Absolutely magnificent people... Thank you for saving it. Who would have EVER guessed that the lead plane still existed. Thank you Basler for two things....keeping the DC-3 flying for the next decades and generations to come...and arranging a deal to keep this one preserved with radials. One day i hope to board this historic aircraft.
Great video of an even greater aircraft. Lots of history there. She looks amazing. You all are to be congratulated for all your hard work put into this piece of living history.
I've been lucky enough to fly in one of these grand old ladies, and there is nothing else like it. Their big wings make for a smooth flight, and gave them relatively short field take off and landing qualities. I hope she makes it to Normandy and back safely, and remind everyone who sees her of all the sacrifices made during that war. Keep in mind that nearly all the countries involved in World War II flew the D.C. 2 or 3 variants, including Japan and Russia. They were the world's airplane of that era!
My first flight was in a C-47. I got a hop from Langley AFB, Virginia, to Randolf AFB in Texas. It was a smooth flight. I stretched out and went to sleep.
Le C-47 reste toujours l' avion le plus mythique de l' histoire et c' est un plaisir de voir voler un ou deux en France! Merci pour cette magnifique vidéo... Un abonné français passionner...
God bless all who revives such a proud American legend. I'm very sure this very airplane also participated gloriously in Operation Vittles (Berlin Airlift) in 1941 and Operation Magic Carpet (1949) before fading into oblivion.
What fantastic job done C-47 Skytrain , one interesting thing I found out is that during World War 2 that C-47 didn't have safely belts for the aircrew, it could be because of flying low and in event they had to bale out of their C-47 due to damage they didn't have to wrestle with seat belts to get out quickly.
What percentage is original to the aircraft vs replaced/remade? I often look at the Memphis Belle at Wright-Patt and wonder how much of the original Memphis Belle am I looking at.
Yes by L3 Aerospace System, Waco, TX. The current paint is for publicity. They will even use mops to put the invasion stripes on. Go to abou 6:00 in the video. ua-cam.com/video/lVeXmctR8Pg/v-deo.html
I do hope they do make it look like it was on D-day. Invasion stripes need to be crudely hand painted on and the OD colors faded. I do like the way Dayton did the Memphis Belle, good example to follow.
to my mind the paint on this is butt ugly. no receiver antennae for the Eureka beacon, no dome for the SCR-717 Radar and no suppressors for exhaust flames. I am glad the bird is still around and still flying. It's a historical aircraft but the very least they could have done is paint it correctly!
It may not look exactly like it did on D-Day, but it will represent a piece of history and that's what people will remember. They are not going to remember if there is painting on it that wasn't there on D-Day, they are not going to remember if it says "Dog sat here?" Think positive...
Can someone pls explain the color scheme she is currently wearing? Are the silver parts replaced sections so you see what is original and what is new or is this just a publicity scheme?
the mettalic silver is what she looked like before her paintjob was put on the rest is a olive drab camo that was part of its final paint scheme before being pulled from service
Whilst not wishing to detract one whit from this marvelous project, nor the brave men whom it carried into battle, please allow me to correct you on one point. D Day was not 'begun' by the American paratroop drop. The first Allied troops to see action on D Day were British Glider Borne troops, who attacked and took Pegasus Bridge. I'm a proud Englishman, irked somewhat by the fact that you seem not to appreciate the many hundreds of thousands of British and Canadian soldiers who fought alongside you on D Day, as your brothers in arms. Just a little reminder.
Oh, no. You are definitely recognized. As a matter of fact, the American Pathfinders were left out too. But, the CAF is trying to fix the mistake. As a matter of fact, it's still undecided whether a RAF Dakota, or That's all Brother were leading the mass of paratroopers. British paratroopers are not forgotten.
NOW you know how many of us feel when we see videos about WWII and are given the impression that the Brits feel like they fought and won the war all by themselves, giving very little credit to the Americans and other Allies that were in there fighting and dying. Doesn't feel very good, does it?
spchalupa incorrect. From their web page; “The organization was originally known as the Confederate Air Force. Following a membership vote in 2001 and made effective on January 1, 2002, the organization is now called the Commemorative Air Force.”
A big reason why they did it was because a lot of people in the states associate "Confederate" with slavery and division so it hurt them with recognition and funding. What started out as a tongue-and-cheek joke name was starting to hinder them as they got big.
I believe they have it wrong it's not a DC-3 it's a DC-6 because Buffalo airways Buffalo Joe has majority of them that all flew on D-Day and he still runs them as cargo planes so they're incorrect it's not a DC-3 it's a DC-6 because it was the DC-6 that were running Normandy and all that so they're actually incorrect on the make and model of the plane and I would stand behind Buffalo Joe any day because he owns a total of 30 of them each one flew on D-Day and three of them were the main ones that the paratroopers jumped out of and I have conflicting feelings about this because they're claiming this one was the main lead but yet when you go to Buffalo Joe's Buffalo airway videos recently they show that the DC-6 on the anniversary that American troopers went over there and jumped out of it they say that was the lead plane So which one is it?
A marketing/publicity consultant would be my guess. Or a committee. They asked everyone for a little slogan or phrase idea, and then just went “fuck it, we’ll put em all on there. “
For all the seeker challenged commenting on this page, the plane is finished in the original scheme. ua-cam.com/video/pUU-W6ydhIE/v-deo.html I wish I could have made a jump from one of these birds.
Uhm.... no you werent- troll. No real pilot would fly 600 feet in front of another aircraft IN THE DARK , in combat conditions -even now. Not to mention the fact that your grammar suggest you are probably less than 50 years old. Also, you would need to be at least 90-plus years old now. This is just a die-hard 'rebel' who is still resentful about the name change of the Confederate Air Force. Just be honest. I may add that I didnt really see the need for them to change the name in the first place, but I digress.....
why spoil this peace of history by putting all that crap on the side..making it look nothing like the original configuration..the name alone and the publicity would have sufficed ..
And sorry to say you have ruined it by painting it in such a ridiculous way you can't have it all ways should have painted it as the d day aircraft the colours it was an AC 47 was it ? But to paint it both ways mmmmmmm
They should have left France under Belgian rule. Same language, different outlook entirely. Belgians actually have a work ethic, and abhor politicians in office more than one year. The french people never really fully appreciated the efforts made on their behalf, and actually requested the removal of their wartime saviors remains, because the reminder of their foolishness was too much. Paris now looks like the opening scenes of "Idiocracy" !!!
What a great group of people to put this much work into keeping these Old Birds flying!!!! Thank you

