, 1800W max at 1 ohm, is 99% as good as the C one in sound quality, it's way smaller, lighter, draws less power, a little cheaper(and you used TWO C one) and you could put it in the left side of the trunk, on top of the V Eight for example. Two 2 ohm 12W6 in paralel have 1200W, so 1500W from the P one is enaugh. But someone needed to show off his big shinny new and expensive amps I guess...🙃

      Thanks for watching and thanks for the question! The P One definitely could have handled it, we have one in our car running 3 subs at 1 ohm. But from a sound quality perspective we went with the class A/B amps. Also, I wanted to keep it at a 2 ohm load because it’s more stable. I’m always thinking about longevity with builds as well. The owner of this vehicle lives hours away so the last thing I wanted was to get a phone call telling me the P one overheated after pushing it for a couple hours at 1 ohm (which has happened to us once at a car show, we were really hammering it). This particular client has been doing audio builds since the 90’s and appreciates the raw, clean power delivered by those C Ones.

      @@carstereochick thank you for your reply. It's the first time when I hear about a overheating problem with the P one, I hope it doesn't happen to me, because I want to buy one this month ! I have a brand new Helix Q15 sub(I barely managed to find one because it's discontinued) who waits for a good amp and the P one seems just right for it spec wise 🙂 Btw, do you have experience with Helix Q series subs ? If yes, how do they compare with JL W6 and W7 series ? I found the Q15 at the identical price as a 12W6 and I really hope it's better...😃Also, what type of enclosure do you reccomend for my sub ? Sealed or ported ? I listen to all music types and I like a tight and clean bass, but who can go pretty deep too(around 25hz would be perfect). Thank you !

      They are designed to do 1 ohm so you shouldn't have a problem. As I said, it was at a car show and we had been hammering all day. It's never overheated at any other time for us and it's a daily driver. But these are the things that go through my head with system design.
      I have not heard the Helix subs actually. I'm sure it's excellent quality. We've been impressed with every piece of Helix equipment we've installed. Enclosure type - that is totally a personal preference. You may want to reach out to the folks at Audiotec Fischer to get their recommendation for that specific subwoofer.
      We use Bass Box Pro for designing enclosures. It's helpful because you plot it all out and see what type of response you'll get before you build it. John made a ported enclosure for my 12W6 in my own vehicle. It has a ridiculous amount of output, and for a ported box, it's still pretty snappy. But nothing like sealed which is much tighter and punchier albeit less output/efficiency.

      @@carstereochickI also have the P1 MK2, which sometimes blasts for hours at a time with a 1 ohm load. I have never had any thermal problems. I have it installed behind the driver's seat, so I can always feel whether it is getting warm at all. This can of course happen at a trade fair for hours at a time. No power amplifier from the car hi-fi sector was ever designed for this.

      The shielded black 16 gauge you saw John solder to the speakers? We use Wirepath 16-2 NST-162-500-BLK. It's great. OFC and the shielding isn't too stiff, it's nice and flexible.

    Does anyone know WHAT BEST STEREO for a Volkswagen 2011 Touareg is the best I can get? Apparently, it's more Porsche than VW and an aftermarket radio using iMaestro Doesn't work 😭

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  Рік тому +1

      I see Metra makes a dash kit 95-9015HG and Paser their Unico Dual Plus that would retain steering wheel controls. I don't know what kind of data is flowing through that radio, but theoretically you could replace it using the kit and you'd probably have to hardwire everything else. That's one of those cases where the 1st thing we would do is unplug the radio, see what kind of connector is there and check to see if you lose any features (like warning chimes, back up sensors) or get any errors codes from the radio being disconnected.

    Sound "DAMPING", not dampening - sheesh!

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  9 місяців тому

      Sound deadening, sound dampening and sound damping are often used interchangeably in the car audio industry. To "damp down" or "dampen" means to reduce which is why people often use the phrase dampening.

    please correct me if im wrong, but did you put 2-way system in front instead of a factory 3-way? and put the tweeters into the factory midrange locations??

    • @carstereochick
      @carstereochick  11 місяців тому +2

      Yes, you are correct, good eye! The main deciding factor was balancing sound quality while maintaining the factory appearance. We focused on quality components in key locations with tons of audio control. I am not a fan of tweeters on the dash aimed up at the glass, the door location was the better spot for sound stage/less reflection. And we looked at the A pillar location as well, but the Morel tweeters were a bit too large for that location without rebuilding the pillars. By utilizing a 2-way system in the front and rear we had individual control over all 8-channels in the compact, high quality DSP amp (Helix V Eight DSP). If we wanted to do 10 or more channels we would have needed to use the V Twelve DSP which is slightly larger. It was an extremely tight fit as it was with the V Eight DSP.