Goosebumps after hearing the history of this plane. Holy crap.
Fantastic to see the aviation community come together and get this airplane back in the skies, recognized, and appreciated for what it is. 👍
For the Love of Aviation.
C-47's and DC-3's are just so graceful in flight.
Beautiful aircraft! Hope she flies forever.
Great video of an even greater aircraft. Lots of history there. She looks amazing. You all are to be congratulated for all your hard work put into this piece of living history.
I had the privilege of jumping from "That's All Brother" recently.. and I've got to say, the CAF did a remarkable restoration job..

What a beauty! Thank's to all who saved her!
I was a flight engineer on the C47s usaf in the 60s grand old aircraft
A historical treasure.
Nice that they saved it!!
My first flight was in a C-47. I got a hop from Langley AFB, Virginia, to Randolf AFB in Texas. It was a smooth flight. I stretched out and went to sleep.
Glad that it was saved and restored! Now for the pathfinders that went before it to show the way!
Fantastic plane! Thanks for sharing, and greets from the Netherlands!
Wonderful Thank you CAF, Basler, and all the donors and volunteers 👍

Wonderful... a testament to Douglas Aircraft.
I hope the plane gets there. I would LOVE to watch that in UA-cam.
God bless all who revives such a proud American legend. I'm very sure this very airplane also participated gloriously in Operation Vittles (Berlin Airlift) in 1941 and Operation Magic Carpet (1949) before fading into oblivion.
Thank you Brother.
Great job guys 👏👏👏👏
This Gooney bird is the toughest plane ever made, and its built by Douglas Aircraft
I remember seeing this plane wasting away at Basler when I was going to school at Fox Valley Tech. I’m glad they didn’t touch it.
I look forward to seeing it in the UK next year along with another 30 or so DC-3s/C-47s

This plane spent a while hangared at my school in Tulsa getting some work done. When the Wild Kat isn't occupying that space, that is.
Absolutely great!
Just saw the bird yesterday in San Macros, TX. Jan 2019
i used to fly fires in dc3s and dc4s
My EAA chapter is talking about restoring a C-47. Where could we find training and documentation on how to restore this aircraft?
Check with the AirCorps Aero in Minnesota. They have a great library of blueprints on multiple Warbirds
@@Bluenose352 thank you
@@owntor1 You're welcome, Sir. And good luck with the restoration!! I look forward to seeing her at Oshkosh someday.
Probably my most prized material possession is # 76 D-Day / Tockr watch ...
I wonder if Basler holds onto all the parts they remove during conversions?
Just went and saw this plane (along with two other C-47's) in Atlanta at a WWII convention
I got the goose bumps
great to see them protect their history
PaddyPatrone our*
A bunch of C-47s were on route to Normandy for the memorial and they stopped in a town over from me and I went to see em
My uncle jumped with the 82nd on D-Day...He made it to the 19th KIA.
Amazing!
I love that aircraft *__*
Will "That's All Brother" be repainted in his original colors and markings?
I certainly hope so
@@MrFritzzz666 the current paint is an atrocity
Yes by L3 Aerospace System, Waco, TX. The current paint is for publicity. They will even use mops to put the invasion stripes on.

Thank you, she's beautiful
Is the intro horn the horn from rome: total war menu soundtrack just pitched down?
The C-47 is the 65 Mustang of the skies.
I’ve seen Thats all brother in an air show the next town over
I like old Airplanes like the Boeing b 17 or the Boeing b 29.
It flew on my birthday :)
Why does it have a P-51-like rudder fin at 0:42?
Thats a C-53
Was there any FLAK damage?
Another version of Plane Savers!
I do hope they do make it look like it was on D-day. Invasion stripes need to be crudely hand painted on and the OD colors faded. I do like the way Dayton did the Memphis Belle, good example to follow.
They did. She looks the way she did in June of '44.
Will "Thats all Brother" be taking part in the "Daks over Normandy" flight?? Be cool if she could lead that too
She is.
Long live the DC3 👍👍💯
Narrator says, "It will look exactly as it did on D day" and ends up looking nothing like it would have on D-day.
I think he was talking about those Avionics.
The current paint scheme is temporary.
to my mind the paint on this is butt ugly. no receiver antennae for the Eureka beacon, no dome for the SCR-717 Radar and no suppressors for exhaust flames. I am glad the bird is still around and still flying. It's a historical aircraft but the very least they could have done is paint it correctly!
Good!
She looks much better now. However, she DID NOT lead the D-Day invasion
Literally the first vehicle carrying the first men to d-day

Is this dc-3 N88874
Fucking beautiful, excuse my FRENCH.
Someone should make a flying RC version of this DC 3-4.
Can someone pls explain the color scheme she is currently wearing? Are the silver parts replaced sections so you see what is original and what is new or is this just a publicity scheme?
Whitpusmc it's not finished yet
the mettalic silver is what she looked like before her paintjob was put on the rest is a olive drab camo that was part of its final paint scheme before being pulled from service
TAB is now painted back to her original colors. Stripes, and all.
I went flying on this plane a week or two ago
I thought they usually leave the landing gear down on the first flight.
Yeah, I'm calling bullshit too
@@thickerhelmet2588 It is dangerous to retract the landing gear after takeoff on the first flight. You can fly with them down with ease.
Go Screaming Eagles and the 502nd
What's your connection to the 502?

The reason it was the lead plane the name “that’s all brother” meant d-day will be the turning point of WWII and stop Hitler
can you guys turn your notifications on please
its a D-C3 the C-47 is only commercial passenger versions
Dc 3 was the original civilian version. The C-47 was the same aircraft, but with modifications for the military
No GPS back then. Think of the pressure the navigator was under.
Rosie red mascot good guy
The name That's All Brother was addressed to Hitler. How appropriate for the Screaming Eagles
Cool X 1,000
Lead the main airborne force. Pathfinders went first.
And, them leading the main Airborne formation is questionable. There may have been a RAF Dakota, or two ahead of them.
